This report presents findings from the fall, 2007, baseline survey of entering freshmen. The sample was of all entering freshmen, with or without college credit from high school, a total of 2392 students. There were 1484 online responses, and 302 phone responses, a total of 1786 (a 75% response rate). Survey topics included Summerstart, logistic confidence, motivation and expectations, academic and social engagement and challenges while in high school, a current assessment of academic skills and competencies, academic priorities and study strategies, and issues related to health, wellness and alcohol use.

2) While the FIGs are taught by faculty and qualified staff, the FYE seminars are taught only be full-time faculty.

3) FYE seminars are offered in the fall, winter, and spring quarters, whereas the FIGs are available only in the fall of each year.

4) The FYE program does not have a mission statement that brings together a unified purpose for all the FYE seminars. Rather, each seminar is more closely aligned with disciplinary and / or departmental goals.

In the fall, 2006, the Freshman Interest Group (FIGs) Program entered its eighth iteration. To use assessment terminology, the program has passed through its beginning and emergent stages and has entered maturity. Its mission has been crafted, student learning outcomes (SLO's) have been identified, and its identity has solidified. Yet while maturity has wrought a degree of self-confidence, it has not brought complacency. The program remains one of the most assessed academic programs on campus. Yearly, FIGs, administrators and instructors pore over results of surveys and quantitative data, searching for ways to improve both the program and its assessment. Findings …

INTRODUCTION The Western Educational Longitudinal Study (WELS) was conceived as a process to obtain data more relevant to Western and its mission than survey data had been able to obtain previously. Rather than continuing to rely on outside survey forms, researchers developed a Western-specific survey form. Development of this survey took about three years, with researchers soliciting input from dozens of individuals, departments and offices. Along the way, WELS researchers also noted where data was already being collected so that doubling up on survey questions was minimized. Each time a student attempts to register for any Western course. a computer record is created, including the student ID, the course sought, and the outcome of the attempt. Using those records, we can generate estimates of the demand for each course at Western. This report presents findings for fall quarter, 2001. We plan parallel reports for winter and spring quarters-hopefully early enough to be used by departments considering course offerings for 2002-2003. INTRODUCTION In fall of 1998, Western enrolled 2199 new freshmen; in the fall of 1999, 1725 of them returned, for a 78.4% retention rate. This study examine what influences freshman retention and also grade point average, the key indicator of academic adjustment and by far the most powerful predictor of retention. The orientation of this analysis, like all those performed by the Office of Institutional Research and Resource Planning, is toward policy.
