From Tears To Tiers: Mental Health & Pbis In Schools, Jason W. Byars, Kelly Petaccio

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Students living with a mental illness are more likely to drop out of school, enter the juvenile justice system, and die by suicide. In light of recent national tragedies in schools there is a sense of urgency to develop policies and procedures for the early detection of students living with a mental illness. School systems throughout the nation are incorporating Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) into their educational network in order to improve school climate. Within the framework of PBIS are tiered behavioral supports to address the needs of students, regardless of their emotional wellness. Layering the efforts of …

Unpacking Mooc Scholarly Discourse: A Review Of Nascent Mooc Scholarship, Maureen Ebben, Julien Murphy

Maureen Ebben

The rapid rise of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) signals a shift in the ways in which digital teaching and learning are engaged in and understood. Drawing upon a comprehensive search of nine leading academic databases, this paper examines the initial phase of MOOC scholarship (2009–2013), and offers an analysis of these empirical studies that conceptualizes themes in MOOC scholarship and locates them within a chronological framework. Two key phases of scholarship about MOOCs are identified, each with associated research imperatives and themes.

Addressing Microaggressions: Transgressing The Line Between Professional And Social Activism, Karla Scott, Victoria Defrancisco, Maureen Ebben

Maureen Ebben

The focus of this workshop is the often overlooked day-to-day wearing down of people in oppressed groups as recipients of microaggressions. While most who are sympathetic to this problem know what a microaggression is, faculty, staff and students tend to fear addressing such aggressions. They simply may not know how to do so effectively. In this hands-on workshop participants will grapple with specific scenarios and be invited to try out different communicative responses and other tools to work toward creating a more inclusive climate for all. The workshop comes from an intersectional feminist perspective, shinning a light on oppressive behaviors …

Helping Farmers By Helping Consumers Identify Local Food: The Case Of The Appalachian Grown Branding Program, Leah G. Mathews

ASA Annual Conference

As in much of Appalachia, the survival of farms in Western North Carolina is challenged by their small scale, market dynamics, and the uncertainties of historically important crops like tobacco and apples. Previous research identified the high demand for local products in the region as a promising market opportunity for farmers. To take advantage of this opportunity, the Appalachian Sustainable Agricultural Project developed the Appalachian Grown™ regional branding program to identify products from local farms and to protect the integrity of the local market. This study reports on experiments done in three grocery stores designed to develop and test effective …

Increasing Rural Tourism: A Demographic Profile Of Visitors To An Ohv Park In Rural Kentucky, Shaunna L. Scott, Michael J. Bradley, James Maples

ASA Annual Conference

As the foundation for their local economies continue to change, communities in rural eastern Kentucky continue to struggle economically. In efforts to help these rural communities recover, leadership and entrepreneurs have identified natural resources in eastern Kentucky as a footing by which to build a new economic structure related to outdoor recreation. As awareness of these areas continues to grow, many outdoor recreation resources and experiences are generating investment and recreation interest. In that outdoor recreation development is already in process in many places, those interested in facilitating these experiences have decisions to make regarding development and marketing. However, there …

Improving Retention And Reducing Isolation Via A Linked-Courses Learning Community, Amber Settle, Theresa Steinbach Sep 2016

Improving Retention And Reducing Isolation Via A Linked-Courses Learning Community, Amber Settle, Theresa Steinbach

Amber Settle

Despite a rebound in enrollments, men of color and women remain underrepresented in computing. The literature indicates that student-student interaction, affinity for the computing major, and reduced feelings of isolation are important for retention of underrepresented groups in computing. Learning communities connect students with each other and faculty to improve collaboration, interaction, and enthusiasm. In an effort to improve retention of female and minority students at our institution, we have created two cohorts of a linked-courses learning community for development majors. Here we report on the academic performance and retention for the first cohort and on the impact of the …

Creating Online Chaos: A Short Guide, Celeste Liddle Aug 2016

Creating Online Chaos: A Short Guide, Celeste Liddle

Journal of Global Indigeneity

Activist groups were among the first to recognise the potential of the internet as a tool to organise. Aboriginal people use social media at a significantly higher rate than everyone else, and this trend, though not as pronounced, also holds for feminist networks as well. This session is going to talk briefly about how Celeste Liddle came to use the internet as a tool for social change and draw on examples from her blog, union work and broader to highlight its capacity as an alternate communication tool in a media environment which is still very much dominated by the voices …

Join us, if you are afraid to integrate new technology into your classroom. The session will conclude with an open forum where the tech timid can ask …

Ability-Grouped College Math Students And Their Motivation To Succeed, Luralyn Helming, Amy Schweinle Aug 2016

Ability-Grouped College Math Students And Their Motivation To Succeed, Luralyn Helming, Amy Schweinle

School of Education Research Center

The authors studied how math anxiety, motivation, and ability group interact to affect performance in college math courses. They introduced the study of college students as ability grouped students. College students in the highest ability group were most likely to receive a satisfactory grade (70% and above) regardless of their level of motivation. For students in the average and low groups, the likelihood of receiving a satisfactory grade was a function of their motivation. As expected, students in the higher groups had more positive motivational patterns from the perspectives of expectancy-value theory and goal theory. Thus, college students experience ability …

