“Out of abundance, give to the poor.” Such was the Gospel precept of Italian Methodist minister, Rev. Antonio Arrighi in establishing the Anson Phelps Stokes Italian Free Library in 1894 in NYC. My talk will demonstrate the connection that existed between his Protestant missionary work and this immigrant library collection.

The library opened in July 1894 in a stately building on Mulberry Street. Housing more than 3,000 books and newspapers in both Italian and English, it was funded entirely by the wealthy donor’s wife, Helen Louisa Stokes. Both she and Arrighi desired to see such a library serving the Italian …

Malosma laurina (laurel sumac) is a dominant species in coastal chaparral ecosystems, extending its roots down to an average of 40 feet in rocky, sandy soils. The deep root systems of M. laurina provide structural support for the steep Santa Monica Mountains. The roots also allow M. laurina to draw from the deep water table, increasing its drought tolerance. M. laurina dieback is prevalent in coastal exposures of the Santa Monica Mountains presumably due to historic drought predisposing plant tissues to infection by the fungal pathogen Botryosphaeria dothidea. Throughout coastal exposures of the Santa Monica Mountains (SMM) there is a recent emergence of widespread dieback in Laurel Sumac (Malosma laurina). M. laurina is a keystone species of chaparral that dominates the SMM. A significant trait of M. laurina is an extensive root system exceeding 12 m in depth. We hypothesized that M. laurina was weakened by unprecedented drought in California (2013-2015) and predisposed to fungal pathogens. An initial study conducted in the summer of 2015 revealed all stem samples taken from dieback adult M. laurina plants were infected with Botryosphaeria dothidea, while zero stem samples taken …

Due to the recent drought in Southern California, the abundance of a keystone species within the Santa Monica Mountains (SMM) has been dwindling. This species, Malosma laurina, has an average root depth of 40 feet, so it has little difficulty tapping into the watershed. Recently, this species has undergone extensive dieback, which is potentially attributed to the unprecedented drought and the introduction of the fungus B. dothidea. Despite the ease of creation, the web is ephemeral. The fleeting nature of websites present a challenge to repositories when a record needs to be preserved. The Graduate Center Library was recently presented with this challenge with the increase of submissions of online components to dissertations. This presentation focused on the need to capture a snapshot, the limitations of current normative practices and some alternative approaches.

Roger McDonough became New Jersey State Librarian in 1947, the first professional librarian to fill that role and at the head of a newly amalgamated agency. He was a consummate politician. During his tenure he not only managed to get a new State Library built next to the State Capitol, but he worked hard to upgrade library services in New Jersey, to create networks of library cooperation, and to bring state aid up to par. Researchers are often asked to demonstrate their productivity and the impact of their research when they apply for funding, as well as when they go up for promotion and tenure. One of the ways they do this is by using traditional bibliometrics. Librarians, publishers, and institutions are other stakeholders with sometimes widely varying use cases for research impact metrics. Unfortunately, some traditional research impact metrics have been identified as barriers to open access initiatives, including Scholarship@Western.

The Santa Monica Mountains (SMM) represents one of five Mediterranean-type environments in the world. With sustained summer droughts, this ecosystem is prone to frequent wildfires, a phenomenon that has affected the SMM with regularity once every 32 years. Adenostoma fasciculatum (chamise), is a chaparral shrub well adapted to wildfire cycles because typically its seeds are triggered to germinate by high fire temperatures, smoke, and charate. In the winter of 2015, we were surprised to discover seedlings of A. fasiculatum emerging at an unburned chaparral site without the occurrence of fire. This presentation will focus on disproportionality in special education in Georgia over the last five years. We will describe what disproportionality is, how it is calculated, and the State Education Agency (SEA) and Local Education Agency (LEA) statutory requirements related to disproportionality determinations. In addition, disproportionality trend data over the last five years will be discussed. The presentation will also describe the initiatives that the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) is implementing to help reduce disproportionality across the state.

Kevin Tanner addresses the importance of professional identity in librarianship. In the Summer 2015 semester, he completed an independent study on the construction of professional identity of librarians on Twitter through professional development and networking. During this session, he shares the results of that study and give suggestions on how you can begin to find your own professional identity while still retaining your individuality. While there are many stereotypes about librarians, they are not “one-size-fits-all” professionals, and a new modern image of the professional has begun to emerge in the digital age through a thoughtful reflection on identity.

Electronic library content must be accessible to students with disabilities, however many institutions have focused on accessibility of physical facilities without considering the requirements for online information. Western Kentucky University (WKU) developed a required, automated program to audit WKU Libraries’ electronic content including, the website and library database vendors. Additionally, WKU began requesting documentation of accessibility features in the form of a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT). This presentation will focus on both our internal auditing efforts and the challenges of obtaining accurate vendor documentation.

Ad Astra’S Vasimr® Space Tug: A Cost-Efficient Low Earth Orbit Space Cleaner, Erik Seedhouse

This paper describes the mission architecture and advantages of the Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket (VASIMR)® propulsion technology to remove orbital debris from low Earth orbit (LEO) using a solar electric propulsion (SEP) space tug. Ad Astra has examined the capture and deorbiting of several items of orbital debris (Zenit rocket upper stages) orbiting in high inclination orbits. The mission concept presented here utilizes the 200 kW VASIMR® SEP space tug to lower the altitude of Zenit stages for a controlled deorbit over the Pacific Ocean. To achieve this, the tug is fitted with a mission-specific service module (SM) comprising …
