Non-Contact Heart Rate Estimation In Low Snr Environments Using Mmwave Radar, Chandler J. Bauder, Aly E. Fathy Jan 2022

Non-Contact Heart Rate Estimation In Low Snr Environments Using Mmwave Radar, Chandler J. Bauder, Aly E. Fathy

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- EECS

Extracting accurate heart rate estimates of human subjects from a distance in high-noise scenarios using radar is a common problem. Often, frequency components from sources such as movement and vital signs from other subjects can overpower the weak reflected signal of the heart. In this study, we propose a signal processing scheme using a state-of-the-art Adaptive Multi-Trace Carving algorithm (AMTC) to accurately detect the heart rate signal over time in non-ideal scenarios. In our initial proof-of-concept results, we show a low heart rate estimation mean absolute error (MAE) of 3bpm for a single subject marching in place and less than …

Development Of A Temperature Measurement Camera Using Cost Effective Hardware, Benjamin F. Thieme, Jesse Wilson May 2021

Development Of A Temperature Measurement Camera Using Cost Effective Hardware, Benjamin F. Thieme, Jesse Wilson

Haslam Scholars Projects

The recent outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused lock downs around the globe, forcing many schools and businesses to temporarily close. For them to reopen safely, it is imperative to identify cases quickly so that individuals can be quarantined before the virus spreads to more people. An alternative to testing is to screen individuals for high temperatures that would indicate fevers. With the risk of contagion that occurs during close contact between humans, traditional thermometers may be unsuitable. Thus, the purpose of this design project is to design, construct, and test a temperature measurement system using a thermal camera …

“A Tale Of Twinned Cities”: A Comparative Analysis To Predict Potential Twinning On The Us-Mexico Border, Katherine Fulcher May 2021

“A Tale Of Twinned Cities”: A Comparative Analysis To Predict Potential Twinning On The Us-Mexico Border, Katherine Fulcher

Baker Scholar Projects

Twinning is an official agreement between two cities separated by an international boundary which share cultural or economic ties. Scholarship on twinning primarily focuses on European cases of cross-border integration. Twinning involves a set of border related policies which aim to reduce the physical impact of the border and integrated communities economically, culturally, and socially. The potential for twinning on the US-Mexico border remains an understudied, yet contested question. Some researchers argue US and Mexican cities developed separately and cannot officially integrate. However, this research is limited, as no data set exists allowing for broader analysis. This paper asks where …

Agricultural Development In Rwanda: Commercialization Of The Poultry Sector, Mikayla Prince May 2021

Agricultural Development In Rwanda: Commercialization Of The Poultry Sector, Mikayla Prince

Baker Scholar Projects

Post-genocide Rwanda (1994 - 2020) has augmented participation in global capitalism, assuming that participation will lead to economic prosperity. Restructuring of the agricultural sector has been a primary project in Rwanda’s pursuit for middle-income status, poverty reduction, and improved nutrition. Given Rwandan’s remnant trauma, history of colonialism, and rapid economic restructuring, critical assessment of Rwanda’s agricultural development is warranted with intentional priority given to the well-being of the Rwandan people. In 2017, Tworore Inkoko, Twunguke (TI), a development project in Musanze, Rwanda intended to increase household income and nutrition through broiler chicken production. This study investigated TI’s effectiveness in empowering …

Aid—One Word, Many Theories: An Introduction To The Study Of Foreign Aid, Jacob Welch May 2021

Aid—One Word, Many Theories: An Introduction To The Study Of Foreign Aid, Jacob Welch

Baker Scholar Projects

Since the end of World War Two, foreign aid has been a mainstay of foreign policy. The quantity, direction, and policy objectives of aid shifted several times throughout this time. Despite making up a relatively low proportion of most countries’ budgets, foreign aid has been widely researched and debated. It is the goal of this paper to trace the major theoretical arguments around aid, the historical trends in aid, and the quantitive analysis found in the aid effectiveness literature. In this way, this paper aims to serve as a non-comprehensive introduction to the study of foreign aid.

