Irish American Women: Forgotten First-Wave Feminists, Sally Barr Ebest

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

Numerous books have been written about American feminism and its influence on education and society. But none have recognized the key role played by Irish American women in exposing injustice and protecting their rights. Certainly their literary heritage, inherent knowledge of English, and membership in the single largest ethnic group gave them an advantage. But their dual positions as colonized, second-class citizens of their country and their religion gave them their political edge, a trait that has been evident since the Irish first stepped off the boat and that continues to this day. The Milk Connection: Portland’S Infant Milk Station And Public Health Education, Annette Vance Dorey

Progressive Era reformers worked to improve the health standards and living conditions of poor and immigrant populations in United States cities. In this article, Annette K. Vance Dorey highlights the often overlooked work of the nurses who managed “milk stations” - early public health clinics established for distributing clean milk in urban neighborhoods. Dorey argues that these nurses, who also conducted parent education classes and provided access to a range of health services, played an important role in the reduction of urban infant mortality rales and the development of the public health profession. Each year the Adams County Historical Society receives inquiries either in person or by mail from persons asking for information about a young woman who with the rest of her family was seized and carried off from their home in what is now Adams county during the French and Indian War. She was the only member of that family who was not slaughtered as the raiding party and its captives moved into the western part of Pennsylvania.
