Whose Birthright? Evaluating The Impact Of Birthright Trips To Israel On American Jewish Identity In The #Metoo And #Boycottbirthright Era, Christy David Dec 2019

Whose Birthright? Evaluating The Impact Of Birthright Trips To Israel On American Jewish Identity In The #Metoo And #Boycottbirthright Era, Christy David

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis critically examines both the impact of Birthright Israel trips on the formation of Jewish American identity but also confronts disparities in the participants’ experiences and the current evaluation methods being used to judge the ‘success’ of the trips. In 2018, the rise of the #MeToo and #BoycottBirthright movements coincided, and both participants of the trip and female educators called for a change in both the Birthright itinerary and supposed “goals” that were seeped in misogyny and an erasure of the Palestinian narrative. This research brings the two seemingly separate issues together by looking at the issues with the …

Predicting Juvenile Delinquency In Texas Public Schools: Response To A Texas Legislator's Challenge, Wendy Brower

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to engage in a systematic inquiry of juvenile delinquency in Texas public schools and respond to the statement made by a member of the Texas Legislature who challenged public school officials to predict delinquency in order to keep students out of the court system. The study is based on the assumption that a profile for juvenile delinquency can be developed using the existing data submitted by Texas public school districts through the Public Education Information. This is a quantitative study that first explored teh profile for deliqnuent and non-deliquent at-risk students. next, the study …

Sense Of Belonging And The Lived Experiences Of Students Of Color In A Racially Diverse Honors Program, Rebekah Joanna Chojnacki Dec 2019

Sense Of Belonging And The Lived Experiences Of Students Of Color In A Racially Diverse Honors Program, Rebekah Joanna Chojnacki

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

This qualitative study fills a gap in the research the lived experiences of Students of Color in racially diverse honors programs by illuminating the experiences of 12 Students of Color enrolled in a racially diverse honors program. Enrollment in an honors program has been demonstrated to be beneficial to promoting a sense of belonging for college students. However, prior to this study, little research has been done on the experiences of Students of Color in an honors program that is racially diverse. Using sense of belonging for college students (Strayhorn, 2019) as a theoretical framework allowed for several themes to …

African American Women's Resistance In The Aftermath Of Lynching, Lacey A. Brown-Bernal Dec 2019

African American Women's Resistance In The Aftermath Of Lynching, Lacey A. Brown-Bernal

History Theses

This thesis focuses on resistance strategies used by African American women in the aftermath of lynching in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It examines the ways in which those strategies were shared, modified, and deployed by black women activists throughout the Jim Crow Era and traces the connection to contemporary movements for social justice. The starting point for this study of generational change within African American women’s resistance to violence is the transatlantic anti-lynching campaign of Ida B. Wells and an examination of newspaper articles that detailed her actions while abroad with an eye to considering how her …

B.A./B.S. Practicum Group Exhibit (ART 499)

I create graphic design pieces with the goal of inciting a feeling in the viewers. I have found through the years that creating a well developed color pallet is a major part of my process as an artist. This is because color can help enhance the specific emotion or idea that I am pushing for. I enjoy designing a variety of posters over subjects from music to commentary on social issues. The reason I choose the topics of mental health awareness, suicide awareness, gender roles, domestic violence, drug abuse, and other similar topics is because I want people to stop …

Adolescent Male Behaviors As Portrayed In The Disney Sitcom Hannah Montana, Erin T. Maurer Nov 2019

Adolescent Male Behaviors As Portrayed In The Disney Sitcom Hannah Montana, Erin T. Maurer

Honors College Theses

This research project uses content analysis to examine themes related to toxic masculinity and misogyny in the sitcom Hannah Montana. In particular, the sitcom’s child character Rico Suave is shown to be misogynistic when interacting with women. There is little literature on the topic of representation of toxic masculinity as shown in child characters, but there are many examples in modern media, such as the trope of the child being attracted to the babysitter, the lifeguard, and the friend of an older sibling. Using similarly-formatted transcripts from seasons two, three, and four, I pulled all lines of dialogue and stage …

Academic Self-Concept As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Gender And Self-Reported Leadership Ability, Jeffrey A. Miles, Stefanie E. Naumann Nov 2019

Academic Self-Concept As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Gender And Self-Reported Leadership Ability, Jeffrey A. Miles, Stefanie E. Naumann

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

One of the most frequently reported student learning outcomes on college campuses is leadership ability. Thus, identifying the factors associated with leadership development is an important area for research. Previous studies have found mixed results in the relationship between gender and leadership perceptions. The current study proposes that academic self-concept intervenes in the relationship between gender and leadership, and helps to explain these earlier mixed findings. In a study of 597 undergraduate students from a private west coast university, we found that academic self-concept fully mediated the relationship between gender and self-reported leadership ability. Implications for research and practice are …

