Publications and Research

Background: The American College Health Association found that over 30% of students reported difficulty in functioning due to feeling depressed, overwhelming anxiety (50%) and anger (36%). Suicide is the second leading cause of death among US adolescents and over half of mental illnesses emerge prior to adulthood. A similar study found that nearly half of student veterans met criteria for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and 46% had suicidal ideation. Left untreated, mental illness can lead to increased absenteeism, lower academic performance, disrupted classroom behaviors and compromises school safety. Educators and students are well positioned to identify and refer students in …

Background: The effects of vitamin D supplementation on mild hepatic dysfunction and glycemic control are unclear in children and adolescents with either type 1 (T1D) or type 2 diabetes (T2D). Hypothesis: Vitamin D supplementation will improve hepatic dysfunction and glycemic control. Aim: To determine the effect of vitamin D supplementation on alanine transaminase (ALT), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration. Subjects and Methods: A retrospective study of 131 subjects with either T1D (n=88: 46 females, 42 males), or T2D ( n=43: 26 females, 17 males) of ages 3-18 years between 2007-2013. Environmental Conservation Datasets

The rapid growth and increasing popularity of smartphone technology is putting sophisticated data-collection tools in the hands of more and more citizens. This has exciting implications for the expanding field of citizen science. With smartphone-based applications (apps), it is now increasingly practical to remotely acquire high quality citizen-submitted data at a fraction of the cost of a traditional study. Yet, one impediment to citizen science projects is the question of how to train participants. The traditional “in-person” training model, while effective, can be cost prohibitive as the spatial scale of a project increases. To explore possible solutions, we analyze three …

This spreadsheet and associated tables provides the total fuel usage and associated emissions for the UMass Amherst campus including electricity consumption for all UMass Amherst owned properties between FY2002-2013. Tab 2 provides the calculated Energy Use Intensity (EUI). Tabs 3 & 4 provide the raw GHG and kbtu energy data for the campus. Tab 5 provides the emissions factors and weather normalization factors used by the MA DOER to correctly calculate annual emissions.
