On The Thresholding Strategy For Infrequent Labels In Multi-Label Classification, Yu Jen Lin, Chih Jen Lin
On The Thresholding Strategy For Infrequent Labels In Multi-Label Classification, Yu Jen Lin, Chih Jen Lin
Machine Learning Faculty Publications
In multi-label classification, the imbalance between labels is often a concern. For a label that seldom occurs, the default threshold used to generate binarized predictions of that label is usually sub-optimal. However, directly tuning the threshold to optimize F-measure has been observed to overfit easily. In this work, we explain why this overfitting occurs. Then, we analyze the FBR heuristic, a previous technique proposed to address the overfitting issue. We explain its success but also point out some problems unobserved before. Then, we first propose a variant of the FBR heuristic that not only fixes the problems but is also …
Organizational Information Systems (Is) Strategy, It Governance, And Firm Performance: Two Essays On How It Firms Utilize The Roles Of Is Strategy And It Governance To Improve Firm Performance, Xiaqing He
Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations
This dissertation includes two essays. For essay one, we investigate the implications of organizational wireless and mobile strategy on firm performance in the context of publicly traded information technology firms in the United States. A research model is developed to examine the roles of information technology investment and chief information officer compensation in moderating the relationship between wireless and mobile strategy and firm performance. Topic modeling techniques and ordinary least squares regression are employed to analyze the data. The results support the positive effects of wireless and mobile strategy on firm performance. Additionally, chief information officer compensation is found to …

Given the presence of handwritten documents in human transactions, including email sorting, bank checks, and automating procedures, handwritten characters recognition (HCR) of documents has been invaluable to society. Handwritten Chinese characters (HCC) can be divided into offline and online categories. Online HCC recognition (HCCR) involves the trajectory movement of the pen tip for expressing linguistic content. In contrast, offline HCCR involves analyzing and categorizing the sample binary or grayscale images of characters. As recognition technology develops, academics' interest in Chinese character recognition has continuously increased, as it significantly affects social and economic development. Recent development in this area is promising. …

Constructing Identity Through Code Choice And Code-Switching: Evidence From Multilingual Muslim Women In Barcelona, Farah Ali
Global Language Studies Faculty publications
With the presence of Catalan, Spanish, and a variety of migrant languages, multilingualism in Catalonia extends across the region and is a regular practice for native-born and migrant residents alike. This study examines language use and its relationship to identity construction among first and second-generation Muslim women immigrants in Barcelona. Data was collected from 34 female informants in Barcelona, all of whom identified as first or second-generation Muslim. Data consisted of questionnaires and interviews which were designed to learn about the informants’ linguistic background as well as the extent to which they used Spanish, Catalan and their native/heritage language(s). As …
The Worlding Of Arabic Literature: Language, Affect, And The Ethics Of Translatability, Anna Ziajka Stanton
The Worlding Of Arabic Literature: Language, Affect, And The Ethics Of Translatability, Anna Ziajka Stanton
Literary Studies
Critics have long viewed translating Arabic literature into English as an ethically fraught process of mediating between two wholly incommensurable languages, cultures, and literary traditions. Today, Arabic literature is no longer “embargoed” from Anglophone cultural spaces, as Edward Said once famously claimed that it was. As Arabic literary works are translated into English in ever-greater numbers, what alternative model of translation ethics can account for this literature’s newfound readability in the hegemonic language of the world literary system?
The Worlding of Arabic Literature argues that an ethical translation of a work of Arabic literature is one that transmits the literariness …
Transnational Technical Communication: English As A Business Lingua Franca In Engineering Workplaces, Amy Hodges, Leslie Seawright
Transnational Technical Communication: English As A Business Lingua Franca In Engineering Workplaces, Amy Hodges, Leslie Seawright
SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications
Recent scholarship argues for increased attention to students' linguistic diversity and intercultural communication competence. Our study examined the experiences of 10 working engineers who had graduated from an English-medium international branch campus in the Arabian Gulf. An analysis of their interviews reveals the complex role of English as a business lingua franca (BELF) in workplace communication. Interviewees' reflections about their university experience indicate that they had not previously understood the full rhetorical and communicative nature of BELF. We provide implications for instructors who wish to provide methods that center intercultural professional communication and decenter English as a standardized, static language.

