The Biblical Worldview And Libraries, Gregory A. Smith
The Biblical Worldview And Libraries, Gregory A. Smith
Faculty Publications and Presentations
This essay documents the process and outcomes of a structured, group-based effort used to explore the connections between the biblical worldview and librarianship. Participants in the inquiry process included the author (as moderator) and seven of his colleagues. The process entailed examining four “frames” of the biblical narrative (Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Consummation) and eliciting implications for the realm of libraries. The biblical worldview was found to provide remarkably practical theory concerning libraries, accounting for their existence across diverse cultures worldwide; plausibly explaining virtues, flaws, opportunities, and challenges; and prescribing principles through which Christians can advance God’s kingdom through library …

Revisiting Strategy In A Time Of Crisis, Gregory A. Smith
Revisiting Strategy In A Time Of Crisis, Gregory A. Smith
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The season of upheaval brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic is a critical occasion for libraries to revisit their organizational strategies. Strategy includes two complementary dimensions: alignment with the environment and the pursuit of competitive advantage. Rapid changes in the environment call for practicing strategic thinking iteratively rather than engaging in a fixed rhythm of multi-year planning. An effective library strategy displays four key attributes: (1) It responds to the concerns of diverse stakeholders. (2) It is flexible enough to adapt to emerging conditions. (3) It enacts organizational mission but can also help to reshape it. (4) It integrates with …

“Can You See My Screen?”: Utilizing Virtual Appointments For Remote Research Support, Amanda Hahn, Jeremy Mcginniss
Faculty Publications and Presentations
This poster will show how one academic library employed virtual research appointments as part of the library’s response to COVID-19. Specific data points highlight student demographics, number of appointments, time spent per meeting, how usage coincided with the semester schedule, and impact of link location on service availability. The poster also identifies best practices, adjustments made since implementation, and results of initial assessment. The objective of this poster is to show how other libraries can take a similar approach to adapting and maintaining services for a virtual environment.

- Use constraints to unleash creativity.
- Use concrete resources to stimulate thinking.
- Sequence activities to achieve desired outcomes.

Relieving Library Anxiety: The Application Of Relationship Marketing To Libraries, Cynthia Schmidt, Joshua Waltman
Relieving Library Anxiety: The Application Of Relationship Marketing To Libraries, Cynthia Schmidt, Joshua Waltman
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Library marketing has traditionally been transactionally focused. Our library has chosen to embrace a relationship marketing (RM) approach by focusing on long-term relationships rather than isolated interactions. With the prevalence of library anxiety, there is a need to look outside of library literature for best practices. While libraries and businesses define success differently, the approaches used to achieve success can be based on the same theoretical framework. RM has been documented to positively impact a business’ profits, and libraries can potentially adapt these approaches to achieve organizational goals. Our library has implemented this approach in four areas of focus: customer …
A Collective Case Study To Examine Administrators' Instructional Leadership Perspective Of The Role Of Instructional Coaches And Teacher Librarians In California Public Schools, Melanie Ann Lewis
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this collective case study was to develop an understanding of why California K-12 public school administrators distribute instructional leadership responsibilities to either instructional coaches or teacher librarians and how the two roles compare within the context of the implementation of the California Common Core State Standards in ELA/Literacy. The study addressed the following research questions: Why do administrators select instructional coaches/teacher librarians to help them provide instructional leadership? How do administrators and instructional coaches/teacher librarians work together to provide professional learning within daily instructional practice? How do administrators evaluate the effectiveness of the instructional coaches’/teacher librarians’ instructional …

An Old Tool With Enduring Value: Using Excel To Prepare Data For Analysis, Gregory A. Smith
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Microsoft Excel was first released on the Windows platform 30 years ago and has since become widely used. Although new tools for manipulating, analyzing, and visualizing data are constantly emerging, Excel remains a potent tool—and not just because of newer features. Simple functions such as TRIM, MID, SUBSTITUTE, FIND, ROUNDDOWN, and VLOOKUP can be used to manipulate data sets in powerful ways.
This workshop applies selected functions to realistic library data sets. Demonstrations include:
- deriving time-series categories from date and time stamps
- pre-coding survey comments based on keywords
- dealing with messy data points such as …

Rethinking Library Technical Services
Rethinking Library Technical Services
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The purpose of this roundtable presentation was to discuss the value or lack of value in tracking cataloging statistics; to query how other technical service departments are handling poor quality vendor records for electronic resources; and the stress of limited budgets and shrinking staff. The title of this discussion came from the book with the same title by Mary Beth Weber. The attached document contains topics of interest within that book, quotes from that book, as well as related resources.
Web Literacy For Student Fact-Checkers, Mike Caulfield
Web Literacy For Student Fact-Checkers, Mike Caulfield
Textbooks
The web gives us many such strategies and tactics and tools, which, properly used, can get students closer to the truth of a statement or image within seconds. For some reason we have decided not to teach students these specific techniques. As many people have noted, the web is both the largest propaganda machine ever created and the most amazing fact-checking tool ever invented. But if we haven't taught our students those capabilities is it any surprise that propaganda is winning?
This is an unabashedly practical guide for the student fact-checker. It supplements generic information literacy with the specific web-based …
Managing With Purpose: Integrating Assessment, Planning, And Budgeting, Gregory A. Smith
Managing With Purpose: Integrating Assessment, Planning, And Budgeting, Gregory A. Smith
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Assessment, planning, and budgeting are interrelated disciplines that play an important role in accomplishing a library's mission. This conference session introduces tools and concepts that will equip attendees to manage library services strategically in response to evolving customer needs and environmental conditions. Four tools—the logic model, six dimensions of assessment, the balanced scorecard, and the business model canvas—will enable managers to evaluate, plan, and communicate progress in the pursuit of mission and vision. Additionally, two concepts—opportunity cost and the principal-agent problem—will provide context for planning and budgeting decisions.

Emptying The Dump Truck: A Library's Experience With A Large Donation, Robert Weaver
Faculty Publications and Presentations
In 2013 Dr. Homer Blass, a professor of history, retired from teaching at Liberty University. He died later that year. In early 21014 not long after the opening of the new Jerry Falwell Library, Dr. Blass’ family contacted the university about donating his legendary book collection to the library. Several of the librarians knew Dr. Blass as a voracious reader and borrower of books, so we were interested at once. After some negotiation, the university agreed that the JFL would acquire the Blass Collection and this agreement included transporting the collection to the campus.

Library Orientation Can Be Murder!: An Interactive Training Experience, Kathryn A. Cox
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Each Fall Semester, before classes begin, the library holds an orientation and training for all library faculty, staff, and student workers. This is typically a time when the captive audience (attendance is mandatory) is treated to a day of lectures and presentations on such riveting topics as library policies and procedures, customer service standards, and emergency preparedness, followed by tours of the different working areas of the library. No one is spared; even long-time, returning employees must attend to be reminded of things they should very well know and to show solidarity and support for the new employees. It is …
