Rebranding Lauren Hope Photography, Lauren H. Toomey

Graphic Communication

Designing Neighborhood-Scale Green Infrastructure (Gi) To Improve The Health And Well-Being Of Industry-Adjacent Communities Through Air Pollution Mitigation In Joppa, Texas, Lauren Wardwell May 2022

Designing Neighborhood-Scale Green Infrastructure (Gi) To Improve The Health And Well-Being Of Industry-Adjacent Communities Through Air Pollution Mitigation In Joppa, Texas, Lauren Wardwell

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Ambient outdoor air pollution kills roughly 4.2 million people every year worldwide and is linked as a contributing factor to diseases such as asthma, cancer, infertility, and neurological disorders. In the United States, minority communities are more likely to live near sources of air pollution, such as highways and industrial sites, and therefore face higher risks of developing the associated health difficulties. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), people of color (POC) are exposed to disproportionately higher levels of ambient fine particulate matter (PM) air pollution, regardless of income levels or region. While the EPA monitors and enforces outdoor …

Designing The Civic Commons: How Design Can Foster Social Capital In Civic Spaces In The Context Of Urban Sprawl, Jennifer Jean Sloan May 2020

Designing The Civic Commons: How Design Can Foster Social Capital In Civic Spaces In The Context Of Urban Sprawl, Jennifer Jean Sloan

Public Affairs Dissertations

In modern America, people gather in civic public spaces for many reasons: to celebrate family, gather as a community, engage in commerce, or protest injustices. The design of these spaces is critical to their ability to foster civic participation. Jan Gehl has argued that public spaces should be designed for people and encourage social interactions that build social capital (Gehl, 2006). Social capital is beneficial to individuals and communities in many ways, including political engagement, the economic prosperity of individuals and communities, and the safety and security of the community (Putnam, 1995). It has been said that in public spaces, …

Effects Of Environmental Stressors And Design On Patient Outcomes In Icu Patients, Lauren Lea Mcnary, Jenea Ruttino, Kylie Thanasiu Jan 2017

Effects Of Environmental Stressors And Design On Patient Outcomes In Icu Patients, Lauren Lea Mcnary, Jenea Ruttino, Kylie Thanasiu

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Over four million patients are admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) every year. The ICU, along with many health care settings, is generally regarded as a stress inducing environment, which may contribute to negative patient outcomes. Yet, there has been little progress in developing environments that are optimal to patient healing and using evidence-based design for ICUs. Aspects of environment studied that can be manipulated to increase positive patient outcomes are aroma, light, noise, private rooms, windows, and layout of the room. The purpose of this systematic review is to answer the PICO question, in hospitalized critically ill adults, …

Community Perceptions Of Golf Course Landscapes: Lessons Learned From Arlington, Texas Case Studies, Jon-Michael Clothier Dec 2015

Community Perceptions Of Golf Course Landscapes: Lessons Learned From Arlington, Texas Case Studies, Jon-Michael Clothier

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

The purpose of this study is to identify the resident perceptions of golf course landscapes in communities around golf courses within Arlington, Texas. It specifically focuses on the residents’ feelings evoked by the golf course landscapes as well as any impact to the residents’ lives outside of actually playing golf. The study seeks to find connections between traditional golf course design and urban design around the edges of golf courses extending outward to the surrounding communities. The physical relationships between golf courses with their surrounding communities vary. Especially in suburban settings, there is a strong connection between the course and …

Design Taking Action: A Holistic Approach To Design Problem Solving Applied To Disease Education, Kelly C. Barkhurst Dec 2008

Design Taking Action: A Holistic Approach To Design Problem Solving Applied To Disease Education, Kelly C. Barkhurst

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The role of designer, in fact the entire design field, has changed significantly over the past 15 years. Described broadly, my current view of design is that of a problem solving activity---visually and abstractly. This paper discusses my influences and views of the roles of contemporary designers within the context of a collaborative health education project.;The design of the TakeAction! Addressing Asthma and Diabetes in West Virginia Public Schools CD-ROM teaching tool was the basis of my thesis project. This project was initiated by the West Virginia Asthma Coalition's School and Pediatrics Committee and funded by the West Virginia Department …

The 3 Pigs: Interactive Performance, Ana Magdalena Torres Villarreal May 2007

The 3 Pigs: Interactive Performance, Ana Magdalena Torres Villarreal

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

"The 3 Pigs," by Ana Torres Villarreal, is an interactive performance, a dramatic parody within the realm of conceptual art. Transplanting the moral from a traditional tale, "The Three Little Pigs," to a current world of politics and iconized and institutional ideas, "The 3 Pigs" questions definitions and ways of acting. The objective was to trigger the interactive process and bring awareness to alliances that attribute identities and provokes fear towards the other. The pigs-wolves situation and the gallery-artist situation are related to the U.S.-Mexico situation. Connected by the idea for the need for "walls" to protect' them from a …

Otherworldly Goods, Grant Johnson May 2002

Otherworldly Goods, Grant Johnson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

This thesis presents "democratic" art. As defined by the author, democratic art is work that does not bear the idiosyncratic mark of the artist's hand. It is hoped that such work remains more fully open to the viewer's imaginative involvement than work that bears a more overt trace of authorship. As an invitation to such involvement, and in addition to removing the mark of the hand, the artist also creates interactive pieces, such as large-scale slide puzzles, which can be manipulated by the viewer. With these pieces the viewer can re-organize the composition of the work and thereby take as …
