Cultural Industries And Cultural Policy: A Critique Of Recent Discourses In Regional Economic Development, Chris Gibson, Natascha Klocker Nov 2013

Cultural Industries And Cultural Policy: A Critique Of Recent Discourses In Regional Economic Development, Chris Gibson, Natascha Klocker

Natascha Klocker

The cultural industries (sometimes referred to as 'creative industries') are an increasingly common component of urban and regional economic development discourse, connected to an acknowledgement of the contribution of creativity to economic performance and, more generally, their power to transform images and identities for places. Such discourses have become more pervasive with a set of key books - most notably Charles Landry's The Creative City (2001), and Florida's The Rise of the Creative Class (2002) - that have become popular among both economic development planners and cultural policy makers. This paper seeks to intervene in the discourses established by these …

The 'Cultural Turn' In Australian Regional Economic Development Discourse: Neoliberalising Creativity?, Chris Gibson, Natascha Klocker

Chris Gibson

Regional economic policy-makers are increasingly interested in the contribution of creativity to the economic performance of regions and, more generally, in its power to transform the images and identities of places. This has constituted a 'cultural turn', of sorts, away from an emphasis on macro-scale projects and employment schemes, towards an interest in the creative industries, entrepreneurial culture and innovation. This paper discusses how recent discourses of the role of 'creativity' in regions have drawn upon, and contributed to, particular forms of neoliberalisation. Its focus is the recent application of a statistical measure - Richard Florida's (2002) 'creativity index' - …

Exploring On-Line Communities - Supporting Physical And Health Education Professional Development Opportunities., Gregg Rowland, Lori Lockyer, John Patterson

Professor Lori Lockyer

In an era of limited resources across educational sectors, academics associated with faculties of education are under increasing pressure to find innovative ways to support their teaching and research activities, - activities with which collaboration and interaction with pre-service teachers, practicing teachers and fellow academics is crucial. As such, developing a sustained community that involves such representative members is paramount for academics. A team at the University of Wollongong has initiated this concept through research and development of the 'ActiveHealth' learning community for physical and health educators. Whilst it is envisaged that such a project will take time to establish, …

Chuc Huu Nguyen

The objective of the present work is to demonstrate the efficiency and feasibility of NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) based conducting polymer actuator that is fabricated into a micro zoon lens driver. Unlike the traditional conducting polymer that normally operates in a liquid, the proposed actuator successfully provides fairly effective driving performance for the zoom lens system in a dry environment. And this paper is including the experiment results for an efficiency improvement. The result suggested by an experiment was efficient in micro optical zoom lens system. In addition, the developed design method of actuator was given consideration to design the …

Understanding The Development Potential Of Worker Remittance Securitization, Heather Hughes Apr 2013

Understanding The Development Potential Of Worker Remittance Securitization, Heather Hughes

Heather Hughes

Financial institutions are seeking to leverage the value of the cash that emigrant workers remit to their home countries. Specifically, banks in developing countries have securitized remittance cash flows. The size and stability of worker remittances have caused a surge of interest among financial institutions, academics and others in recent years. Remittance securitizations - or, issuances of remittance-backed bonds - present specific instances in which parties in remittance-receiving countries have actually harnessed the value of remittances in order to access capital markets. Remittance flow securitization can enable developing region banks to raise funds at advantageous rates. Because these future-flow transactions …

The 1997 Australia-Indonesia Maritime Boundary Treaty: A Secure Legal Regime For Offshore Resource Development?, Max Herriman, Ben Tsamenyi Mar 2013

The 1997 Australia-Indonesia Maritime Boundary Treaty: A Secure Legal Regime For Offshore Resource Development?, Max Herriman, Ben Tsamenyi

Professor Ben M Tsamenyi

The Treaty between the Government of Australia and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia Establishing an Exclusive Economic Zone Boundary and Certain Seabed Boundaries was signed in Perth, Australia, on March 14, 1997. The Treaty establishes an area of overlapping jurisdiction in the Timor Sea in which the exclusive economic zone of Indonesia overlays the continental shelf of Australia. Although the 1992 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea does not provide well for such a situation, and many other provisions of the Law of the Sea Convention relate to the coastal state in a manner which …

Development And Validation Of The Solution-Focused Inventory, Anthony Grant, Michael Cavanagh, Sabina Kleitman, Gordon Spence, Michaela Lakota, Nickolas Yu Feb 2013

Development And Validation Of The Solution-Focused Inventory, Anthony Grant, Michael Cavanagh, Sabina Kleitman, Gordon Spence, Michaela Lakota, Nickolas Yu

