Concise Review: Dendritic Cell Development In The Context Of The Spleen Microenvironment, Jonathan Tan, Helen O'Neill
Concise Review: Dendritic Cell Development In The Context Of The Spleen Microenvironment, Jonathan Tan, Helen O'Neill
Jonathan Tan
The dendritic cell (DC) population in spleen comprises a mixture of cells including endogenous DC progenitors, DC precursors migrating in from blood and bone marrow, and DC in different states of differentiation and activation. A role for different microenvironments in supporting the dynamic development of murine DC of different types or lineages is considered here. Recent evidence for production of DC dependent on splenic stromal cells is reviewed in the light of evidence that cell production is dependent on cells comprising an endothelial niche in spleen. The possibility that self-renewing progenitors in spleen give rise to DC with tolerogenic or …

Institutionalization Of Software Product Line: An Empirical Investigation Of Key Organizational Factors, Faheem Ahmed, Luiz Capretz, Shahbaz Sheikh
Luiz Fernando Capretz
A good fit between the person and the organization is essential in a better organizational performance. This is even more crucial in case of institutionalization of a software product line practice within an organization. Employees’ participation, organizational behavior and management contemplation play a vital role in successfully institutionalizing software product lines in a company. Organizational dimension has been weighted as one of the critical dimensions in software product line theory and practice. A comprehensive empirical investigation to study the impact of some organizational factors on the performance of software product line practice is presented in this work. This is the …

Alcohol And Environmental Justice: The Density Of Liquor Stores And Bars In Urban Neighborhoods In The United States, John Romley, Deborah Cohen, Jeanne Ringel, Roland Sturm
Roland Sturm
Objective: This study had two purposes: (1) to characterize the density of liquor stores and bars that individuals face according to race, economic status, and age in the urban United States and (2) to assess alternative measures of retailer density based on the road network and population. Method: We used census data on business counts and sociodemographic characteristics to compute the densities facing individuals in 9,361 urban zip codes. Results: Blacks face higher densities of liquor stores than do whites. The density of liquor stores is greater among nonwhites in lower-income areas than among whites in lower- and higher-income areas …

Factors Affecting The Impact Of Teacher Education Programmes On Teacher Preparedness : Implications For Accreditation Policy, Lawrence Ingvarson, Adrian Beavis, Elizabeth Kleinhenz
Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz
This study provides guidance to policy-makers about the standards that might be appropriate for accrediting teacher education programs. The study was commissioned by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), a statutory body established in 2001 by the Victorian state government with responsibility for the registration (licensing) of teachers and the accreditation of teacher education programs. The study investigated the characteristics of effective initial teacher education programs, as reported by teachers who have just finished their first year of teaching. A survey instrument was distributed in 2004 to all registered teachers who had graduated from their teacher education program in 2002, …

Different Steps : Post-School Pathways For Australian Students, Jennifer Bryce, Michelle Anderson
Different Steps : Post-School Pathways For Australian Students, Jennifer Bryce, Michelle Anderson
Dr Jennifer Bryce
New research investigates students' often non-linear post-school transitions. A new report, 'Australian Stories: Young People, Their Families and Post-School Plans', builds on research undertaken by the Australian Council for Educational Research for the Smith Family. It examines the stories of nine young people who have participated in the Smith Family Learning for Life scholarship program and who are considered to have made a positive start towards achieving their post-school goals. By asking these young people questions about their decision-making, the barriers they faced, and strategies for overcoming these, the study suggests ways that young people in similar situations may be …

Angular Momentum In Human Walking, Marko Popovic, Hugh Herr
Angular Momentum In Human Walking, Marko Popovic, Hugh Herr
Marko B. Popovic
Angular momentum is a conserved physical quantity for isolated systems where no external moments act about a bodyʼs center of mass (CM). However, in the case of legged locomotion, where the body interacts with the environment (ground reaction forces), there is no a priori reason for this relationship to hold. A key hypothesis in this paper is that angular momentum is highly regulated throughout the walking cycle about all three spatial directions [ (t) ≈0], and therefore horizontal ground reaction forces and the center of pressure trajectory can be explained predominantly through an analysis that assumes zero net moment about …

