Pride Against Prejudice: Haitians In The United States, Alex Stepick, Nancy Foner
Alex Stepick
This book describes the struggle of Haitians in the United States, the strain between pride in their Haitian roots and prejudice against Haitians, and its causes and consequences for approximately 500,000 Haitians in the U.S. The book examines the problems of prejudice, economics and immigration Haitians confront, along with their pride and resources of family, community and culture. Haitians reflect continuing difficulties in America concerning race, ethnicity and nationality. Part of the New Immigrants Series, edited by Nancy Foner. Esmonde Higgins - Politics As Intellectual Practice, Terry Irving
Terence H Irving, Dr (Terry)
This chapter traces Esmonde Higgins' struggle to define his intellectual practice from 1919 to 1954, using his private correspondence and his published writings. It divides his reflections into three parts: alienation, practice, and contradictory aspects of practice. It describes his route from Communist bureaucratic practice to having conversations 'about human interests' with workers as equals in adult education classes and informal domestic gatherings.

Religiosity, Sexual Activity, And Attitudes Of Sexual Permissiveness Among Older Adolescents, Richard Fehring, K Cheever, K German, C Philpot
Richard J Fehring
This study investigates religiosity, sexual activity, and sexual permissiveness among older adolescents. Eighty-two college students completed a survey that measured religiosity, sexual permissiveness, self-esteem, frequency of recent sexual encounters, and motivators for sexual activity or abstinence. Guilt, prayer, organized religious activity, and religious well-being predicted fewer sexual encounters. Orthodox beliefs, participation in organized religious activities, and highly-rated importance of faith predicted less permissive sexual attitudes. We conclude that guilt and religious activity can be good motivators for decreasing sexual encounters. We recommend that health practitioners encourage participation in religious activity among adolescents.

Multiparty Electoral Competition In The Netherlands And Germany: A Model Based On Multinomial Probit, Kevin Quinn, Norman Schofeld, Andrew Martin, Andrew Whitford
Kevin M. Quinn
A typical assumption of electoral models of party competition is that parties adopt policy positions so as to maximize expected vote share. Here we use Euro-barometer survey data and European elite-study data from 1979 for the Netherlands and Germany to construct a stochastic model of voter response, based on multinomial probit estimation. For each of these countries, we estimate a pure spatial electoral voting model and a joint spatial model. The latter model also includes individual voter and demographic characteristics. The pure spatial models for the two countries quite accurately described the electoral response as a stochastic function of party …

Health States Following Head And Neck Cancer Treatment: Patient, Health-Care Professional, And Public Perspectives, Vishram Jalukar, Gerry Funk, Alan Christensen, Lucy Karnell, Patricia Moran

Background This study investigated the assignment of preference values to health states which may follow head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment. Preference values for these health states were provided by HNC patients, HNC health-care providers, and a group of college students representing individuals with little knowledge of HNC.
Methods A time trade-off technique was used by participants to assign preference values to four health states in the domains of appearance, eating, speech, breathing, pain, and work/social functioning.
Results Patients' and health-care professionals' rank-ordered preference value scores for health states in appearance, breathing, eating, and speech were not significantly different (p …
