Matteo Rinaldi

This paper reports on the demonstration of a new class of ultra-thin (250 nm thick) Super High Frequency (SHF) AlN piezoelectric two-port resonators and filters. A thickness field excitation scheme was employed to excite a higher order contour extensional mode of vibration in an AlN nano plate (250 nm thick) above 3 GHz and synthesize a 1.96 GHz narrow-bandwidth channel-select filter. The devices of this work are able to operate over a frequency range from 1.9 to 3.5 GHz and are employed to synthesize the highest frequency MEMS filter based on electrically self-coupled AlN contour-mode resonators. Very ...

Thermocapillary Effects In Driven Dewetting And Self-Assembly Of Pulsed Laser-Irradiated Metallic Films, Mikhail Khenner Dec 2009

Thermocapillary Effects In Driven Dewetting And Self-Assembly Of Pulsed Laser-Irradiated Metallic Films, Mikhail Khenner

Mikhail Khenner

A mathematical model for the evolution of pulsed laser-irradiated, molten metallic films has been developed using the lubrication theory. The heat transfer problem that incorporates the absorbed heat from a single laser beam or the interfering laser beams is solved analytically. Using this temperature field, we derive the 3D long-wave evolution PDE for the film height. To get insights into dynamics of dewetting, we study the 2D version of the evolution equation by means of a linear stability analysis and by numerical simulations. The stabilizing and destabilizing effects of various system parameters, such as the reflectivity, the peak laser beam ...

Absolute Nitrogen Atom Density Measurements By Two-Photon Laser-Induced Fluorescence Spectroscopy In Atmospheric Pressure Dielectric Barrier Discharges Of Pure Nitrogen, Et-Touhami Es-Sebbar, Christian Sarra-Bournet, Nicolas Naudé, Françoise Massines, Nicolas Gherardi Oct 2009

Absolute Nitrogen Atom Density Measurements By Two-Photon Laser-Induced Fluorescence Spectroscopy In Atmospheric Pressure Dielectric Barrier Discharges Of Pure Nitrogen, Et-Touhami Es-Sebbar, Christian Sarra-Bournet, Nicolas Naudé, Françoise Massines, Nicolas Gherardi

Dr. Et-touhami Es-sebbar

In this paper, two-photon absorption laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy is used to follow the nitrogen atom density in flowing dielectric barrier discharges fed with pure nitrogen and operating at atmospheric pressure. Two different dielectric barrier discharge regimes are investigated: the Townsend regime, which is homogeneous although operating at atmospheric pressure, and the more common filamentary regime. In both regimes, densities as high as 3x1014 /cm3 are detected. However, the N atoms kinetic formation depends on the discharge regime. The saturation level is reached more rapidly with a filamentary discharge. For a given discharge regime, the N atom density depends strongly ...

Multiwavelength Studies For Titan's Atmospheric Composition Analysis, Y. Benilan, Et. Es-Sebbar, N. Fray, M-C. Gazeau, A. Jolly, M. Schwell, J. Guillemin

Dr. Et-touhami Es-sebbar

Titan's atmosphere mainly made of nitrogen and methane is rich in organic molecules. Hydrocarbons are formed from the photolytic dissociation of CH4 and nitriles are created by dissociation of N2 followed by reactions with hydrocarbons. In order to understand the physicochemical mechanisms responsible for the evolution of Titan's atmosphere, photochemical models are built. The latter need constrains for vertical profiles of organic compounds from the high thermosphere down to the low stratosphere as well as photodissociation rates. Those profiles over the entire atmosphere can be retrieved from Cassini observations, in particular by limb sounding, coupling infrared and ultraviolet ...

