Ambassador Of Cajun Music: Jimmy C. Newman, 1927-2014, Michael Green Jan 2020

Ambassador Of Cajun Music: Jimmy C. Newman, 1927-2014, Michael Green

History Faculty Research

In February 1765, the first boat with French-speaking refugees from Acadia in Nova Scotia arrived in the present-day state of Louisiana, where their description of themselves as Acadians changed, just as regional dialects change, into Cajuns. Their departure was part of what one historian of Cajun culture calls an “ethnic cleansing.” The British had acquired French Canada two years before and deported the Catholic Acadians to other colonies; a group of them chose instead to head for what they thought was French territory. It turned out that the Treaty of Paris of 1763, which had conveyed French Canada from France …

Background: Music is a popular pastime and an essential part of our lives that has the power to change one's state of mind. The melody, lyrics, and rhythm combine together to create creative symphonies that can either fill one with energy, enthusiasm, and positivity, or take one to melancholic mood. Music is known for its positive influence and therapeutic qualities but at times it can be distracting as well especially when your other faculties are engaged in doing other work. Driving is one such activity where music, though a joy to listen to, can prove disastrous through distractions. Materials and …

Haiti's Political Notes, Tadia Toussaint

Capstones

Musicians have a huge impact on politics in Haiti, the country where artists enter contracts to create soundtracks campaigning for political candidates of their choice. We meet some of the nation's leading musicians Shabba and Belo who talk about the impact their artistry has on the political process, how they influence people and highlight issues.

J.S. Bach, Suite For Violoncello Solo, Performed On Mandola, Lee Bidgood Dec 2015

J.S. Bach, Suite For Violoncello Solo, Performed On Mandola, Lee Bidgood

Lee Bidgood

My arrangement of this iconic piece for mandola, an interpretation project that emerged from my work leading a mandolin orchestra at ETSU. This particular recording was facilitated by the discovery of an instrument donated to our department, a 1920s Gibson mandola. This fabulous instrument gave me the voice with which I could articulate the way I heard this piece, one that I have turned over in my head and hands since I was in high school.

Two Sound Pieces, Keith Dorwick Apr 2013

Two Sound Pieces, Keith Dorwick

Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion

These two sound works gathered here ("At the Edge of Sleep" and "For Voices, No Longer Human") were assembled out of ordinary, even mundane sounds. In each, I slowed down the tempo of the original sound cues such as a cat eating kibbles or a voice uttering nonsense. Further manipulation of the sounds to make entirely new pieces created abstract sound landscapes, if you will, that take on (I hope) a mythic quality far removed from their original sources. In the case of "For Voices, No Longer Human," Harlot's review process resulted in a whole new (and much stronger) work, …

The Electrate Blues, Pearce Durst

Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion

The following piece articulates a connection between blues music and electronic literacy. I visualize this connection by harmonizing the three dominant chords of the blues (one-four-five) with the three dominant modes of electronic literacy (audio-text-images). The content on each page contextualizes this relationship between music and electronic literacy both historically and personally. The inspiration for this work derives from connections I began to note while simultaneously learning how to play guitar and teach a class on multimedia authoring.

Short Historical Overview And Comparison Of The Pitch Width And Speed Rates Of The Vibrato Used In Sonatas And Partitas For Solo Violin By Johann Sebastian Bach As Found In Recordings Of Famous Violinists Of The Twentieth And The Twenty-First Centuries, Tomislav Dimov

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

This doctoral research project explores the use of violin vibrato present in recordings of the Six Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, BWV 1001-1006 by Johann Sebastian Bach, made by forty prominent violinists during the last 100 years. It reports strictly on two of the most objectively measurable and characteristic parameters of the vibrato---its width and rate.;Forming an essential part of the violinist's central repertory for more than a century, Bach's cycle has received the highest levels of scholarly and artistic attention and the matter of vibrato has certainly been examined. However, to date there has been no systematic study …

The Evolving Perception Of Charles Ives And His Music, Hsiang-Chi Liao May 2006

The Evolving Perception Of Charles Ives And His Music, Hsiang-Chi Liao

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

When Charles Ives's music began to appear in performances and publications in the 1920s, his admirers often regarded him as an American experimentalist who had created radically new kinds of music that was independent from the European musical tradition. This outlook characterized much of what was written on Ives before the 1980s. At that time, a different picture of Ives gradually began to emerge. It argues that in fact, Ives's music owes as much to the European classical tradition as to American vernacular traditions. Scholars began to reconsider Ives's place in music history and stress his debt to the European …