Interprofessional Information Work: Innovations In The Use Of The Chart On Internal Medicine Teams, Lorelei Lingard, Lesley Conn, Ann Russell, Scott Reeves, Karen-Lee Miller, Chris Kenaszchuk, Merrick Zwarenstein
Lorelei Lingard
An abundance of evidence suggests that communication in interprofessional healthcare teams is a complex endeavour. Even relatively simple communication processes involving information work - the gathering, storage, retrieval and discussion of patient information - may be fraught with pitfalls, and yet teams manage to conduct their daily information work, often with a high degree of effectiveness. In this article, we explore one commonplace dimension of information work - the use of patient charts to foster collaborative decision-making and care enactment - towards building an elaborated understanding of how teams innovate in the face of daily complexities in their information work …

Making Instructional Decisions Based On Data: What, How, And Why, Catherine Rosemary, Kouider Mokhtari, Patricia Edwards
Catherine A. Rosemary
The article offers information on the Data Analysis Framework for Instructional Decision Making. It is a student assessment tool that consists of guiding questions to assist school literacy team members in analyzing data, discussing the patterns and relationships within those data, and constructing interpretations that they can then translate into goals and action steps to improve reading and writing achievement. The three major categories of data that are considered for improving reading and writing instruction are reading performance data, professional development data, and classroom data.

Validity Of Two Selected-Item Short Forms Of The Wais-Iii In An Intellectually Deficient Sample, Ryan Allen, Pamala Alley, Patrick Leverett
Validity Of Two Selected-Item Short Forms Of The Wais-Iii In An Intellectually Deficient Sample, Ryan Allen, Pamala Alley, Patrick Leverett
Ryan A. Allen
Various short forms of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale–Third Edition (WAIS-III; D. Wechsler, 1997) have been investigated, but limited information is available regarding the usefulness of any WAIS-III abbreviation with intellectually deficient individuals. Our study compared the validities of two WAIS-III selected-item short forms in a sample of 59 individuals with full scale IQs (FSIQs) of 79 or lower. The performance of both short forms was adequate, but the results gave a consistent edge to an adapted version of the Satz–Mogel (1962) short form in comparison to the abbreviated form by J. H. Wymer, K. Rayls, and M. T. Wagner …

Perceived Advantages And Disadvantages Of An Online Charter School, Lisa Shoaf
Lisa M. Shoaf
A study examined customer satisfaction with an online charter school and compared the performance of this online charter school with a similar school as well as the overall state average. Findings revealed that overall, the constituents involved in the online charter school were satisfied with the school's educational service and, although students at the charter school performed lower than the state average of all schools, they performed better when compared to a similar school as defined by the state board of education.

The Suitability Of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction For Chronic Hepatitis C, Lynn Koerbel, Donna Zucker
The Suitability Of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction For Chronic Hepatitis C, Lynn Koerbel, Donna Zucker
Donna M. Zucker
As incidence of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) in the United States increases, management of physical and psychological symptoms over the long term becomes crucial. Research has shown meditation to be a valuable tool in reducing such symptoms for various chronic illnesses. In particular, the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program offers curriculum that has been show to influence both physiology and perception of disease states. Although there has been not direct research to date on the effectiveness of the MBSR program for CHC, several studies have shown significant findings affecting other chronic conditions including heart disease, fibromyalgia and HIV. The purpose …

Swahili Expressive Arts Digital Media Collection, Rebecca Gearhart
Rebecca Gearhart
The Swahili Expressive Arts collection represents the research and scholarship of Professor Rebecca Gearhart, Ph.D., Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Illinois Wesleyan University. Professor Gearhart has worked with members of the community of Lamu, Kenya for twenty years, and in this collection she has selected images that represent aspects of Swahili ceremonial life on the northern coast of Kenya. The Swahili Expressive Arts collection is meant to be a possible starting point for student and scholar research on some of the Sufi-inspired practices that contemporary Swahili communities in the Lamu archipelago and adjacent mainland carry on into the present.
