In Vitro Haematopoiesis Of A Novel Dendritic-Like Cell Present In Murine Spleen, Jonathan Tan, Helen O'Neill

Jonathan Tan

Abstract: Dendritic cells (DC) are important antigen presenting cells (APC) which induce and control the adaptive immune response. In spleen alone, multiple DC subsets can be distinguished by cell surface marker phenotype. Most of these have been shown to develop from progenitors in bone marrow and to seed lymphoid and tissue sites during development. This study advances in vitro methodology for haematopoiesis of dendritic-like cells from progenitors in spleen. Since spleen progenitors undergo differentiation in vitro to produce these cells, the possibility exists that spleen represents a specific niche for differentiation of this subset. The fact that an equivalent cell …

Investigation Of Murine Spleen As A Niche For Hematopoiesis., Jonathan Tan, Helen O'Neill Sep 2015

Investigation Of Murine Spleen As A Niche For Hematopoiesis., Jonathan Tan, Helen O'Neill

Jonathan Tan

Background Spleen as a lymphoid tissue is specialized for monitoring blood and mounting immunity against blood-borne antigens. Antigen-presenting cells present in spleen commonly develop from bone marrow-derived precursors that enter blood circulation. However, a distinct splenic myeloid antigen-presenting cell subset described in this laboratory, namely “dendritic-like cells” (L-DC), has been hypothesized not to share a bone marrow origin. Methods In this study, the presence of endogenous hematopoietic progenitors in spleen was investigated by transplanting intact spleen into allotype-distinct recipients and monitoring development of progeny cells in grafted tissues. Results Successful engraftment of donor spleens was achieved for up to 4 …

Constructing Family: A Typology Of Voluntary Kin, Leslie Baxter, Dawn Braithwaite Aug 2014

Constructing Family: A Typology Of Voluntary Kin, Leslie Baxter, Dawn Braithwaite

Dawn O. Braithwaite

This study explored how participants discursively rendered voluntary kin relationships sensical and legitimate. Interpretive analyses of 110 interviews revealed four main types of voluntary kin: (i) substitute family, (ii) supplemental family, (iii) convenience family, and (iv) extended family. These types were rendered sensical and legitimated by drawing on the discourse of the traditional family. Except for the extended family, three of four voluntary kin family types were justified by an attributed deficit in the blood and legal family. Because voluntary kin relationships are not based on the traditional criteria of association by blood or law, members experience them as potentially …

Radical Sydney - Places, Portraits And Unruly Episodes, Terry Irving, Rowan Cahill Aug 2014

Radical Sydney - Places, Portraits And Unruly Episodes, Terry Irving, Rowan Cahill

Terry Irving

Sydney is represented to its citizens and to the rest of the world as a postcard, an impressive, beautiful city, a desirable tourist destination.

But there has always been another Sydney not viewed so fondly by the city’s rulers, a radical Sydney they are intent on ‘disappearing’ beneath concrete and glass. In the arc of working-class suburbs to the south and west, menace and disaffection developed. From the early nineteenth century through to the late twentieth century these suburbs were large and explosive places of marginalised ideas, bohemian neighbourhoods, dissident politics and contentious action.

Through a series of snapshots of …

Predictable Responses In Currency Markets To Macroeconomic News: A Trading System Approach, Bruce Vanstone, Warwick Schneller Jul 2014

Predictable Responses In Currency Markets To Macroeconomic News: A Trading System Approach, Bruce Vanstone, Warwick Schneller

Bruce Vanstone

This paper analyses how the release of a macro news event affects exchange rate behaviour. The event examined was the US non-farm payrolls announcement and the British Pound (GBP)/ US Dollar (USD) were the selected currency pair. A trading system model was developed based on a formal methodology previously applied to equity markets. The system examined the currencies reaction to the announcement in determining whether any behavioural patterns were present. Based on the trading system, no exploitable trading patterns were found.

Neue Wege Zum Kunden : Innovationen In Der Kunde-Bank-Interaktion, Thomas Puschmann, Till Moewes, Rainer Alt

Rainer Alt

Influencing Metacognition Through Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning: Lessons Learned From A Faculty Learning Community, Sara Ahten, Rob Anson, Ingrid Brudenell, James Goodman, Eric Orton, Kathy Reavy

Sara M. Ahten

Over an academic year, five faculty and one staff member from diverse disciplines at Boise State University formed a faculty learning community (FLC). Meeting in-person twice a month, the community members worked to complete scholarly group and individual learning projects. Metacognition emerged as a theme and goal for collaborative computer-supported learning activities. They developed a model that fostered metacognition within the FLC as well as in student-focused learning projects. Overall, the projects illustrate the model and how faculty can influence metacognition though computer-supported collabora- tive learning. Specific applications and suggestions to promote learning are included.

Expression Of Acetate Permease-Like (Apl) Genes In Subsurface Communities Of Geobacter Species Under Fluctuating Acetate Concentrations, Derek Lovley, Hila Elifantz, Lucie N'Guessan, Paula Mouser, Kenneth Williams, Michael Wilkins, Carla Risso, Dawn Holmes, Philip Long

Carla Risso

The addition of acetate to uranium-contaminated aquifers in order to stimulate the growth and activity of Geobacter species that reduce uranium is a promising in situ bioremediation option. Optimizing this bioremediation strategy requires that sufficient acetate be added to promote Geobacter species growth. We hypothesized that under acetate-limiting conditions, subsurface Geobacter species would increase the expression of either putative acetate symporters genes (aplI and aplII). Acetate was added to a uranium-contaminated aquifer (Rifle, CO) in two continuous amendments separated by 5 days of groundwater flush to create changing acetate concentrations. While the expression of aplI in monitoring well D04 (high …
