Through partnership with two BPS high schools, school counseling graduate students engage in service learning and participate in organized experiences that meet school needs and are coordinated with graduate students' learning goals. School counseling students meet with BPS students individually and through classroom interventions to assist in the college/career process and prepare them for post-secondary educational options. This session will describe the partnership, including direct experiences shared by graduate students.

Democracia, Familia Y Matrimonio, Ramiro De Valdivia Cano
Democracia, Familia Y Matrimonio, Ramiro De Valdivia Cano
Ramiro De Valdivia Cano

Learning To Give A Hoot: Open Access Workflows For Academic Librarians (Oawal), Jill Emery
Learning To Give A Hoot: Open Access Workflows For Academic Librarians (Oawal), Jill Emery
Jill Emery
Graham Stone and Jill Emery have been working to try to develop an outline of some of the best practices for managing open access workflow management in academic libraries. In March 2014, we went live with OAWAL (pronounced owl): a crowdsourced blog/wiki to develop some of these practices and learn what innovators and experts in the field of scholarly communications and open access management have been doing. Our project is international in scope and relies heavily on countries such as the UK where country mandates are driving the development of workflows and management tools. This presentation will focus on recent …

The Critical Role Of Cubesat Spacecraft In A Multi-Tier Mission For Mars Exploration, Jeremy Straub
The Critical Role Of Cubesat Spacecraft In A Multi-Tier Mission For Mars Exploration, Jeremy Straub
Jeremy Straub
A multi-tier architecture is under development (with similar craft heterogeneity to Fink's work on ‘tier scalable’ missions) which will facilitate autonomous local control of multiple heterogeneous craft. This mission architecture has been developed with a Mars mission in mind and has included CubeSats in a variety of critical mission roles.
Two concepts will be presented: the addition of CubeSats to a larger-scale multi-tier mission, where the CubeSats serve a supporting role and a mission driven by CubeSat orbital capabilities. In the first, CubeSats are utilized to augment the area of spatial coverage that can be obtained and the temporal coverage …

Critical Transitions In Faculty Learning: Helping Faculty Become Learning-Centered Teachers, Judith Longfield
Critical Transitions In Faculty Learning: Helping Faculty Become Learning-Centered Teachers, Judith Longfield
Judith Longfield
New methodologies of teaching and learning are changing the landscape of higher education. However, faculty are often unaware of the research and continue to rely heavily on lecture. During this interactive session, participants will learn how an extended series, known as the Teaching Academy, transformed instructors’ ideas about effective teaching and their classroom practices. In addition to learning about the impact of the Academy, participants will also consider ways to overcome barriers and implement this type of in-depth faculty development, which did not require additional funding, on their campuses.
Using Perceptual Maps For Career And College Counseling, Oscar T. Mcknight, Kerri Carmichael, Gregory Pollock
Using Perceptual Maps For Career And College Counseling, Oscar T. Mcknight, Kerri Carmichael, Gregory Pollock
Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.
Perceptual mapping is a modeling technique used in business to visually display relationships and perceptions of customers. In business, perceptual maps are often called product positioning maps. Conceptually, perceptual maps foster a better and deeper understanding of products and services in terms of public perception or actual outcomes. In short, marketers attempt to position products, product line, and brand or company type relative to their competition or competency. For counselors, this process facilitates open and honest discussion relative to personal expectations and goals. This presentation reviews how to interpret and use a Perceptual Map given a multiple variable (axis) system; …

Did I Sign My Rights Away? Copyright For Authors, Janelle L. Wertzberger
Did I Sign My Rights Away? Copyright For Authors, Janelle L. Wertzberger
Janelle Wertzberger
Most authors sign publication contracts without reading them carefully, and consequently transfer all rights to a publisher. Is there another option? (Yes, there is!)
Join us for Did I sign my rights away? Copyright for authors on Wednesday, 10/22/14, at noon (Specialty Dining Room 19).
This session will explain copyright for authors in plain English. Hear successful strategies used by academic authors, review a typical publication contract, and learn about tools that can help you retain the rights you wish to keep while continuing to work with scholarly publishers. If you like, bring a recent publication contract that you signed. …
Challenges Associated With Space Weather Analysis And Prediction, John Lanicci
Challenges Associated With Space Weather Analysis And Prediction, John Lanicci
John M Lanicci
The term “space weather” is typically used to describe environmental conditions in the region extending from the sun’s surface, through the interplanetary medium, to the earth’s magnetic field and upper atmosphere, with a focus on those conditions that can affect the earth, its technological systems, and population. Space weather conditions are monitored continuously by a number of agencies around the world. These agencies use both satellite- and ground-based measurements to build analyses and employ predictive models that form the basis for impacts-based products dealing with myriad users in satellite operations, the utility industry, aviation, and satellite-based communications, to name a …