Utilization Of Virtual Globes For Open Source Industrial Symbiosis, William Doyle, Joshua M. Pearce Sep 2009

Utilization Of Virtual Globes For Open Source Industrial Symbiosis, William Doyle, Joshua M. Pearce

Joshua M. Pearce

Several proprietary industrial symbiosis software tools have been developed, however, without long term financial commitments these endeavors fall short of creating generalizable and sustainable tools. The recent development of virtual globes such as Google Earth (GE), an information service that provides imagery and three dimensional data depicting the entire physical earth, provides an opportunity to use a new sustainable method of navigating information to save energy and use materials more efficiently in the real world. To test this open source methodology, a data set was used from the Department of Environmental Protection in Pennsylvania, which has mandated reporting the location ...

Parameter Identification Of Hydro Generation System With Fluid Transients Based On Improved Genetic Algorithm, Lin Gao Aug 2009

Parameter Identification Of Hydro Generation System With Fluid Transients Based On Improved Genetic Algorithm, Lin Gao

Lin Gao

More accurate models are adopted for dynamic stability analysis of hydro generation systems but the parameters of these models are often estimated roughly. Inaccurate parameters may decrease the analysis accuracy improved by using an accurate model. An improved genetic algorithm is proposed in this paper to estimate the parameters of a hydro generation system model which contains a series of basic differential equations to represent the flow transients more accurately. The numerical and experimental results show good accordance between the actual systems and the identification results.

Piezoelectric Aluminum Nitride Nanoelectromechanical Actuators, Nipun Sinha, Graham Wabiszewski, Rashed Mahameed, Valery Felmetsger, Shawn Tanner, Robert Carpick, Gianluca Piazza

Nipun Sinha

This letter reports the implementation of ultrathin (100 nm) aluminum nitride (AlN) piezoelectric layers for the fabrication of vertically deflecting nanoactuators. The films exhibit an average piezoelectric coefficient (d31~−1.9 pC/N), which is comparable to its microscale counterpart. This allows vertical deflections as large as 40 nm from 18 µm long and 350 nm thick multilayer cantilever bimorph beams with 2 V actuation. Furthermore, in-plane stress and stress gradients have been simultaneously controlled. The films exhibit leakage currents lower than 2 nA/cm2 at 1 V, and have an average relative dielectric constant of approximately 9.2 (as ...

Pattern Formation During The Evaporation Of A Colloidal Nanoliter Drop: A Numerical And Experimental Study, Rajneesh Bhardwaj, Xiaohua Fang, Daniel Attinger Jul 2009

Pattern Formation During The Evaporation Of A Colloidal Nanoliter Drop: A Numerical And Experimental Study, Rajneesh Bhardwaj, Xiaohua Fang, Daniel Attinger

Daniel Attinger

An efficient way to precisely pattern particles on solid surfaces is to dispense and evaporate colloidal drops, as for bioassays. The dried deposits often exhibit complex structures exemplified by the coffee ring pattern, where most particles have accumulated at the periphery of the deposit. In this work, the formation of deposits during the drying of nanoliter colloidal drops on a flat substrate is investigated numerically and experimentally. A finite-element numerical model is developed that solves the Navier–Stokes, heat and mass transport equations in a Lagrangian framework. The diffusion of vapor in the atmosphere is solved numerically, providing an exact ...

Dna-Decorated Carbon Nanotubes As Sensitive Layer For Aln Contour-Mode Resonant-Mems Gravimetric Sensor, Chiara Zuniga, Matteo Rinaldi, Samuel M. Khamis, Timothy S. Jones, A T. Johnson, Gianluca Piazza

Matteo Rinaldi

In this work a nano-enabled gravimetric chemical sensor prototype based on single-stranded DNA (ss-DNA) decorated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) as nano-functionalization layer for Aluminun Nitride (AIN) contour-mode resonant-MEMS gravimetric sensors has been demonstrated. Two resonators fabricated on the same silicon chip and operating at different resonance frequencies, 287 and 450 MHz, were functionalized with this novel bio-coating layer to experimentally prove the capability of two distinct single strands of DNA bound to SWNT to enhance differently the adsorption of volatile organic compounds such as dinitroluene (DNT, simulant for explosive vapor) and dymethyl-methylphosphonate (DMMP, a simulant for nerve agent sarin). Characterization Of An N2 Flowing Microwave Post-Discharge By Oes Spectroscopy And Determination Of Absolute Ground-State Nitrogen Atom Densities By Talif, Et. Es-Sebbar, Y. Benilan, A. Jolly, M-C. Gazeau Jun 2009

