Symposium of Student Scholars
Health Family Support Centers in South Korea play a pivotal role in promoting multilingualism and multiculturalism in South Korea that practices Korean-only assimilation policies. With an increased influx of multicultural immigrants, these centers provide assistance and services to immigrants. These centers also serve as a hub for both immigrants who have gained proficiency in the Korean language and culture also work there as bilingual coaches and translators, and dedicated Koreans fostering cultural harmony. Thus, it is crucial to examine experiences and perspectives of employees striving for immigrant equity in South Korea at these centers.
This study explores the perspectives and …
Low-Cost Shortwave-Infrared Spectroscopy (Swirs) For Stroke Risk Screening In Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease, Katie Cho
Symposium of Student Scholars
Sickle cell disease (SCD) has a profound effect on the brain. In sub-Saharan Africa where most SCD patients (~75%) live and access to medical care is limited, ~11% of SCD children will develop a stroke by the age of 20. Although early identification is critical to treatment, transcranial doppler ultrasound (TCD), the standard screening tool, is not widely available in low-resource settings due to its high cost and need of trained personnel. Speckle contrast optical spectroscopy (SCOS) may provide a user-friendly and cost-effective solution to this unmet need. SCOS is an emerging optical technique that can quantify blood flow in …

Using a hand collected sample of annual corporate ESG reports, I propose to study the link between CEO compensation and ESG performance and its implications for firm performance. Using stakeholder theory, I propose that companies that link CEO pay with ESG outcomes would perform better in the stock market. This is conditional on other variables, such as diversity of the board and ESG report status.
The Role Of Sense Of Purpose In Health Navigation Among Marginalized Older Adults, Ameesha Narine
The Role Of Sense Of Purpose In Health Navigation Among Marginalized Older Adults, Ameesha Narine
Symposium of Student Scholars
A sense of purpose is a central, self-organizing life aim that guides choices and behaviors (Lewis, 2020; Mcknight & Kashdan 2009). In older adulthood, having a sense of purpose is linked with positive health (Musich et al., 2018; Lewis & Hill, 2021). Understanding how older adults who identify as socially marginalized (e.g., racially/ ethnically diverse, LGBTQ+) leverage purpose to navigate their health, for example, when setting health values, making health decisions, or adapting to health challenges may support the development of tailored resources to combat social disparities embedded in healthcare systems. This study used qualitative thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, …

River cross-sections are often extracted using field surveys at measured intervals. This field-oriented approach allows for a tangible relationship between the data and its collector but at the expense of finance, time, labor, and potentially the environment. With the advancement of geospatial tools, such data can be found online, extracted, and even analyzed with contemporary Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in a completely virtual setting, transcending the need for fieldwork in select project topics. We tested this approach with the help of ArcGIS Pro software on the Vishnu Springs headwater stream located in the Western Illinois region of the Upper Mississippi …

The Classification Of Internet Memes Through Supervised And Unsupervised Machine Learning Algorithms, William H. Little
Symposium of Student Scholars
Memes, those captivating internet phenomena, effortlessly deliver online entertainment. By leveraging time-series data from Google Trends, we can vividly illustrate and dissect the dynamic trends in meme popularity. Previous studies have discerned four distinct post-peak popularity patterns— "smoothly decaying," "spikey decaying," "leveling off," and "long-term growth"—and elegantly modeled these using ordinary differential equations.
This research introduces a programmatic approach that harnesses both supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms. The dataset, now expanded to over 2000 elements, becomes the canvas for exploration. The K-means algorithm identifies clusters, which then serve as labels for the supervised SVC algorithm. The overarching goal is …

Under The Wig: A Critique On The Usage Of Boy Actors In The Renaissance, Christopher Nastasi
Under The Wig: A Critique On The Usage Of Boy Actors In The Renaissance, Christopher Nastasi
Symposium of Student Scholars
This paper examines the treatment of boy actors in the Renaissance between the years 1300-1600. With very little primary source material due to the low literacy rate in the Renaissance era, analyzing court records is the primary way of understanding how theatre companies and society harmfully treated the boy actors. One of the many issues the boy actors faced, was their perception from the audience. This study analyzes through a materialistic lens, how the audience treated the boy actors. By using this Marxist approach, focusing on the role of labor, the study dives deeper into the direct physical abuses the …
Distraction Culture: The Origin Story Of Notification Stress, Benedicte Kalonda
Distraction Culture: The Origin Story Of Notification Stress, Benedicte Kalonda
Symposium of Student Scholars
Long gone are the days when procrastination was the sole culprit of poor productivity through the chronic delay of task completion, which has also been linked to a range of stress-related health problems (e.g., headaches, digestive issues, and insomnia). Today’s culture has given rise to the phenomenon of pre-crastination, whereby a technological notification demands and receives immediate attention despite its level of urgency. This propensity to abandon flow and groove is becoming normalized, and the public health impact is currently unknown.
These notifications, a seemingly benign cost of technological advances, are setting the stage for a new level of stressor …