Addressing Cultural Humility And Implicit Bias In Information Literacy Sessions, Twanna Hodge, Alfred Mowdood Jun 2016

Addressing Cultural Humility And Implicit Bias In Information Literacy Sessions, Twanna Hodge, Alfred Mowdood

Library Instruction West 2016

Learning cultural humility and bias-reducing strategies for those who work with diverse populations is critical for students and librarians. Our profession can play an important role in introducing these concepts and strategies. However, addressing implicit bias and cultural humility in information literacy classes can be difficult. Library staff may be unfamiliar with the concepts or uncertain about how to incorporate them into classes, have little control over class content, or have little time to address these topics. In this session, we describe how we incorporated concepts of cultural humility and implicit bias over five information literacy sessions per course in …

Re-Branding The American Marketing Association, Kasey Morgan May 2016

Re-Branding The American Marketing Association, Kasey Morgan

Innovate UNO

Two campaigns of advertising for the American Marketing Association were distributed to students to determine if creative or professional branding is more efficient in stimulating interest and involvement in the University of New Orleans' chapter of AMA. The American Marketing Association has been struggling with a low participation rate among students despite being a nationally-recognized organization that provides useful resources for students looking to further or start their careers. Our platform was to determine the best branding technique to expand membership. We tackled the management decision problem of deciding if we should implement an advertising campaign, and the marketing research …

This study was also interested in demonstrating …

Prevalence Of Sexual Harassment And Assault In Uri Stem Graduate Students, Ivy Burns, Holly Dunsworth May 2016

Prevalence Of Sexual Harassment And Assault In Uri Stem Graduate Students, Ivy Burns, Holly Dunsworth

Senior Honors Projects

There are many barriers for women in STEM careers (science, technology, engineering, and math); one, often untalked about, barrier is the prevalence of sexual harassment and assault. In the summer of 2014 the paper “Survey of Academic Field Experiences (SAFE): Trainees Report Harassment and Assault” by Clancy, et. al. was released and shed light on an issue facing many young women and men in science. According to the SAFE survey, a shocking amount of sexual harassment and assault was experienced by the, primarily female, researchers and very few knew how to report an incidence of assault. With this project I …

Relationships Between Social Media Exposure & Levels Of Body Dissatisfaction, Helen Nguyen, Andrea L. Paiva

Senior Honors Projects

The digital age has resulted in major technological inventions leading to great advances; however there are also clear costs. Television allows identical picture images to be broadcasted into millions of homes, the internet is a gateway to seemingly limitless information, and the cell phone is the ultimate connection device. Each of these communication modalities have spread the thinness ideal that is prevalent in Western societies, with the Internet being ridden with pro-eating disorder websites, cell phones providing handheld excess to peer- comparison, and all mediums presenting images of the thin body as ideal. The prevalence of eating disorders is still …

Reparations For Slavery In The United States, Alicia G. Kinsellagh Apr 2016

Reparations For Slavery In The United States, Alicia G. Kinsellagh

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

After the Civil War, freed slaves were promised “40 acres and a mule” to start new lives. This plan was opposed and following proposals for reparations have been opposed since. The majority of U.S. citizens believe that reparations are unnecessary because no living person is responsible for slavery, arguing that there is no “legacy of slavery.” However, others believe that African Americans today are still impacted by the vestiges of slavery. Thus, all U.S. citizens share responsibility for slavery’s legacy. This project explores the arguments for and against giving reparations to African Americans.

Keywords: reparations, “legacy of slavery,” collective responsibility

"Women On Women Aggression" Predictors Of A Belief In Double Standards, April D. Crabtree Apr 2016

"Women On Women Aggression" Predictors Of A Belief In Double Standards, April D. Crabtree

Scholars Week

"Woman on Woman Aggression": Predictors of Beliefs in Double Sex Standards

The presence of double standards is a topic that has been widely researched for the past several decades. Sexual double standards are based on the belief that sexual behaviors by women are viewed differently than when similar behaviors are exhibited by men. Early research stated that double standards were no longer much of an issue as seen in archival research by Crawford and Popp (2003). As they pulled research from previous decades, they concluded that double standards were not much of an issue in the 1970’s but resurfaced a …

Wesleyanism, Fundamentalism, And The Dones, Mature Christians Who Are Done With The Institutional Church: Two Book Reviews, Craighton Hippenhammer

Scholar Week 2016 - present

Book #1: "Square Peg: Why Wesleyans Aren't Fundamentalists," written by Nazarene and published by the Nazarene Publishing House. Book #2: "Church Refugees: Sociologists Reveal Why People Are DONE with Church but Not Their Faith," by Josh Packard and Ashleigh Hope, which tells why there are mature, highly educated Christians leaving the institutional church. The reasons why they are leaving are for the same four unexpected reasons. While these folks may not be large in numbers, they may be large in impact because they are doers and leaders at all levels of the church, so they may be leading the church …