Characterization Of An N2 Flowing Microwave Post-Discharge By Oes Spectroscopy And Determination Of Absolute Ground-State Nitrogen Atom Densities By Talif, Et. Es-Sebbar, Y. Benilan, A. Jolly, M-C. Gazeau

Dr. Et-touhami Es-sebbar

A flowing microwave post-discharge source sustained at 2.45 GHz in pure nitrogen has been investigated by optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence (TALIF) spectroscopy. Variations of the optical emission along the post-discharge (near, pink and late afterglow) have been studied and the gas temperature has been determined. TALIF spectroscopy has been used in the late afterglow to determine the absolute ground-state nitrogen atomic densities using krypton as a reference gas. Measurements show that the microwave flowing post-discharge is an efficient source of N (4S) atoms in late afterglow. In our experimental conditions, the maximum N (4S ...

5-10 Ghz Aln Contour-Mode Nanoelectromechanical Resonators, Matteo Rinaldi, Chiara Zuniga, Gianluca Piazza

Matteo Rinaldi

This paper reports on the design and experimental verification of Super High Frequency (SHF) laterally vibrating NanoElctroMechanical (NEMS) resonators. For the first time, AlN piezoelectric nanoresonators with multiple frequencies of operation ranging between 5 and 10 GHz have been fabricated on the same chip and attained the highest f-Q product (4.6E12 Hz) ever reported in AlN contour-mode devices. These piezoelectric NEMS resonators are the first of their class to demonstrate on-chip sensing and actuation of nanostructures without the need of cumbersome or power consuming excitation and readout systems. Effective piezoelectric activity has been demonstrated in thin AlN films having ...

Demonstration Of Inverse Acoustic Band Gap Structures In Aln And Integration With Piezoelectric Contour Mode Transducers, Nai-Kuei Kuo, Chengjie Zuo, Gianluca Piazza

Chengjie Zuo

This paper presents the first design and demonstration of a novel inverse acoustic band gap (IABG) structure in aluminum nitride (AlN) and its direct integration with piezoelectric contour-mode transducers. The experimental results indicate that the IABG structure has a stop band from 185 MHz to 240 MHz and is centered around 219 MHz with maximum rejection of 30 dB. The ABG-induced phonon scattering causes a frequency band gap that prohibits the propagation of certain acoustic wavelengths. In this work, the IABG unit cell consists of a high acoustic velocity (V) center material, which is formed by 2-μm-thick AlN sandwiched by ...

Design And Cfd Analysis Of Mass Transfer And Shear Stresses Distributions In Airlift Reactor, Rachid Bannari, Brahim Selma, Abdelfettah Bannari, Pierre Proulx

Abdelfettah Bannari Ph.D

The design, scale-up and performance evaluation of biological reactors require accurate information about the gas-liquid flow dynamics. In this study, we use CFD techniques to investigate important parameters of the multiphase flow dynamics on an initial airlift bioreactor in order to improve its design. Such parameters are distributions of shear stresses and mass transfer. Our initial proposed design of the airlift bioreactor was used for biomass growing. Specifically to produce cellulase enzyme using the fungus Trichoderma Reesei. However, the morphology of the microorganism obtained in this bioreactor was not appropriated to produce cellulase. Since the microorganism morphology presented a small ...

