Syria In Search Of A Political Solution: Toward Functional Coexistence, Tatsushi Arai
Tatsushi Arai
This working paper argues that the use of chemical weapons in Syria and a series of events that took place in international diplomacy, led primarily by Washington and Moscow, are significant, but the political momentum generated by these events must be directed to generate a long-term political solution that addresses the root causes of the conflict.

In this essay, we examine the assumptions underlying natural science, social science, and the humanities. More specifically, we suggest that social science in general and leisure science in particular be guided by a different set of assumptions than those guiding natural science and the humanities. Drawing on the Aristotelian idea of phronesis, we propose that value rationality more so than instrumental rationality guide social scientific inquiry, and that social science in general, and leisure science in particular, be viewed as a bridge between natural science and the humanities

Efficient Water Conservation In Agriculture For Growing Urban Water Demands In Jordan, Raed Al-Tabini, A.R. Octavio, A,W. Frank, R. Phillips

A significant challenge worldwide is to increase food supply to accommodate a population growing to 10 billion in the face of climate change. Per capita water supply in Jordan is among the world’s lowest. Despite this scarcity, three quarters of Jordan’s water use is consumed by irrigated agriculture, while producing low economic values at the margin compared to urban uses. However, irrigated agriculture supports Jordan’s food security, so its policymakers continue to examine measures to produce more crop‐per‐drop in irrigated agriculture to permit scarce water to meet growing urban demands. This paper examines economically efficient measures to conserve water in …

Are We Really Brands?, Trent Hennessey
Trent Hennessey
In 1969, Philip Kotler and Sidney Levy argued the frontiers of marketing could be expanded to include the health, education and arts sectors, places and ideas… and people. But are we really brands? To answer this question, this article reports on the lived experience of people in the know: high-profile self-marketers.

Empirical Evidence Of The Stock Market's (Mis)Pricing Of Customer Satisfaction, Don O'Sullivan, Mark Hutchinson, Vincent O'Connell
Don O'Sullivan
Recent portfolio studies provide conflicting evidence on whether the stock market (mis)prices the value of customer satisfaction, as measured by the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), and whether ACSI-based trading strategies provide market beating returns. The current research aims to shed new light on these issues. We reexamine two ACSI-based trading strategies considered in prior research. Applying a methodology which deals with three interlinking issues: risk adjustment, abnormal returns estimation and portfolio aggregation, we find that the trading strategies do not provide compelling evidence that the market mis-prices the value of customer satisfaction. Our study contributes to the current debate …
