The Prescribed West, Evan M. Hauser

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

The impact land has on the human experience goes beyond aesthetic beauty and resources; it constructs cultural and societal ideals in varying regions. My interest is within the relationship between man and land. Seeing the cultural shift in perspective of land, as I moved residence from Indiana to Montana, heightened my awareness of the differences with land across regions. Decisions made with land, such as what is private and what is public, are the starting point of my research.

When looking at a National Park such as Yellowstone, we are confronted by land that is supposedly wild and natural. In …

While exploring varying concussion policies and research, this professional paper recognizes each of these essential aspects and incorporates them into the final Concussion Policy by the YMCA of Missoula.

Examining The Relationship Between Different Pitching Mechanics And Throwing Injuries, Zachary M. Mccarthy Apr 2017

Examining The Relationship Between Different Pitching Mechanics And Throwing Injuries, Zachary M. Mccarthy

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Throwing injuries in baseball are increasing amongst major league baseball pitchers. Injuries to the shoulder complex and elbow ligamentous structures are increasing. Variables including pitch count, pitch type, throwing style, and duration of the game have all been “linked” to potential injury. Noticing the realtionship between these variables and injuries can lead to an upward trend in the decrease of throwing injuries.

"I Want An Authenticity" : Developing Communicative Competence Of Defense Critical Language With Audio And Article News, Wuri Prima Kusumastuti

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Defense critical language learner generally focus on communicative competence instead of linguistics competence due to their responsibility of collaborating with native speaker to solve a problem in the target country. Thus, it is expected for military people to be able to not only speak the language but also understanding the culture and values in target country to avoid misunderstanding between both party. However, they usually have limited time to attend the language class due to the urgency of their job. Thus, we believe that it is important to start emerging both language and culture since the very beginning of their …

Using Biomimicry To Enhance Urea Catalysts, Nicholas Wageling Apr 2017

Using Biomimicry To Enhance Urea Catalysts, Nicholas Wageling

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

In organic chemistry, catalysis (speeding up a chemical reaction) has largely been dominated by Lewis and Brønsted acids. While effective, these additives are also usually toxic, reactive, and environmentally unfriendly. Organocatalysts provide an alternative way to increase reaction rates. By appending hydrogen bond donors to a carbon scaffold, organocatalysts can have activity similar to Lewis and Brønsted acids without the negative side effects. Consequently, the field of organocatalysis has been steadily growing for the last twenty years. Chemists can increase preferable traits in their catalyst such as enantioselectivity, solubility, and activity by modifying. These are laudable goals for catalysis research, …

An Outlay Equivalence Analysis Of South African Households, Samuel Peevey Apr 2017

An Outlay Equivalence Analysis Of South African Households, Samuel Peevey

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

An overwhelming amount of research (Saha 2013 Kingdon 2005 Parpiev et. al. 2012 and Gibson and Rozelle 2004) supports that gender inequality persists in the developing world. In addition, a considerable amount of evidence also suggests that gender inequality in the developing world negatively impacts women and girls’ health, education and future wage potential (Baliamoune-Lutz et. al. 2009 Garg et. al. 1998 Agbodji et. al. 2013 and Dickerson et. al. 2013). This thesis investigates whether households in South Africa discriminated against their female children, in favor of their male children. Additionally, I investigated whether a head of household’s gender significantly …

Shifting Demographics In Swan Valley, Montana, Jedd Sankar-Gorton Apr 2017

Shifting Demographics In Swan Valley, Montana, Jedd Sankar-Gorton

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

In Swan Valley, Montana, there is a significant shift in demographics going on. A once strong resource extraction based economy shifted to a service, education, and construction based economy in the last 30 years. Real estate values and median age have increased significantly. A divide exists between groups perceived as the more educated newcomers and the longtime residents who feel their autonomy is shrinking. One of the many trends associated with this is amenity migration, which is the movement of people in pursuit of cultural and natural amenities. This trend and others associated with the demographic shift can have both …

Exclusion Breeds Innovation: Empowering Refugees In Greece Through App Technology Training, Laine D. Bonstein Apr 2017

Exclusion Breeds Innovation: Empowering Refugees In Greece Through App Technology Training, Laine D. Bonstein