A New Framework For Power System Identification Based On An Improved Genetic Algorithm, Lin Gao May 2009

A New Framework For Power System Identification Based On An Improved Genetic Algorithm, Lin Gao

Lin Gao

Accuracy parameters of power system model are of great importance in stability and security evaluation or simulation. Some of the conventional methods may have inadequate adaptability or effectiveness for identification of different power systems. A general framework for power system identification is proposed based on an improved genetic algorithm with a logarithmic fitness function and an adaptive searching space. It can be used for most power system models (linear or nonlinear) and can readily be performed on different models just by rebuilt corresponding map lists between the parameters and the coefficients of the general model. The numerical experiment and practical ...

Interatomic Potentials For Hydrogen In A-Iron Based On Density Functional Theory, Ashwin Ramasubramaniam, Emily A. Carter, Mitsuhiro Itakura Apr 2009

Interatomic Potentials For Hydrogen In A-Iron Based On Density Functional Theory, Ashwin Ramasubramaniam, Emily A. Carter, Mitsuhiro Itakura

Ashwin Ramasubramaniam

We present two interatomic potentials for hydrogen in α–iron based on the embedded atom method potentials for iron developed by Mendelev et al. Philos. Mag. 83 3977 (2003) and Ackland et al. J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 16 S2629 (2004). Since these latter potentials are unique among existing iron potentials in their ability to produce the same core structure for screw dislocations as density functional theory (DFT) calculations, our interatomic potentials for hydrogen in iron also inherit this important feature. We use an extensive database of energies and atomic configurations from DFT calculations to fit the cross interaction of hydrogen ...

Demonstration Of Inverse Acoustic Band Gap Structures In Aln And Integration With Piezoelectric Contour Mode Wideband Transducers, Nai-Kuei Kuo, Chengjie Zuo, Gianluca Piazza

Chengjie Zuo

This paper presents the first design and demonstration of a novel inverse acoustic band gap (IABG) structure in aluminum nitride (AlN) and its direct integration with contour-mode wideband transducers in the Very High Frequency (VHF) range. This design implements an efficient approach to co-fabricate in-plane AlN electro-acoustic transducers with bulk acoustic waves (BAWs) IABG arrays (10x10). The IABG unit cell consists of a cylindrical high acoustic velocity (V) media, which is held by four thin tethers, surrounded by a low acoustic velocity matrix (air). The center media is formed by 2-μm-thick AlN, which is sandwiched by 200-nm-thick top and bottom ...

Integration Of Aln Micromechanical Contour-Mode Technology Filters With Three-Finger Dual Beam Aln Mems Switches, Nipun Sinha, Rashed Mahameed, Chengjie Zuo, Gianluca Piazza

Chengjie Zuo

In this paper, we present the first demonstration of the monolithic integration of Aluminum Nitride (AlN) micromechanical contour mode technology filters with dual-beam actuated MEMS AlN switches. This integration has lead to the development of the first prototype of a fully-integrated all-mechanical switchable filter. Integration has been demonstrated by using AlN contour-mode MEMS filters at two center frequencies, i.e. 98.7 and 279.9 MHz. The micromechanical switch design used here is a novel three-finger dual-beam topology that improves the isolation and insertion loss of the switch by decreasing the parasitic coupling between the DC and RF signals over ...

A Coupled Cfd-Kinetic Models For Cellulase Production In Airlift Reactor, Rachid Bannari, Abdelfettah Bannari, Brahim Selma, Pierre Proulx

Abdelfettah Bannari Ph.D

Cellulase production provides a catalyst for cellulose hydrolysis to glucose, to be used for eventual production of ethanol. The transport of reactants may influence the reaction rate remarkably, for the biological reaction, especially the enzymatic reaction, The transport behavior of the components in a biological system should be considered in the model. In this work, we propose a coupled model between hydrodynamics (twoPhaseEuler- Foam) and a kinetic model for batch and fed-batch cellulase enzyme production by T. reesei from cellulose/lactose substrate which is constructed from literature concepts and laboratory data. Good agreement is obtained between the results and experimental ...