The doctoral advisor, typically the principal investigator (PI), is often characterized as a singular or primary mentor who guides students using a cognitive apprenticeship model. Alternatively, the cascading mentorship model describes the members of laboratories or research groups receiving mentorship from more senior laboratory members and providing it to more junior members (i.e., PIs mentor postdocs, postdocs mentor senior graduate students, senior students mentor junior students, etc.). Here we show that PIs laboratory and mentoring activities do not significantly predict students skill development trajectories, but the engagement of postdocs and senior graduate students in laboratory interactions do. We found that …

Ngo Participation In Global Governance Institutions: International And Domestic Drivers Of Engagement, Laura A. Henry, Lisa Mc Intosh Sundstrom, Carla Winston, Priya Bala-Miller Sep 2019

Ngo Participation In Global Governance Institutions: International And Domestic Drivers Of Engagement, Laura A. Henry, Lisa Mc Intosh Sundstrom, Carla Winston, Priya Bala-Miller

Government Faculty Publications

Global governance institutions (GGIs) increasingly rely upon NGO involvement for expertise, promotion of rules and standards, and democratic legitimacy. Yet NGO participation in GGIs is unevenly distributed by country of origin. This paper examines patterns of NGO participation in GGIs, and how participation is shaped by incentives and pressures at global and national levels. First, we map NGO participation by country of origin across 42 GGIs based on the roles that GGIs grant to NGOs and by variations in domestic conditions of income level and political regime type. Second, to delve more deeply into domestic factors, we provide an exploratory …

Key To Success? Relationship Between Texas Success Initiative Assessments And Course Performance In First-Year, Credit-Bearing English And Math Classes, Ashley F. Carter

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA) exams and student performance in associated content-area courses in postsecondary education. While the number of students attending college is projected to increase (Digest of Education Statistics, 2017; National Center for Education Statistics, 2018), many of them may not be prepared for a college education (Greene & Winters, 2005; Porter & Polikoff, 2012; Royster, Gross, & Hochbein, 2015) and are therefore obligated to enroll in developmental education classes (Bailey, Jeong, & Cho, 2010; Scott-Clayton, Costa, & Belfield, 2014). These courses are meant to provide …

The Impact Of Endrew F. V. Douglas County And Judicial Ideology On Individuals With Disabilities Education Act Fape Determinations In United States District Courts, Chrishawn Sontia Finister

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

The Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA) is legislation intended to ensure that children with disabilities receive a free and appropriate public education (FAPE). Over the last 35 years, the FAPE standard by which special education services were evaluated was determined by the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) ruling in Board of Education of the Hendrick Hudson Central School District v. Rowley (“Rowley”) in 1982. On March 22, 2017, the Rowley 1982 standard of FAPE was altered with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Endrew F. vs. Douglas County School District (commonly referred to as Endrew F.). The law allows …

Dataset: Assessment Of Vigilance Performance And/Or Reliance On Automated Decision Aids: An X-Ray Screening Task, Stephanie Merritt, Lei Shirase, Garett Foster

Psychology Faculty Works

A great deal of interest concerns the study of vigilance performance and trust in automation due to their implications for public safety. The present work contributes to this literature by providing an experimental resource for scholars in need of a vigilance style task. We created a set of 150 stimuli that may be downloaded and used by researchers in future data collections. These stimuli are X-ray images of luggage, and participants indicate whether or not they believe each image contains a dangerous item (simulating airport security screening). Using a sample of 990 adults recruited via MTurk, we normed these items …

Neuroqueering Gender, Ren Koloni May 2019

Neuroqueering Gender, Ren Koloni

Student Research Submissions

Autistic women are much more likely to be misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, and underserved than autistic men, yet our relationship with our identities is much more complicated than simply “underdiagnosis.” At least in part because we are not as interested in or responsive to social norms, we are more likely to be transgender, non-binary, and/or gender non-conforming: some of us may not identify as women at all. Furthermore, because autism is a way of being that is uniquely different from allism (i.e., not being autistic), we are capable of experiencing gender in ways that are inherently unrelatable and inaccessible to allistic people. …

Student Leadership Exchange (SLX)

Prospective students across Illinois work excessively towards the achievement of getting accepted to the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. Though the selection process of applicants is meant to be fair and only admit the most qualified students, it has been found that this process has its flaws. While GPA and SAT scores are factored into these decisions, additional factors such as geographic, gender, and ethnic criteria are involved. Measures such as Affirmative Action are put into place to ensure each student has a fair opportunity to education. However, one result of IMSA’s attempt to comply with its statutory requirement to …

“Do We Teach Subjects Or Students?” Analyzing Science And Mathematics Teacher Conversations About Issues Of Equity In The Classroom, David M. Sparks, Kathryn Pole

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications

Teachers involved in a Master's level course in diversity participated in virtual, synchronous, anonymized discussions around issues of ethnic and racial diversity, gender, and stereotypes that could impact their students’ participation in fields related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Guided by theoretical frameworks from Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) and Critical Race Theory (CRT), a convenience sample of 14 science and mathematics teachers participated in a series of virtual chats using open‐ended questioning and facilitated by two university instructors. Using conversation and critical discourse analyses, three primary themes emerged: understanding of issues related to stereotypes, encouragement of females …
