The Novel Game Design Lab, Joshua Whorton Nov 2023

The Novel Game Design Lab, Joshua Whorton

Symposium of Student Scholars

The Novel Game Design Lab studies how we can combine new technology and novel approaches to game design to create new and interesting gaming experiences. For this year’s symposium, we will be exhibiting Relic 2D, a platform for a variety of studies, including studies of engaging minimalist narratives and game play, as well as player performance and accessibility issues. The overall aim of projects done using Relic 2D is to identify techniques and technologies that let developers achieve a high degree of playability and polish with less development time. We will also be showing preliminary work for TechnoWizard, a VR …

Interaction In Games: Custom Driving Controller, Christian Crank Nov 2023

Interaction In Games: Custom Driving Controller, Christian Crank

Symposium of Student Scholars

The problem I am trying to solve pertains to the high entry costs and the requirements to fully enjoy driving games. Driving games always sound like a fun experience, but without the right controller the game feels lackluster, uncomfortable, and not quite immersive. The problem is, if someone wants a gaming experience that makes the game feel natural and sensory, they may need to drop hundreds to thousands of dollars. Furthermore, they don’t even know if the expensive equipment will provide them with the experience they want. These expensive controllers are set up in a way to be universal and …

Interaction In Games: Digital Board Game Hybrid, Ryan Whisenhunt, Logan Haines Nov 2023

Interaction In Games: Digital Board Game Hybrid, Ryan Whisenhunt, Logan Haines

Symposium of Student Scholars

The realm of digital board game hybrids is a relatively new field, and a majority of games currently use computerization for casual board games or accentuating flavor. There is still plenty of room to use these ideas for more complex board games and means. In this study, we explore the avenues in which digital implementation of physical games can provide a streamlined and accessible gameplay experience. Participants in the study will be given a chance to play a short version of the game. A retrospective will be conducted after, where respondents are interviewed on how well the computer supported the …

Encrypted Malicious Network Traffic Detection Using Machine Learning, Niklas Knipschild Apr 2023

Encrypted Malicious Network Traffic Detection Using Machine Learning, Niklas Knipschild

Symposium of Student Scholars

The research project aims to find ways to detect malicious packets inside encrypted network traffic. In addition to this goal maintaining user privacy is a priority. As encryption has become less expensive to implement more and more network traffic is encrypted. Currently, 90% of all network traffic is encrypted, and this trend is expected to increase. The creators of malware areemploying various methods to ensure delivery of their malware, including encryption. One proposed method to combat this suggests implementing machine learning with various algorithms to analyze packet attributes to determine if they contain malware, without actually knowing what's inside …

Coneslayer Dataset - Orange Traffic Cones In Context, Matthew Krupczak, Brandon Solon, Toai Dong, Hanson Chaney, Seth Canada, Ethan Leitner, Sahan Reddy, Fernando Martinez Jan 2023

Coneslayer Dataset - Orange Traffic Cones In Context, Matthew Krupczak, Brandon Solon, Toai Dong, Hanson Chaney, Seth Canada, Ethan Leitner, Sahan Reddy, Fernando Martinez

Datasets

The Kennesaw State University's undergraduate Electric Vehicle (racing) Team, EVT, has created a lightweight neural network called "Coneslayer" for detecting orange traffic cones. As a very small model, Coneslayer has only around 6 million parameters, making it ideal for use on edge devices where processing power is limited.

Using a custom dataset of over 11,000 training images, we achieved good inference performance and accuracy for a diverse array of cone shapes and sizes while maintaining a low rate of false positives

To make our results reproducible, such as for training larger more accurate models, we are sharing this custom dataset.