"Mmmuuuchísimos años atrás" (mmmaaany years ago). That is what a Colombian speaker would say when describing an event that occurred a long time ago. In doing so, they simulate throwing an imaginary object (like a paper plane), pushing their hands far away from the body. At the same time, they will extend the duration of the words and rise and drop intonation and speaking rate, simulating the sound of throwing that object. This combination of multiple "modalities" of expression (speech sounds and gestures) that resemble the concepts they are conveying is called Multimodal Iconic Expressions (MMIEs). These MMIEs tend to …

Aging And Learning: Community Engagement And Self-Efficacy In L2 Teaching To Elderly Students, Leticia Rinaldi
Shared Knowledge Conference
The elderly population (60 years or older) has been increasing in numbers during the past decades around the world and is expected to reach the number of two billion by 2050 (Scult, Haime, et al 2015; Santos, 2019). In Brazil, the aging population numbers are rising more rapidly compared to the global tendency (Alves, 2020). However, the misconception that elderly people are uncapable or incompetent is still part of the imaginary constructed around the aging population (Minichiello and Coulson, 2005). These perceptions shape the access of older population to resources that are accessible to younger sections of society, causing a …

Parental Involvement And Satisfaction: A Comparative Study Of High-School Charter Schools And Traditional Public Schools, Nicholas Thompson-Davis
Parental Involvement And Satisfaction: A Comparative Study Of High-School Charter Schools And Traditional Public Schools, Nicholas Thompson-Davis
Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine parents’ levels of satisfaction with school choice by comparing charter and traditional public schools at the secondary level. The main assumption of the study is that parental satisfaction with school choice is related to parental involvement with children’s education and their views of school-home communication. The study is guided by Bourdieu’s theory of capital to interpret parental involvement efforts and their assessment of school-home communication as ways to acquire social capital for themselves and their children. Epstein’s framework of parental involvement allows for operationalizing the concept with respect to school and out-of-school …
Ibn Al-Jawzī’S Critique Of Sufism In Talbīs Iblīs: A Re-Examination, Pascal Held
Ibn Al-Jawzī’S Critique Of Sufism In Talbīs Iblīs: A Re-Examination, Pascal Held
Faculty Journal Articles
This study seeks to re-examine Ibn al-Jawzī’s (d. 597/1201) censure of Sufism in his Talbīs Iblīs, a widely-known and frequently cited, but rarely carefully considered work. The article finds that Talbīs Iblīs’ chapter devoted to Sufism does indeed constitute a scathing condemnation of the Sufi tradition, which is however by no means comprehensive and requires moreover certain specifications and clarifications. For example, is Ibn al-Jawzī’s criticism mostly limited to Sufi conduct and practice, especially in public, rather than their ideas and beliefs, and likewise does he use his criticism to highlight commendable forms of piety and mysticism, revealing that he …

An electrical device that transforms the electricity into the waves of radio and vice versa is termed the antenna. Its main deployment is in the transmitter and receiver of the antenna. While transmission, the transmitter of radio at the extremities of the antenna furnishes the electricity which oscillates at the frequency of radio wave and energy is released as current as em waves. Some of the voltage is formed from the em wave that is invaded at the point of receiving to amplify the receiver. This study focuses on the analysis of the satellite system to aid in mobile antenna …

Performance Study On Extractive Text Summarization Using Bert Models, Shehab Abdel-Salam, Ahmed Rafea
Faculty Journal Articles
The task of summarization can be categorized into two methods, extractive and abstractive. Extractive summarization selects the salient sentences from the original document to form a summary while abstractive summarization interprets the original document and generates the summary in its own words. The task of generating a summary, whether extractive or abstractive, has been studied with different approaches in the literature, including statistical-, graph-, and deep learning-based approaches. Deep learning has achieved promising performances in comparison to the classical approaches, and with the advancement of different neural architectures such as the attention network (commonly known as the transformer), there are …