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Greece has experienced an influx of nearly 100,000 refugees over the past five years, all during a time when the Greek economy lost tremendous stability and the sanctions on refugees seeking asylum throughout the European Union became more rigid. Overpopulation within the archipelago has strained general resources, created a bureaucratic backlog in asylum application processing and brought a complete arrest to the function, development and livelihood of those inhabiting refugee camps. This project intends to provide an opportunity for the inert population by empowering youth. Developing tools in technology, specifically an app, would be a mobile opportunity to prepare the …

A Clino-Cladistic Look At Pull & Push Tabs Ca. 1950-1980, William D. Schroeder Ms, Rpa

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Pull tabs revolutionized the way beverage cans and food containers were opened and their contents removed. Ermal Fraze is credited with this, yet he was not alone in the invention nor was he technically the first. Until recently, pull tabs were not considered diagnostic in Historical Archaeology because they had not yet met the 50-year-old threshold. As of 2015, ring pull tabs entered the historic era, yet relatively little is known about these artifacts. In order to place these artifacts in terminus ante and post quem timeframes for historical archaeologists who have located and will more frequently encounter these items …

Taking A Bite Out Of Unwanted Data In The Animal Bite Syndrome, Erika Baldry, Tracy Miller, Jill Baber

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Introduction. North Dakota collects syndromic surveillance data, de-identified reason-for-visit data, for all visits to participating emergency departments (EDs), walk in clinics, and ambulatory clinics throughout the state. Syndromic data is submitted daily and automatically through an electronic connection between health care providers and the state. Animal bites are not required to be specifically reported to the North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) by providers; however, NDDoH has utilized North Dakota’s syndromic surveillance program, BioSense 2.0, for routine surveillance by using an existing animal bites syndrome. We sought to evaluate the existing BioSense 2.0 animal bites syndrome and explore how the …

Reviewing The Use Of Physical Diagnostic Testing Methods And Detection Of Meniscal Tears, Heather Bartz

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

REVIEWING THE USE OF PHYSICAL DIAGNOSTIC TESTING METHODS AND DETECTION OF MENISCAL TEARS

Meniscal tears are the most common orthopedic pathology of the knee and the most common indication for knee surgery for the adult population. The meniscus is a cartilaginous structure in the knee joint that functions to absorb forces in the knee and provide stability, lubrication, and congruity to the joint. Physical diagnostic testing is used to confirm diagnosis in the clinical evaluation of this injury, but many of the known physical diagnostic tests have low sensitivity and specificity when performed alone. There is substantial need for reliable …

Transforming Patagonia: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Patagonia National Park, Elena Louder Apr 2017

Transforming Patagonia: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Patagonia National Park, Elena Louder

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

In recent years, critical geographers have examined how neoliberalism, or political economic ideology oriented to promote private property rights, maximize entrepreneurial freedom, and ensure free trade and unencumbered markets, has become increasingly intertwined with efforts to conserve biodiversity. One expression of the rise of neoliberal conservation is the development of privately protected areas (PPAs), or pieces of land purchased by wealthy individuals via the market for the purposes of conservation. Although literature on this topic is theoretically rich, empirical examinations of this type of conservation are few.

Due to its long and institutionalized engagement with neoliberalism since the 1970s, Chile …

The Working Alliance In Collegiate Athletic Training: Navigating Patient Care, Jessica Moore

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Purpose: As healthcare evolves to consider the psychosocial effects of injury and disease on patient well-being, attention has turned to the impact of the patient-provider relationship. One foundational construct, the working alliance, emphasizes an emotional bond, agreement on goals, and collaboration on tasks between patient and provider. Despite emphasis on a working alliance in healthcare research, a conceptual understanding of the components of the athletic trainer-patient relationship in athletic training remains largely unexplored. The purpose of this research was to learn how athletic trainers develop and utilize the working alliance with patients.

Methods: This was a grounded theory …

Attempting Physical Contact With Geologic Time, Anne Yoncha, Gerard Sapes Apr 2017

Attempting Physical Contact With Geologic Time, Anne Yoncha, Gerard Sapes

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Science and the arts have long been understood as two opposing systems of thought involving logic and emotion. However, both disciplines rely on similar thought processes to create something new. Thus, thinking of science and the arts as counterparts is not only false but also eliminates the potential for interaction and generation of powerful outreach tools which use both logic and emotion.

Attempting Physical Contact with Geologic Time examines the cellular structure of plant stems as they transport water and how that structure is affected by drought stress, one of the main drivers of forest die-off worldwide. Under drought, plant …