Gis For Public Health: Exploring Diseases Of Despair In Metro Atlanta, Chanice Brown
Gis For Public Health: Exploring Diseases Of Despair In Metro Atlanta, Chanice Brown
Symposium of Student Scholars
Diseases of despair are a set of behaviors that can cause a significant amount of mortality within a population. These behaviors, which typically include drug abuse, alcoholism, and suicides, have existed for quite some time. However, the idea of “Diseases of Despair” is fairly recent. In 2015, researchers Anna Case and Angus Deaton first coined the concept while studying an increase in mortality and decrease in life expectancy amongst middle-aged, white populations in different rural communities. They theorized that external pressures, like economic insecurity and increased morbidity, were driving these populations to seek out dangerous methods to relieve their stress. …

Symposium of Student Scholars
4,4-Difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacenes (BODIPYs) represent one of the most prominent classes of dyes, since they are ubiquitously used in protein and DNA labelling, photodynamic therapies, as luminescent tags, sensors, laser dyes, paint and ink compositions, as well as for electroluminescent devices. [1] This is because of their robustness in terms of photochemical stability, polarity and pH changes of their environment, in particular under physiological conditions. The versatility to introduce multiple functional substituents and ability of BODIPYs to strongly absorb UV-light while providing sharp fluorescence peaks, combined with high quantum yields make these dyes highly attractive for numerous applications. Closely related azaBODIPYs offer …

With exponential technological advances, hospitals are tasked with prioritizing which expensive innovations truly impact as many patients as possible to give them the greatest chance of recovering and discharge them earlier. It is no surprise that most of the attention is focussed on pharmaceutical drugs and a variety of different equipment and machinery, but hospital facilities should look into simpler additions that can aid every patient admitted. The use of naturalistic blue-wavelength lighting is something that can benefit each patient’s recovery immensely. Multiple studies have proven positive effects that blue-depleted lighting compared to standard indoor fluorescent lighting has lowered stress …
Pressure Injury Bundles Vs Routine Pressure Injury Care, Which Will Reduce More Pressure?, Kristina Bennett
Pressure Injury Bundles Vs Routine Pressure Injury Care, Which Will Reduce More Pressure?, Kristina Bennett
Symposium of Student Scholars
Pressure injuries are one of the most major challenges confronted in hospitals today – which can compromise a patient’s well-being, extend a patient's hospital admission, and can potentially contribute to disability or mortality. The prevention of pressure injuries is significant in delivering high-quality healthcare to patients; however, the prevention plan for pressure injury applications has been suboptimal as it causes a delay in medication delivery for nurses. The forms of care that are often used by healthcare professionals to improve HAPIs (hospital-acquired pressure injuries) are pressure preventative bundles – which are a set of evidence-based practices that are implemented reliably …
The Mediation Basic Psychological Needs Has On Leaderships Styles And Outcomes, Eric Zhu
The Mediation Basic Psychological Needs Has On Leaderships Styles And Outcomes, Eric Zhu
Symposium of Student Scholars
There has been a focus on which leadership styles relate to certain outcomes, such as burnout, organizational commitment, and positive/negative affect. It appear that what predicts whether or not a person feels positively or negatively about their organization and how much burnout they experience is not predicted by leadership styles in and of itself, but rather how the leadership style satisfies or frustrates basic psychological needs. Although organizational commitment does not seem to be predicted by basic psychological needs solely and that leadership style does play a significant, if secondary, role in its prediction, I believe that to be due …

Understanding Humanity: Demarginalizing The Intersection Of Black Masculinity And Feminity For The Psyche, Kandice Fowlkes
Symposium of Student Scholars
As the intersection of race and gender is a feat for the strong Black man and strong Black woman, the double edged sword is the deterioration of mental health overlooked by the need to maintain the guise of perfection. The social disadvantages of this intersection include a myriad of traumas such as financial stability, violence and oppression, and the internal stigma of judgment, which causes Black men and Women to delay or go undiagnosed for mental health disorders. In turn, this enables an unstable community to unite for mental health reform. Aside from seeking medical help, the conversation of mental …

Corrosion Prevention Of Aluminum Alloy, Andrea Brenner
Corrosion Prevention Of Aluminum Alloy, Andrea Brenner
Symposium of Student Scholars
Aluminum alloy (Al-alloy) is a widely used metal in construction, aerospace, aviation, and other necessary fields due to its lightweight and tweakable properties. However, corrosion is inevitable on metals and alloys, and that causes millions of dollars of revenue loss every year. Therefore, we propose to research fabricating coating to prevent corrosion on Al-alloy. This study uses an iron-based metal-organic framework (MOF) and polyurethane (PU) based composite coating to prevent corrosion on the Al-alloy. The makeup of the composite material is changed by varying the percentage of MOF. In addition, a binder is also used to enhance the homogenization between …

Pilot Study Exploring The Impact That Laboratory Instruction Has On A Student's Stem Professional Identity , Datiel Dayani, Dr. Michelle Head
Symposium of Student Scholars
STEM professional identity serves as one lens through which researchers have used to study factors that influence achievement in chemistry courses and persistence in a STEM major. The literature has proposed that the high attrition rate among STEM majors may result from the student’s evolving professional identity, motivational factors, and how they correlate a STEM career to their future aspirations. There is limited insight into how laboratory classes and teaching practices affect a student’s professional identity development. To investigate this, this study employed James Marcia’s identity development theory to understand the relationship between a student's identity status and their perception …
