Coral reefs, critical to marine biodiversity and coastal protection, face escalating threats from climate change-related phenomena such as ocean warming. The elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) is a well-studied structural protein that is easily amenable to amino acid (AA) sequence modifications and has the potential to yield a wide variety of uses in bioengineering and biomedical applications. One unique property of ELP is the inclusion of intrinsically disordered domains (IDP) within the structure that allow for its diversity of physical properties. tRNA genes are highly transcribed and perform one of the most fundamental cellular functions. Although a universal pattern observed across all three domains of life is that highly transcribed genes tend to evolve slowly, tRNA genes have been shown previously to evolve rapidly. This rapid sequence evolution could result from relaxed selection, increased mutation rate, or a combination of both. Here, we use mutation-accumulation line sequencing data to show that tRNA genes accumulate more mutations than other gene types. Background: Breast cancer is the most common type of invasive cancer in women in their forties and fifties. Recent evidence suggests that JAK2/STAT3 signaling is constitutively active in breast cancer. Previous studies suggest that plant extracts, including Salvia Officinalis, have strong cytotoxic effects on breast cancer cells. The differential expression of miRNAs is also strongly linked to cancer development.

Dementia, being the most common syndrome resulting from neurodegeneration, severely affects memory and cognitive functions. Alcohol use disorder is known to have significant genetic components that contribute to an individual’s susceptibility to the disease. Mouse models are commonly used to study the mechanisms underlying alcohol use disorder, with C57BL/6J (B6) and DBA/2J (D2) being two of the more prominently used inbred strains. Research in the Miles Laboratory has used these two strains, and genetic panels of mice derived from them, to identify potential genes associated with variance in ethanol-related behaviors using quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis. Many insects are known to harbour intracellular and heritable bacteria (endosymbionts), which provide their hosts with adaptive traits. Whole insect gDNA shotgun sequencing projects often sequence the genome of endosymbiont, in addition to the insect’s genome. There are approximately 600 whole genome shotgun libraries from insects available on the public repository (NCBI), which can be mined to obtain endosymbiont genomes. Major depression is considered a complex trait influenced by both polygenic risk factors and environmental exposures, such as childhood trauma. This study applied statistical genetic methods to calculate aggregate genetic risk for major depression to predict depressive symptoms scores in a college student sample. Data were from the Spit for Science (S4S) study in which college students from a large urban university self-reported interpersonal trauma (IPT) exposure prior to college and depressive symptoms from the past month (N = 7502; ancestry group: 20% African [AFR], 12% Admixed Americas [AMR], 10% East Asian [EAS], 49% European [EUR], 8% South Asian [SAS]). …

Integrating crop and livestock is being considered to improve soil health by carbon sequestration. A two-year study (2019-2021) at CPBES in Newton, MS was aimed to evaluate soil microbial diversity in the warm, humid regions, specifically southeastern USA. Amplicons targeting bacterial 16S rRNA genes and fungal ITS2 regions were sequenced. Taxonomic assignment and microbial diversity characterization were performed using QIIME2®. Soil fungal diversity showed significant differences (alpha diversity, p = 0.031 in yr. 2020 and beta diversity, p = 0.037 in yr. 2021). Niemann-Pick Type C (NPC) is a recessive neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disorder that is caused by autosomal recessive mutations. The mutations result in the inactivation of NPC1 and NPC2 proteins. Inactivation of the NPC1 protein results in the accumulation of cholesterol within the endosomal and lysosomal compartments of cells including Cerebellar Purkinje cells. Mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent cells residing in multiple tissues with the capacity for self-renewal and differentiation into various cell types. Due to the myriad sources of MSCs the International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT) proposed certain criteria for their characterization. Here, we isolate adult MSCs from mouse testes and demonstrate that these testis-derived MSCs (tMSCs) follow some of the ISCT’s criteria. tMSCs expressed the MSCs surface markers CD44, CD73, and CD29 and lacked the expression of the hematopoietic cell marker CD45. The human microbiome is a main contributor for the health and welfare of the human body. It is affected by many factors like diet and hygiene. These factors differ between different populations. Testing the population-microbiome differences using healthy samples from different countries is the first objective of this study. This data was then used in training and testing machine learning models (Random Forest and L2-logistic Regression Classifiers) for the prediction of the geographical location based on the microbiome data. HCMV infection is common among adults worldwide, with an estimated seroprevalence of 66 to 95%, depending on the geographic region (Zuhair et al., 2019). In this study I attempted to further resolve the population genetic structure in the Prothonotary Warbler (Protonotaria citrea), and conducted an outlier SNP analysis and exploratory gene ontology analysis to investigate potential ongoing natural selection in the species. This analysis of population structure confirms previous work by DeSaix et al. (2019), where weak population structure was observed between eastern sites along the Atlantic Coastal Plain, and western sites in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley, possibly due to a genetic discontinuity across the Appalachian Mountains. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a late-onset fatal neurodegenerative disease that causes loss of upper and/or lower motor neurons, and currently has no treatment or cure available. Over 90% of cases occur spontaneously with unknown causes, highlighting the complexity of the disease, and only 10% of cases are linked to heritable genetic mutations. Strains MS455 and MS389, endophytic bacteria, were isolated from healthy soybean plant growing adjacent to a patch of plants affected by charcoal rot disease, caused by the fungal pathogen Macrophomina phaseolina. The complete genomes of both strains were sequenced and identified as Burkholderia species Strain MS455 exhibits broad-spectrum antifungal activities against economically important pathogens, including Aspergillus flavus. Random and site-specific mutations were employed in discovery of the genes that share high homology to the ocf gene cluster of Burkholderia contaminans strain MS14, which is responsible for production of the antifungal compound occidiofungin. Hypersaline environments are extreme habitats that can be exploited as biotechnological resources. Here, we characterized a nitrilase (NitraS-ATII) isolated from Atlantis II Deep brine pool. It showed higher thermal stability and heavy metal tolerance compared to a closely related nitrilase.

We also studied integrons in halophiles and hypersaline environments. Integrons are genetic platforms in which an integron integrase (IntI) mediates the excision and integration of gene cassettes at specific recombination sites. IntroductionOpioid use disorder has continued to rise in prevalence across the United States, with an estimated 2.5 million Americans ailing from the condition (NIDA, 2020). Medically managed detoxification incurs substantial costs and, when used independently, may not be effective in preventing relapse (Kosten & Baxter, 2019). While numerous studies have focused on predicting the factors of developing opioid use disorder, few have identified predictors of readmission to medically managed withdrawal at an inpatient level of care. We contribute in saving the lives of cancer patients through early detection and diagnosis, since one of the major challenges in cancer treatment is that patients are diagnosed at very late stages when appropriate medical interventions become less effective and full curative treatment is no longer achievable. Cancer classification using gene expressions is extremely challenging given the complexity and high dimensionality of the data.
