Dataset For Reporting Quality In Math Meta-Analyses For Students With Or At Risk Of Disabilities, Gena Nelson, Soyoung Park, Tasia Brafford, Nicole Heller, Angela Crawford Jul 2021

Dataset For Reporting Quality In Math Meta-Analyses For Students With Or At Risk Of Disabilities, Gena Nelson, Soyoung Park, Tasia Brafford, Nicole Heller, Angela Crawford

Early and Special Education Datasets

The purpose of the systematic review was to evaluate reporting quality in meta-analyses focused on mathematics interventions for students with or at risk of disabilities. To identify meta-analyses for inclusion, we considered peer-reviewed literature published between 2000 and 2020; we searched five education-focused electronic databases, scanned the table of contents of six special education journals, reviewed the curriculum vitae of researchers who frequently publish meta-analyses in mathematics and special education, and scanned the reference lists of meta-analyses that met inclusion criteria. To be included in this systematic review, meta-analyses must have reported on the effectiveness of mathematics-focused interventions, provided a …

Naturally-Scientific And Philosophical Views Abu Ali Ibn Sino, Gularam Masharipova Nov 2019

Naturally-Scientific And Philosophical Views Abu Ali Ibn Sino, Gularam Masharipova

The Light of Islam

The article analyzes the natural-science and philosophical views of Abu Ali Ibn Sino, and also studies the social relations of that period. The scientific heritage of Ibn Sina, representing a rich philosophical system (Kitab ash-shifa, Kitab an-najot, Donishnom) was investigated from the point of view of philosophical knowledge: physics, mathematics, logic and metaphysics. The scientific heritage of Abu Ali Ibn Sina is conventionally divided into 4 groups, that is, natural, philosophical views, literature and medicine. Much attention is paid to philosophy and medicine. In the West, the medical heritage of Avicenna is known from the work of the Canon of …

Teaching The Strand Of Ccss Slope Through Metacognition In Middle School, High School, And Advanced Placement Mathematics, Sara Snarr Sep 2017

Teaching The Strand Of Ccss Slope Through Metacognition In Middle School, High School, And Advanced Placement Mathematics, Sara Snarr

Sara Snarr

The strand of slope presents every year from 7th grade through Advanced Placement Calculus. The Common Core Learning Standards require and encourage a thorough understanding of slope and slope-related concepts such as unit rate, parallel and perpendicular lines, and the derivative. Unfortunately, many secondary mathematics teachers struggle to teach students to monitor their process and conceptualize an overall strategy for solving complex and fundamental problems. This thesis examines the role of metacognition-focused instruction on achievement, and offers research-supported teaching methods in the context of slope and unit rate that support metacognition. These methods are then presented in a series of …

Creating Art Patterns With Math And Code, Boyan Kostadinov Aug 2016

Creating Art Patterns With Math And Code, Boyan Kostadinov

Publications and Research

The goal of this talk is to showcase some visualization projects that we developed for a 3-day Code in R summer program, designed to inspire the creative side of our STEM students by engaging them with computational projects that we developed with the purpose of mixing calculus level math and code to create complex geometric patterns. One of the goals of this program was to attract more minority and female students into applied math and computer science majors.

The projects are designed to be implemented using the high-level, open-source and free computational environment R, a popular software in industry for …

Spring Simulator, Casey Chu May 2013

Spring Simulator, Casey Chu

Interface Compendium of Student Work

For a Differential Equations project, I created a simulation of a mass
on a spring system. Mass-spring systems with damping (friction) are
often difficult to visualize. I seek to make these results more
intuitive by letting a student interested in math or physics tweak the
constants and play with the spring that way. The user can physically
drag the block with their mouse, or they can fine tune the mass,
damping coefficient, and spring constant. They can also play with the
forcing function, which can be either constant or sinusoidal. In the
latter case, the user can also play with …

Feedback Control Of Wave Propagation Patterns In Excitable Media, Florin Chirila May 2003

Feedback Control Of Wave Propagation Patterns In Excitable Media, Florin Chirila

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Numerical and theoretical studies of the excitability boundaries for spiral waves in 2D and scroll waves in 3D are presented. The boundaries are defined by unstable wave segments, which are stabilized by using a negative feedback control algorithm. A kinematic description of the constant-size, constant-shape wave segments is presented for 2D waves. Intricate patterns of wave propagation are exhibited in a chemical reaction-diffusion system with spatiotemporal feedback. Wave behavior is controlled by feedback-regulated excitability gradients that guide propagation in specified directions. Waves reflecting or refracting are observed when interacting with a discontinuity in excitability. Wave trajectories in fixed excitability gradients …

Uncertainty Assessment For Cfd Using Error Transport Equation, Gusheng Hu Aug 2002

Uncertainty Assessment For Cfd Using Error Transport Equation, Gusheng Hu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

While Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is making extensive use of the power of computational technology, it is also facing a serious problem arising from the so-called numerical uncertainty. The overall uncertainty (or the global error) involved in CFD results can be due to different sources mainly contributed by (i) discretization error (or solution error due to incomplete grid convergence), (ii) iteration convergence error, (iii) grid generation errors (skewness, grid aspect and expansion ratio, coordinate transformation etc.), and (iv) round-off errors. In this study an in-depth discussion concerning these issues is presented with an emphasis on the discretization error in regard …

Integrating Science, Mathematics And Technology In Middle School Technology-Rich Environments: A Study Of Implementation And Change, Robert K. James, Charles E. Lamb, Dan L. Householder, Melynda A. Bailey Jan 2000

Integrating Science, Mathematics And Technology In Middle School Technology-Rich Environments: A Study Of Implementation And Change, Robert K. James, Charles E. Lamb, Dan L. Householder, Melynda A. Bailey

Engineering Education Faculty Publications

The GTECH project, funded through a grant from the GTE Foundation, prepared school teams of science, mathematics and technology teachers and an administrator to set goals for their local schools regarding implementation of electronic technology and integration of content across curricular areas. A variety of teacher-centered staff development strategies were used to enable participants to achieve local school objectives, model and encourage active learning environments involving technology, develop integrated curriculum and provide training to their peers. GTECH staff provided workshops and summer institutes based on teacher feedback and classroom observations. Data from the Stages of Concerns Questionnaire assisted the staff …

Outline And Nearly Outline Triple Systems Of Even Index, Michael Neill Ferencak Dec 1998

Outline And Nearly Outline Triple Systems Of Even Index, Michael Neill Ferencak

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The main result of this work describes a completely novel structural result for (v, 3, lambda)-designs in the case when lambda is even. Such designs are known as triple systems. Given a finite collection of n elements, a triple system of order n and index lambda is a collection of subsets of size three chosen from the given set with the property that each distinct pair of elements from the set occurs in exactly lambda of the triples. It is well known for what values of n and lambda such systems exist. A partial triple system of order n and …
