“My Husband Would Not Help Me, So I Was Driving Over There”: Older Rural Women Experiencing Breast Cancer With A Non-Supportive Intimate Partner, Erika Metzler Sawin
Erika Metzler Sawin
Introduction: This article describes the experiences of older rural women diagnosed with breast cancer while in a non-supportive, and sometimes abusive, intimate relationship. Breast cancer is primarily a disease of older women, and in the USA, a higher percentage of rural women are more than 65 years of age compared with other geographical areas. Many women identify their intimate partner as an important source of support during cancer diagnosis and recovery, but little is known about how women deal with breast cancer while in a relationship self-described as difficult. Methods: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with a convenience sample of …

A New Clear And Present Danger: Security, Freedom And Ordered Liberty On The Home Front During The War Against Terrorism, Beau James Brock
Beau James Brock
Regardless of the foreign policy rationalizations for failing to respond to Osama Bin Laden’s declaration of war against the United States prior to September 11th, we are faced with a de facto state of war, for over a full decade now, that will require an ever vigilant and determined commitment in order to secure the domestic security of our land. The use of available technology to break through our opponents’ intelligence networks has been a vital instrument of victory in past wars and will be in this struggle we now face. But, where is the line marking appropriate federal action …

Economics Versus Politics In Trade Policy, Daron Djerdjian
Economics Versus Politics In Trade Policy, Daron Djerdjian
Daron Djerdjian
Do economies of scale contribute to our understanding of trade policy or is ideology and inequality sufficient? We develop a unified theoretical framework that encompasses both strategic economic and political variables deemed to be important in explaining trade policy. We predict that an increase in the scale effect leads to restrictive trade policies in labor-abundant countries and liberal trade policies in capital-abundant countries. Using cross-country data on economies of scale, ideology, inequality and various measures of trade barriers we confirm our predictions and establish that a unified framework, which incorporates economies of scale in production, performs better in explaining trade …

UT’s Virtual Library Steering Committee is charged to enhance the library’s virtual presence through efficient searching capabilities, interactive features, archiving services, tools for discovery and delivery of scholarly resources, and new technologies that advance and scale services. Trace supports all of these enhancements as UT’s digital showcase. Trace is an evolving concept defined by and for UT’s user communities to promote local and global research. Its services are collaborative, discoverable, contextual, and scale from a single item to data sets in multiple formats. As Trace nears the end of its first year, we’re excited to offer more contributions to the …

American health care woes are no new phenomena, and recent history demonstrates the intensity of the concomitant debate that arises following the proposal of a new system or a special new element-namely, the public insurance option. Early in his tenure, President Clinton dared to undertake daunting reform efforts (including the creation of a public insurance option). Many argue that losing the health care battle hampered Clinton's ability to effectively lead and will damage his long-term reputation. Barack Obama is now deep in the same trenches, and both Democrats and Republicans have begun asking questions: Is it too expensive?; Is it …
Nonlinear Estimation For Arrays Of Chemical Sensors, Randy Paffenroth, Jason Yosinski
Nonlinear Estimation For Arrays Of Chemical Sensors, Randy Paffenroth, Jason Yosinski
Randy C. Paffenroth
Reliable detection of hazardous materials is a fundamental requirement of any national security program. Such materials can take a wide range of forms including metals, radioisotopes, volatile organic compounds, and biological contaminants. In particular, detection of hazardous materials in highly challenging conditions — such as in cluttered ambient environments, where complex collections of analytes are present, and with sensors lacking specificity for the analytes of interest — is an important part of a robust security infrastructure. Sophisticated single sensor systems provide good specificity for a limited set of analytes but often have cumbersome hardware and environmental requirements. On the other …

A Tracker Adjunct Processing System For Reconsideration Of Firm Tracker Decisions, Randy Paffenroth, David Trawick, Benjamin Slocumb
A Tracker Adjunct Processing System For Reconsideration Of Firm Tracker Decisions, Randy Paffenroth, David Trawick, Benjamin Slocumb
Randy C. Paffenroth
Most modern maximum likelihood multiple target tracking systems (e.g., Multiple Hypothesis Tracking (MHT) and Nu-merica's Multiple Frame Assignment (MFA)) need to determine how to separate their input measurements into subsets corresponding to the observations of individual targets. These observation sets form the tracks of the system, and the process of determining these sets is known as data association. Real-time constraints frequently force the use of only the maximum likelihood choice for data association (over some time window), although alternative data association choices may have been considered in the process of choosing the most likely. This paper presents a Tracker Adjunct …
Legal Transplant, Tax Competition And Corporate Tax Models, Carlo Garbarino
Legal Transplant, Tax Competition And Corporate Tax Models, Carlo Garbarino
Carlo Garbarino
This paper aims to contribute an additional layer to the current debate on tax harmonization versus tax competition by adopting a comparative evolutionary analysis to explain corporate tax innovation as a result of tax competition. We shall see that not only do countries compete to attract investment, corporate tax solutions also compete and selectively evolve as a result of this competition (for example, exemption of dividends may prevail over the imputation system, or different kinds of ratios may be available to solve the common problem of limiting interest deductions). We shall see that legal change is prompted by tax solutions …

The Brain Sciences And Criminal Law Norms, Theodore Y. Blumoff
The Brain Sciences And Criminal Law Norms, Theodore Y. Blumoff
Theodore Y. Blumoff
Although neuroscience and the tools of brain imaging are sufficiently well developed to evidence our neurobiology at a level of detail unimaginable until even decade ago (roughly the size of a grain of rice), they are not yet sufficiently developed to be consistently useful in the guilt phase of most criminal trials. Given the advances in imaging and behavioral genetics, however, neuroscience is sufficiently mature today to effect some global procedural and substantive changes in our criminal law jurisprudence – e.g., definitions of, and burdens of proof on the issue of competency. In this work, I survey many of the …
