Designing Neighborhood-Scale Green Infrastructure (Gi) To Improve The Health And Well-Being Of Industry-Adjacent Communities Through Air Pollution Mitigation In Joppa, Texas, Lauren Wardwell

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Ambient outdoor air pollution kills roughly 4.2 million people every year worldwide and is linked as a contributing factor to diseases such as asthma, cancer, infertility, and neurological disorders. In the United States, minority communities are more likely to live near sources of air pollution, such as highways and industrial sites, and therefore face higher risks of developing the associated health difficulties. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), people of color (POC) are exposed to disproportionately higher levels of ambient fine particulate matter (PM) air pollution, regardless of income levels or region. While the EPA monitors and enforces outdoor …

Rainfall-Induced Slope Failure – An Early Warning System, Md Aminul Islam Dec 2021

Rainfall-Induced Slope Failure – An Early Warning System, Md Aminul Islam

Civil Engineering Dissertations

Globally, slope failures cause substantial death tolls and economic loss. Embankments constructed on high plasticity clay are vulnerable to cyclic swelling and shrinkage when subjected to climate. Thus, over time, soil softens and reduces effective shear strength, and shrinkage cracks on slopes can act as pathways for rainfall infiltration, which increases pore water pressure and lowers the shear strength below critical levels, resulting in slope failure. This study aims to develop early warning criteria for rainfall-induced slope failure. Study areas were Tarrant, Dallas, Johnson, and Ellis, where soil types and a humid subtropical climate result in frequent slope failures. The …

Indexing, Querying, Prediction, And Integration For Network-Constrained Moving Objects Databases, Mohammadhani Fouladgar

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations

The emergence and presence of satellites and GPS devices have led to the creation of a huge amounts of spatial and spatio-temporal data, which had significant effects on creating new applications to analyze and mine these data. In this regard, a lot of research has been done on moving objects databases as a part of spatial and spatio-temporal databases. In this dissertation, we focus on those moving objects that are not allowed to move in all directions freely, but they (almost) always are restricted to travel on a specific network. One of the most popular example of these moving objects …

Predictive Modeling With The Soil And Water Assessment Tool (Swat2012) Prior To Design Development In Landscape Architecture: Learning From The Southwestern Medical District In Dallas, Texas, Layal Bitar Ghanem

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Landscape Architecture has recently seen a significant rise in evaluative studies among the scientific and professional community, perhaps as a result of growing concerns related to rapid urbanization, climate change, and environmental degradation (LAF, 2016; Ozdil, 2014). Several methods adopted in evaluative landscape architecture research have typically focused on landscape performance in post implementation conditions, with a relatively superficial use of technology to address contemporary urban problems. However, with the advancement of computer technologies, opportunities to assess and predict environmental landscape performance prior to design development in the site planning process have emerged. The purpose of this research is to …