Once Upon An American Dream: What The American Dream Means To Different People Aug 2021

Once Upon An American Dream: What The American Dream Means To Different People

Symposium of Student Scholars

One of the most prominent ethoses of the United States of America is that of the “American Dream.” While James Truslow Adams was the person to coin the term “American Dream,” the concept dates back to the Declaration of Independence, which states that all men have the right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” While the “American Dream” can be thought of as a single concrete goal, Ştiuliuc argues, however, that “it constitutes a cultural narrative with manifold implications in the multiple and distinct immigrant stories that created America” (2011:364). In order to determine the validity of this …

How Theatre Produced By Autistic People Dismantles The Medical Model Of Disability, Ira Eidle Aug 2021

How Theatre Produced By Autistic People Dismantles The Medical Model Of Disability, Ira Eidle

Symposium of Student Scholars

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disability that has a long history of being misunderstood. Said misunderstandings have led to falsehoods about autism and autistic people. The stigma surrounding autism encourages non-autistic people to see themselves as the best advocates for autism, leading to non-autistic people speaking over autistic people constantly. This has come to be known as the medical model of disability. Most autistic people do not consider autism to be a mental illness or disorder. (Kupferstein 2019) That is why when autistic people become informed on these aspects and band together, those misunderstandings can be mitigated. One such way is …

Amazon: A Maze Through China - An International Marketing Case Study, Hanane Goubil Aug 2021

Amazon: A Maze Through China - An International Marketing Case Study, Hanane Goubil

Symposium of Student Scholars

Amazon is an e-commerce technology company best known for its fast delivering time and for being one of the tops of the big four technology companies in the United States. Despite its success in the U.S. and several countries abroad, it has struggled to succeed in China since 2004 where Alibaba and JD.com control 82% of the market. This is due to Amazon failing to compete with Alibaba and neglecting to acclimatize their online offers to appease Chinese customers’ preferences. An example of this is that Alibaba has its own payment system called Alipay, while Amazon had yet to include …

Home Sweet Home: An Architectural Analysis Of Houses During The Middle Mississippian Period In The Etowah River Valley, Jordan Farkas May 2021

Home Sweet Home: An Architectural Analysis Of Houses During The Middle Mississippian Period In The Etowah River Valley, Jordan Farkas

Symposium of Student Scholars

The Mississippian period lasted from AD 1000 to AD 1550. It is divided into three different subperiods, Early (AD 1100-1200), Middle (AD 1200-1375), and Late (AD 1375-1550). Mississippian life, in general, is characterized by a ranked society, large villages located on floodplains near major rivers, a subsistence base centered on maize agriculture, as well as the use of triangular-shaped projectile points in hunting and new forms and decorative motifs on pottery for cooking and storage. One of the biggest developments in the Mississippian period revolves around house architecture and construction practices. After AD 1200, house design shifts away from rectangular …

Preeclampsia In African America Women, Breanna Shoultz, Qweita Eastman, Taylor Maynor, Konstanz Ewing May 2021

Preeclampsia In African America Women, Breanna Shoultz, Qweita Eastman, Taylor Maynor, Konstanz Ewing

Symposium of Student Scholars

Background: Every year in the U.S., there are 700 pregnancy related deaths that occur, with ⅔ of those deaths being preventable. African American women are 3-4% more likely to die of pregnancy related complications, mainly preeclampsia, than any other population. Preeclampsia is related to cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, which Black women are more at risk for. Objective: This systematic review will explore how preventative techniques such as the use of diuretics and physical activity during pregnancy will decrease the risk for preeclampsia in African American women compared to untreated preeclampsia complications that affect mortality rates upon delivery. …

From Teacher To Teacher-Leader: A Phenomenographic Study Of Transition, Jennifer Santi Dec 2020

From Teacher To Teacher-Leader: A Phenomenographic Study Of Transition, Jennifer Santi

Doctor of Education in Teacher Leadership Dissertations

As Education evolves, the roles within traditional teaching and learning also evolve. School structures change and leadership roles within those structures change as well, creating and recreating the educational experience for students and practitioners alike. As these structures change the nature of education, the roles found within them also transform what it means to be a professional educator. Increases in teacher-leadership positions have led to more instructional coaching roles for teachers and it is necessary to understand how those roles are perceived by those that are now changing the nature of their chosen work. As teachers leave the classroom to …

Forgiveness, Freedom And The Inmate Issue, Taylor Smith

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

Forgiveness Freedom and the Inmate Issue:

It is no secret that the United States has a mass incarceration problem. The war on drugs, traffic violations, and the Three Strikes Law, are just pieces of the systems being used to repeatedly place people behind bars. What we are facing now as a society is the repercussions of reintegrating under educated, digitally literate, mentally abandoned individuals back into society. In addition to post jail operatives like parole fees, fines and probation scheduling are re-sentencing these individuals into a society they no longer relate to, that socially struggle to adapt to and that …

Challenges In Conducting Online Survey Research Of The Relationship Between Unit-Level Perceived Team Trustworthiness And Clinical And Operational Outcomes, Nancy Ballard, Lynn Varagona, Rob Stilson, Kimberly Knotts, Joan Sacerio Mar 2020

Challenges In Conducting Online Survey Research Of The Relationship Between Unit-Level Perceived Team Trustworthiness And Clinical And Operational Outcomes, Nancy Ballard, Lynn Varagona, Rob Stilson, Kimberly Knotts, Joan Sacerio

Faculty Articles

When conducting online survey research, obtaining an adequate response rate in order to have meaningful, reliable data can be challenging. In our study examining hospital unit-level data, a 40% response rate was needed to adequately reflect the degree to which unit staff perceived one another as trustworthy. In addition, approximately 150 units were needed to analyze the relationship between perceived trustworthiness and selected operational and quality outcomes.

In spite of following best practices for survey research (e.g., careful communication planning, short survey length) in a multi-hospital study system, most of the units’ response rates were inadequate to include the units …

A Model Of A Multilateral Proxy War With Spillovers, Aniruddha Bagchi, Joao Ricardo Faria, Timothy Matthews Jun 2019

A Model Of A Multilateral Proxy War With Spillovers, Aniruddha Bagchi, Joao Ricardo Faria, Timothy Matthews

Economics, Finance & Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Motivated by the war in Syria and the ascension of ISIS, this paper models a proxy war with three sponsors and three combatants as a dynamic game. Sponsors are leaders that provide resources for combatants to fight each other. Sponsors 1 and 2 have strong aversion to sponsor 3’s proxy, but not against each other. Three pure strategy equilibria exist in the game. When the ex post value of winning is small, all players fight in equilibrium. However, when the ex post value of winning is large, in equilibrium either sponsors 1 and 2 coordinate their actions, with one of …

Simple Analytics Of The Impact Of Terror Generation On Attacker–Defender Interactions, Timothy Matthews, Aniruddha Bagchi, Joao Ricardo Faria Jun 2019

Simple Analytics Of The Impact Of Terror Generation On Attacker–Defender Interactions, Timothy Matthews, Aniruddha Bagchi, Joao Ricardo Faria

Economics, Finance & Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

A simple Attacker-Defender interaction is analyzed, in which a single terrorist (denoted T) may attack a single target in the homeland of a government/state (denoted G). The interaction is modelled as a one-shot sequential move game in which G first chooses how heavily to defend the target, after which T chooses whether or not to stage an attack. T’s benefit from a successful attack is allowed to be increasing in the quantity of resources that G allocates to defense. In the context of terrorism, that assumption has multiple reasonable interpretations, including situations in which: (i) citizens of the target country …

A Study Of The Effects Of Certificate Of Need Law On Inpatient Occupancy Rates, Jomon A. Paul, Huan Ni, Aniruddha Bagchi Feb 2019

A Study Of The Effects Of Certificate Of Need Law On Inpatient Occupancy Rates, Jomon A. Paul, Huan Ni, Aniruddha Bagchi

Economics, Finance & Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Increasing healthcare costs and the deterioration of healthcare quality have always been major concerns to policy makers in the United States, and Certificate of Need (CON) law has been implemented as one way to curb wasteful healthcare resource use. From a theoretical standpoint, CON can lead to a reduction in the number of beds as well as in the number of inpatient days (possibly by shortening the length of patient stay). However, these two effects impact inpatient occupancy rate in opposite directions. We test empirically to find out which of these two effects dominate. In this study, we investigate the …
