Evaluation Techniques And Improvements Of Adhesion Strength For Tin Coating In Tool Applications: A Review Apr 2015

Evaluation Techniques And Improvements Of Adhesion Strength For Tin Coating In Tool Applications: A Review

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

The adhesion between coating-substrate systems is an important factor in determining the performance and durability of coated engineering components. This paper reviews the microstructures and adhesion strength of titanium nitride (TiN) coating produced using two different processing methods: chemical vapor deposition and physical vapor deposition. Three methods to evaluate the adhesion strength of the coatings, namely the indentation test, laser spallation technique, and scratch test are presented and discussed in terms of their working principles, their advantages and disadvantages. The extrinsic and intrinsic factors influencing the adhesion strength of coating-substrate system, particularly for TiN coating, are also elaborated. The mechanisms …

Tio2 Nanotube Coating On Stainless Steel 304 For Biomedical Applications Mar 2015

Tio2 Nanotube Coating On Stainless Steel 304 For Biomedical Applications

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

The present study describes the anodic growth of TiO2 nanotube thin layer on stainless steel 304 in ethylene glycol/water/ammonium fluoride electrolyte. In this regard, pure titanium was coated on stainless steel 304 substrates by a physical vapor deposition magnetron sputtering (PVDMS) technique. The adhesion strength of the coating to the substrate was investigated. TiO2 nanotubes were generated on the top of the Ti coated substrates by means of anodization technique at a 25 V potential and times of 20, 40, and 60 min in an ammonium fluoride electrolyte solution. The anodized Ti-coated samples were heat-treated at 280 degrees C, 430 …

Enhance Diamond Coating Adhesion By Oriented Interlayer Microcracking, Habio Guo, Xingcheng Xiao, Yue Qi, Zhi-Hui Xu, Xiaodong Li

Xiaodong Li

In this paper, we report a microcrack toughening mechanism for enhancing the adhesion of diamondcoating. The oriented microcracks were formed within the TiC interlayer to dissipate strain energy and accommodate deformation via the crack opening-closing mechanism, thus enhancing the coating/substrate interfacial toughness. The delamination of diamondcoating was effectively prevented when the parallel microcracks were confined within the interlayer and arrested at interfaces of coating/interlayer/substrate. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the highly anisotropicfracture strength of the TiC phase energetically favors crack initiation and propagation along (100) planes only, which are 54.7° away from the interface. These microcracks are constrained inside …

Thermal And Dynamic Mechanical Properties Of Grafted Kenaf Filled Poly (Vinyl Chloride)/Ethylene Vinyl Acetate Composites Jan 2015

Thermal And Dynamic Mechanical Properties Of Grafted Kenaf Filled Poly (Vinyl Chloride)/Ethylene Vinyl Acetate Composites

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

The effects of kenaf and poly (methyl methacrylate grafted kenaf on the thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of poly (vinyl chloride), PVC and ethylene vinyl acetate, EVA blends were investigated. The PVC/EVA/kenaf composites were prepared by mixing the grafted and ungrafted kenaf fiber and PVC/ EVA blend using HAAKE Rheomixer at a temperature of 150 degrees C and the rotor speed at 50 rpm for 20 min. The composites were subjected to Differential Scanning Calorimetric (DSC), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) studies. The DSC data revealed that the crystallinity …
