When young adults have high self-efficacy, they tend to exhibit more resilience to stress and other mental health problems. Additionally, women are reported to experience depression at higher rates than men, which might be explained by potential gender bias in current diagnostic criteria. Our study examined the influence of gender and mental health self-efficacy on depression symptoms as well as the interaction of these two variables on depression outcomes in college aged-students. Participants (N = 58) were tasked to fill out an anonymous Qualtrics survey based on the Gender Inclusive Depression Scale (GIDS; Martin et al. (2013), and an additional …

This study seeks to shine a light on the phenomenon known as “hanger.” The phenomenon suggests as an individual becomes hungry they will, in turn, become angry and also likely to be short tempered. Impact Of Identity Conflict On Onset Of Depressive Symptoms In Adolescents: A Review, Jamie Humphrey
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
This literature review aimed to investigate the potential relationship between conflicts in identity development and the onset of depression in adolescence. Much of the research on the matter of depression in adolescents is consistent in identifying the many factors that may contribute to the onset of depressive symptoms. These factors include the individual’s sex, tendency to ruminate or co-ruminate during a depressive episode, the awareness of the individual’s social network in regard to the individual’s depression, cultural and ethnic differences, and parental behaviors. The literature review also revealed a variety of environmental factors which may contribute to depression and which, …

Center for Applied Research on Aging and Health Research Papers
Anxiety and depression have been well documented as affective consequences of functional impairment. Little research, however, has examined factors that moderate these associations. The present cross-sectional study examined the role of spiritual well-being in buffering the impact of functional difficulty on the anxiety and depressive symptoms of 319 functionally vulnerable community-dwelling elders, aged 70 or older, participating in a 6-month randomized controlled trial designed to enhance function. As demonstrated in recent research on spirituality and health, we expected that spiritual well-being would moderate the association between functional difficulty and anxiety as well as the relationship between functional difficulty and depression. …
