Quantification And Subjective Perception Of Varying Reflection Densities In Measured Room Impulsed Responses, Hyun Hong, Lily M. Wang Apr 2016

Quantification And Subjective Perception Of Varying Reflection Densities In Measured Room Impulsed Responses, Hyun Hong, Lily M. Wang

Lily M Wang

This project focuses on quantifying and testing the subjective perception of reflection densities, or the number of reflections per second, from different room impulse responses. The widely used room acoustic metric, reverberation time, is linked to the perceived reverberation in a room. Two different rooms having the same reverberation time, though, can have different reflection densities in their room impulse responses, and this difference in reflection density may affect how listeners perceive spatial impression in rooms. To investigate how sensitive humans are to a change of reflection density, this paper first reviews assorted parameters for quantifying reflection density from measured …

Room Acoustic Effects On Speech Comprehension Of English-As-Second-Language Talkers And Listeners Versus Native-English-Speaking Talkers And Listeners, Lily M. Wang Apr 2016

Room Acoustic Effects On Speech Comprehension Of English-As-Second-Language Talkers And Listeners Versus Native-English-Speaking Talkers And Listeners, Lily M. Wang

Lily M Wang

Approximately 21% of the children in the United States school system speak a language other than English at home, but are being taught in English at school. English is additionally being used more and more often as a common language in international settings, even though participants at these international events again are not native English speakers. How do adverse room acoustic environments, including higher background noise levels and longer reverberation times, impact English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) talkers and listeners versus native English-speaking talkers and listeners? This presentation focuses on two recent studies at the University of Nebraska that investigate how assorted room …

Modified Numerical-Analytical Analysis On Scpps, Nima Fathi, Seyed Sobhan Aleyasin, Peter Vorobieff Mar 2016

Modified Numerical-Analytical Analysis On Scpps, Nima Fathi, Seyed Sobhan Aleyasin, Peter Vorobieff

In this study an appropriate expression to estimate the output power of solar chimney power plant systems (SCPPS) was considered. Recently several mathematical models of SCPPS were derived, studied for a variety of boundary conditions, and compared against CFD calculations. An important concern for modeling SCPPS is the accuracy of the derived pressure drop and output power equation. To elucidate the matter, axisymmetric CFD analysis was performed to model the solar chimney power plant and calculate the output power for different available solar radiation. Both analytical and numerical results were compared against the available experimental data from the historical Manzanares …

Detailed And Compact Combustion Kinetic Models For Iso-Dodecane And Gevo Alcohol-To-Jet (Atj) Alternative Fuel, Francis M. Haas, Sang Hee Won, Frederick L. Dryer Feb 2016

Detailed And Compact Combustion Kinetic Models For Iso-Dodecane And Gevo Alcohol-To-Jet (Atj) Alternative Fuel, Francis M. Haas, Sang Hee Won, Frederick L. Dryer

Francis (Mac) Haas

Over a broad range of conditions and experimental configurations, recent experimental work has shown quantitative similarities between the pre-vaporized combustion behaviors of iso-dodecane (iC12: 2,2,4,6,6-pentamethylheptane), iso-octane (iC8: 2,2,4-trimethylpentane), iso-cetane (iC16: 2,2,4,4,6,8,8-heptamethylnonane), and a 50/50 (molar) iC8/iC16 mixture. Such similarity – typically within experimental uncertainties – suggests that these fuels share a significant subset of combustion chemistry related to fuel destruction into nearly equal fluxes of iso-C4 fragments. This proposition is used to develop a compact (43 species) kinetic model to describe iC12 combustion by using detailed chemistry models for iC16 and iC8, since at present, no detailed iC12 oxidation model …

Novel Integrated Solar-Nuclear Combined Cycle Power Plant, Nima Fathi, Patrick Mckdaniel, Seyed Sobhan Aleyasin, Matthew Robinson, Peter Vorobieff, Salvador Rodriguez, Cassiano De Oliveira Feb 2016

Rather than dumping the waste heat rejected by a nuclear power plant to a wet cooling tower, a better solution may be to connect it to a solar chimney power plant system (SCPPS). This is particularly true in arid regions. The SCPPS serves the function of a dry cooling tower but also produces additional electrical power. In a solar chimney power plant, the energy of buoyant hot air is converted to electrical energy. This solar power plant includes a collector at ground level, covered with a transparent roof that collects the solar radiation, heating the air inside and the ground …

An Immersed Boundary Geometric Preprocessor For Arbitrarily Complex Terrain And Geometry, Inanc Senocak, Micah Sandusky, Rey Deleon, Derek Wade, Kyle Felzien, Marianna Budnikova Feb 2016

An Immersed Boundary Geometric Preprocessor For Arbitrarily Complex Terrain And Geometry, Inanc Senocak, Micah Sandusky, Rey Deleon, Derek Wade, Kyle Felzien, Marianna Budnikova

Inanc Senocak

There is a growing interest to apply the immersed boundary method to compute wind fields over arbitrarily complex terrain. The computer implementation of an immersed boundary module into an existing flow solver can be accomplished with minor modifications to the rest of the computer program. However, a versatile preprocessor is needed at the first place to extract the essential geometric information pertinent to the immersion of an arbitrarily complex terrain inside a 3D Cartesian mesh. Errors in the geometric information can negatively impact the correct implementation of the immersed boundary method as part of the solution algorithm. Additionally, the distance …

Nonlinear 3d Finite Element Modeling For Structural Failure Analysis Of Concrete Sleepers/Bearers At An Urban Turnout Diamond, Minh Vu, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, Mario Attard Jan 2016

Nonlinear 3d Finite Element Modeling For Structural Failure Analysis Of Concrete Sleepers/Bearers At An Urban Turnout Diamond, Minh Vu, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, Mario Attard

Sakdirat Kaewunruen

Railway urban turnout is a special track system used to divert a train from a particular direction or a particular track onto other directions or other tracks. It is a structural grillage system that consists of steel rails, points (or called “switches”), crossings, steel plates, rubber pads, insulators, fasteners, screw spikes, beam bearers (either tim- ber, polymer, steel, or concrete), ballast and formation. There are two types of turnouts, a conventional turnout and a tangential turnout. Standard conventional turnouts are designed typically for straight main line track. The combination of switch length, heel angle, and cross rate defines the turnout …

Effect Of The Distribution Of Faults And Operating Conditions On Afdd Performance Evaluations, David Yuill, James E. Braun Dec 2015

Effect Of The Distribution Of Faults And Operating Conditions On Afdd Performance Evaluations, David Yuill, James E. Braun

David Yuill

Automated fault detection and diagnosis (AFDD) tools are used to identify degradation faults that reduce
the performance and life of air-conditioning equipment. A recent methodology has been developed to
evaluate the performance of AFDD tools. The methodology involves feeding a library of input data to
an AFDD protocol and categorizing the results. The current paper describes a study that has been
conducted to assess the effect of using various input data sets in the evaluations. These input data sets
include different distributions of fault type, fault intensity, and operating temperatures. Case study
evaluations of three AFDD protocols in current widespread …