Comprehensive Overview And Proposal For Future Iranian-American Relations, Elizabeth Ashley Wheeler

Baker Scholar Projects

In the absence a cohesive examination of the history between the United States and Iran, it is the goal of this analysis to present such an examination, starting at the 1951 election of Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh and continuing until the brink-of-war developments in January 2020. By understanding and recognizing the events and their subsequent effects, the analysis thus proposes that the United States and Iran should negotiate / ratify an agreement similar to that of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in order to alleviate the tensions exacerbated in 2020. Therein, a brief summarization and analysis of two …

Where Are The Resources?: Discussing Mental Health In Students Of Color On Utk’S Campus And The Call For Action, Zhannae S. Cummings, Diandra Walker

Black Issues Conference

Racial minority groups experience disparities in mental health and are prone to having more detrimental outcomes than their white counterparts. Current events have heightened the exposure of racial injustices experienced by communities of Black, Indigenous and people of Color (BIPOC). Given this context, the elimination of mental health disparities in people of Color requires critical attention and diligent work more so now than ever before. Culture, climate, and intrinsic bias leave some institute of higher education more challenged in promoting and supporting education for students of Color. Unintended Consequences? The Impact Of Targeted Economic Sanctions On International Terrorism, Hancen A. Sale

Baker Scholar Projects

The effectiveness of economic sanctions cannot be thoroughly examined on the basis of their ability to achieve a stated goal alone. This paper takes abroad look into one of the possible unintended consequences associated with the use of economic sanctions the potential for increased political violence and terrorism. Past theoretical and empirical studies assume the economic impact of sanctions lead to an increase in terrorism, while other findings suggest that most terrorists come from relatively well-educated and high-income backgrounds. In this paper, I employ an event study model to analyze the incidence of terrorism between sender and target countries and …

No Strings Attached? Fdi, Ideology, And Levels Of Democracy In Latin America, Alexander J. Tripp May 2020

No Strings Attached? Fdi, Ideology, And Levels Of Democracy In Latin America, Alexander J. Tripp

Baker Scholar Projects

How does foreign direct investment (FDI) affect the levels of democracy in developing states when taking their political ideologies into consideration? Scholars have traditionally viewed FDI as conducive to economic and political liberalization in developing countries. However, few studies have analyzed the effects of FDI on democracy or how the political ideologies of host governments might condition the effects of FDI. This investigation identifies two separate types of FDI at play in Latin America−state-led and market-led FDI−epitomized by Chinese and American multinational corporations (MNCs), respectively. I hypothesize that state-led FDI will have no effect on the levels of democracy in …

The Utility Of Banking: Regulation, Inequality, And The Public Option, Jay Hearn

Baker Scholar Projects

What is the effect of public utility banking regulation on inequality and access to basic banking services? In this paper, I will examine banking during three periods of American history. The first period, stretching from 1865 to 1911, was marked primarily by private banking which led to severe financial crises and the rise of unbanked and underbanked Americans. The second period, stretching from 1911 to 1967, marks a fundamentally unique period in American banking wherein banking was largely treated as a public utility rather than as solely a private enterprise. This period saw the implementation of postal banking, public banking, …

The Black Narrative, Karmen Alexia Jones

Black Issues Conference

Through art and literature, we are able to create our own of narratives of any cultural experience. In this scenario, the African American experience can be exemplified through methods of reiterating or recreating. Artists can choose to reiterate or repeat a narrative that meets the status quo of stereotypes that have already been established through social, civil, economic traditions of teaching, or an artist can recreate and bring light to a new aspect to the complexity of the humanisation and emotional journeys of Black people.

The purpose of this discussion is to highlight the purposes within each selected work or …

Distressing Aspects Of Women's Roles, Sandra P. Thomas Jan 1997

Distressing Aspects Of Women's Roles, Sandra P. Thomas

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Nursing

Individuals internalize the roles they play and the statuses they occupy in their social networks. It logically follows that the benefits and costs of women's role commitments may be critically important to their physical and mental health. This literature review focuses on distressing or negative aspects of enacting the specific primary roles of worker, wife, and mother. Vicarious stress and inadequate social support for women in these roles may contribute to immunosupression and disease vulnerability. Some women may choose the sick role as a means of escape from taxing role responsibilities. Future directions for women's health research are suggested, along …