Gordon B Spence

Solution-focused coaching and solution-focused therapy are strengths-based approaches which emphasize people's resources and resilience and how these can be used in the pursuit of purposeful, positive change. The Solution-focused Inventory (SFI) is a 12-item scale with three subscales: Problem Disengagement, Goal Orientation and Resource Activation. Three studies in this article provide support for the validity of the SFI as a measure of solution-focused thinking. The SFI negatively correlated with psychopathology and positively correlated with measures of well-being, resilience and perspective taking. Test-retest reliability over 16 weeks was 0.84. Cronbach's alpha for the 12-item scale was 0.84. It also demonstrates sensitivity …

Further Development Of Evidence-Based Coaching: Lessons From The Rise And Fall Of The Human Potential Movement, Gordon Spence Feb 2013

Further Development Of Evidence-Based Coaching: Lessons From The Rise And Fall Of The Human Potential Movement, Gordon Spence

Gordon B Spence

Although several authors have argued for the development of an evidence-based approach to coaching practice, few attempts have been made to draw support for these arguments by examining events of the recent past. This paper seeks to learn some lessons from history by exploring events surrounding the rise and fall of the human potential movement (HPM), which occurred between the 1940s and 1970s. The demise of the HPM is of relevance to the coaching industry because it powerfully illustrates how the promise and potential of innovative practices can be easily lost when its practitioners become disconnected from theoretically sound rationales …

A Contribution To Research And Development In The Carer Support Sector: Lessons On Effective Caring, Kathryn Williams, Alan Owen Feb 2013

A Contribution To Research And Development In The Carer Support Sector: Lessons On Effective Caring, Kathryn Williams, Alan Owen

Alan G Owen

The importance of supporting carers in their roles is now recognised in government policy at all levels and there is ample scope for improving the service system as well as the evidence base for promoting effective interventions. This paper summarises the findings of a project to review the literature on effective caring that was carried out as part of a larger body of work by one research centre working in the area of carer needs assessment. The aim of the project was to identify best practice models, as well as particular types of services that may benefit specific sub-groups of …

Development Of Pragmatic Language Comprehension In Finnish-Speaking Children, Soile Loukusa, Eeva Leinonen, Nuala Ryder Feb 2013

Development Of Pragmatic Language Comprehension In Finnish-Speaking Children, Soile Loukusa, Eeva Leinonen, Nuala Ryder

Eeva Leinonen

This research explores the development of pragmatic comprehension within the framework of relevance theory. Participants were 210 typically developing Finnish children aged from 3 to 9 years. The children were asked questions targeting the pragmatic processes of reference assignment, enrichment and implicature, as proposed by relevance theory. Results indicate that increasing ability to use contextual information in comprehension is related to age. The largest increase in correct answers occurred between the ages of 3 and 4 years. Answering reference assignment questions was not problematic for any of the age groups. Answering enrichment and implicature questions reflected the children's increasing ability …

Development Of Answers And Explanations To Contextually Demanding Questions: A Study Of Three- To Nine-Year-Old Finnish Children, Soile Loukusa, Eeva Leinonen, Nuala Ryder

Eeva Leinonen

This paper presents some findings about studies investigating how children's ability to answer pragmatically demanding questions and explain their correct answers develops between the ages of 3 and 9 years in Finnish children (Loukusa, 2007; Loukusa, Leinonen & Ryder, 2007; Loukusa, Ryder, & Leinonen, in press). In this paper we summarize the results concerning questions demanding processing of implicatures, routines and feelings. The results of these studies showed that the largest increase in answers to routine and implicature questions occurred between the ages of three and four. In feeling questions rapid development occurred between ages of three and five. After …

Are There Different Neural Mechanisms Responsible For Three Stages Of Weight Gain Development In Anti-Psychotic Therapy: Temporally Based Hypothesis, Nagesh Pai, Chao Deng, Shae-Leigh Vella, David Castle, Xu-Feng Huang Feb 2013

Are There Different Neural Mechanisms Responsible For Three Stages Of Weight Gain Development In Anti-Psychotic Therapy: Temporally Based Hypothesis, Nagesh Pai, Chao Deng, Shae-Leigh Vella, David Castle, Xu-Feng Huang

Xu-Feng Huang

Weight gain as a result of atypical anti-psychotic treatment is a common issue with different atypical anti-psychotic treatments causing differing magnitudes of weight gain. Although differing amounts of weight gain result from different atypical agents little is known about the temporal course of weight gain in anti- psychotic treatment. Specifically is the time course of weight gain comparable across different agents. Therefore this article reviews the temporal course of weight gain for three common atypical anti-psychotics namely; clozapine, olanzapine and risperidone. It is evident that all three of these agents exhibit similar although at distinct magnitudes temporal courses of weight …
