Mapping Educational Research And Its Impact On Australian Schools, John Ainley, Allyson Holbrook, Sid Bourke, John Owen, Phil Mckenzie, Sebastian Misson, Trevor Johnson
Dr John Ainley
This report provides an analysis of educational research and its impact on Australian schools. It has a particular focus on research done by academic staff and postgraduate students in university faculties of education, since around 90 percent of the resources involved in Australian educational research are located in those faculties. Within the total research endeavour the report concentrates on research concerned with Australian schools and schooling. The report developed an analytical framework drawn from the literature concerned with knowledge utilisation. The report has provided the most comprehensive mapping yet undertaken of the educational research that was underway in Australia in …

School Governance : Research On Educational And Management Issues, John Ainley, Phil Mckenzie
Dr John Ainley
In a number of countries the past 20 years have seen increases decentralisation of authority for a range of decisions to individual schools. A range of arguments has been advanced in support of decentralisation but a common belief is that shifting authority to schools will enhance the quality, effectiveness and responsiveness of public education. This paper argues decentralisation is not a unitary concept and can be applied to different elements of the teaching and learning environment: curriculum organisation, financial management, personnel management and resource allocation. Research that has investigated the impact of decentralisation itself on student learning outcomes has not …

At the beginning of 2000 the principal and staff of St Catherine's, Moorabbin, Victoria, instituted an additional assistance mathematics program within their school to support those children identified as being at risk in the early years. Children in Grade 1 and Grade 2 were the focus for withdrawal and support and were offered three sessions a week withdrawal and some whole class skills activity sessions for the year. Classroom needs was the focus for Grade 3 and children who were specifically targeted in relation to place value and the laws of mathematics received one session per week withdrawal for two …

Background: Neuroendocrine/Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) of the skin is an uncommon tumour. Currently, there are only limited data available on the natural history, prognostic factors, and patient management of MCC. Objective: To review our experience and build the largest database from the literature. Methods: Twenty-eight cases from the London Regional Cancer Center were combined with 633 cases obtained from the literature searched in English, French, German, and Chinese for the years 1966 to 1998. The database included age, sex, initial disease status at presentation to the clinic, site of primary, any coexisting disease, any previous irradiation, sizes of primary/nodal/distant metas-tases, …

In contrast to attempts that have been made to measure the clarity of reporting of the methods of clinical trials in journal articles, we report here an attempt to measure the accuracy of methods reporting. We focus in this article on eligibility criteria as a test case for the reporting of clinical trial methods. We examined the reporting of eligibility criteria in the protocol, methods paper (if applicable), journal article, and Clinical Alert for articles appearing in print between January 1988 and September 1994 for which a Clinical Alert had been issued. Eligibility criteria were further classified into five categories …

The advent of the Internet and the use of the World Wide Web (www) have changed the ways people and organizations disseminate information, broadened the means by which industries worldwide deliver services and, in so doing, shortened the distance between members of the global community. These developments have also provided implications and opportunities for the establishment and maintenance of mutually beneficial online alliances worldwide. EdNA Online - an online manifestation of the networked education community in Australia (hence the acronym EdNA for Education Network Australia) - plans to be in a position to capitalise on these national and international strategic …

Protecting Communities In Biomedical Research, Charles Weijer, E. Emanuel

Although for the last 50 years, ethicists dealing with human experimentation have focused primarily on the need to protect individual research subjects and vulnerable groups, biomedical research, especially in genetics, now requires the establishment of standards for the protection of communities. We have developed such a strategy, based on five steps. (i) Identification of community characteristics relevant to the biomedical research setting, (ii) delineation of a typology of different types of communities using these characteristics, (iii) determination of the range of possible community protections, (iv) creation of connections between particular protections and one or more community characteristics necessary for its …
Control Of Developmental Timing In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Victor Ambros
Control Of Developmental Timing In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Victor Ambros
Victor R. Ambros
Studies of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans have identified genetic and molecular mechanisms controlling temporal patterns of developmental events. Mutations in genes of the C. elegans heterochronic pathway cause altered temporal patterns of larval development, in which cells at certain larval stages execute cell division patterns or differentiation programs normally specific for other stages. The products of the heterochronic genes include transcriptional and translational regulators and two different cases of novel small translational regulatory RNAs. Other genes of the pathway encode evolutionarily conserved proteins, including a homolog of the Drosophila Period circadian timing regulator, and a member of the nuclear receptor …
