During the last two decades, the industry (including scientists) has focused on diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating because of its wide range of application in various fields. This material has numerous applications in mechanical, electrical, tribological, biomedical, and optical fields. Severe friction and wear in some machine parts consumes high amount of energy, which makes the process energy inefficient. Structural And Mechanical Properties Of Nanostructured Tio2 Thin Films Deposited By Rf Sputtering

This study mainly aims to evaluate the effects of substrate temperatures on the mechanical properties of TiO2 thin films deposited on glass substrates by radio-frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering. All titania films possess anatase structure having a nodular morphology. AES results reveal that Si and Na ions from glass diffuse into TiO2 films at higher substrate temperatures. Micro-scratch and wear tests were conducted to evaluate their mechanical and tribological properties. The adhesion critical loads of TiO2 films deposited at room temperature, 200 and 300°C are found to be 1.51, 1.54 and 1.08N, respectively. Scratch hardness also increases from 11.5 to 13.6GPa …

The tribological performance of biodiesel is crucial for its application in automobiles. In the present study, effect of temperature on the tribological performance of palm biodiesel was investigated by using four ball wear machine. Tests were conducted at temperatures 30, 45, 60 and 75 °C, under a normal load of 40 kg for 1 h at speed 1200 rpm. Tribo-surface characteristics of two aluminium metal matrix composites (Al-MMC) of compositions Al-13 vol%B4C and Al-13 vol%SiC sliding against a commercial phenolic brake pad have been investigated under dry conditions. The wear tests were carried out using a pin-on-disc type apparatus at a linear speed of 1.62 m s-1 under contact pressures ranging from 0.75 to 3.00 MPa. The coefficient of friction was recorded on line. Wear rates were calculated from mass loss measurements. The worn surface of Al-SiC metal matrix composites (MMC) sliding against phenolic brake pad at a linear sliding speed of 1.62 m s-1 under contact pressures of 0.75-3.00 MPa in a pin-on-disc apparatus was investigated. XPS was used to extract information from the top few nanometres of the worn surface, while scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (SEM-EDX) provided information from within a few micrometres. Results reveal that the surface of Al-SiC undergoes significant chemical and physical changes during wear. In this work, Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-24Al-11Nb alloys were subjected to dry sliding wear against hardened-steel counter bodies and their tribological response was investigated. The tribological behaviour of ductile iron heat-treated by two different procedures viz. quenching and tempering, and austempering to an identical matrix hardness of 445 KHN is compared. Wear tests were carried out using a pin-on-disc type apparatus under dry sliding conditions at a linear speed of 1.18 m s -1. Applied load and sliding distance in the range of 7.5-30 N and 2x10 4-6x10 4 m, respectively, were used. The effects of mechanical factors viz. applied load and temperature on the tribological performance of 5% palm oil methyl ester (POME) blended lubricant were studied using a steel-cast iron pair. Wear and frictional measurements were made using a stationary steel ball and a reciprocating cast iron plate in a modified universal wear and friction testing machine. The test conditions were contact pressure, 400 MPa; mean contact velocity, 0.34 m/s; reciprocating stroke, 80 mm; loads, 100-1100 N (fixed temperature); and temperature, 40-140°C (fixed load).
