This is a history of oyster abundance in Maine, and the subsequent decline of oyster abundance. It is a history of oystering, oyster fisheries, and oyster commerce in Maine. It is a history of the transplanting of oysters to Maine, and experiments with oysters in Maine, and of oyster culture in Maine. This history takes place from the 1600s to the 1970s.

For over two months during the summer of 1880, eight young members of the Champlain Society made daily excursions, on foot and by boat, around Mount Desert Island. They collected plants and birds, and dredged small animals from the mud of Somes Sound. They stared at the rocks along shore and took photographs. Under the leadership of “Captain” Charles Eliot, son of Harvard President Charles William Eliot, the students were on the Island for the summer to “do some work in some branch of natural history or science.”

Maine Policy Review

Maine had a long history of economic and technological innovation which began long before it became a state in 1820. Over the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, woolen mills, shoe factories, paper mills, hydroelectric power and utilities, and other components of mainstream America’s industrial and commercial revolutions became key parts of most Mainers’ daily lives. This article argues that the blue highway signs one passes on entering Maine—Maine: The Way Life Should Be—conceal much of Maine’s actual past and present, especially its rich and complex history of innovation.

From the earliest small private and university libraries of the 1700s to today’s high-speed Internet-connected institutions, the history of Maine’s libraries mirrors the development of the state and provides a sense of the concerns people had for access to information and education. This paper will highlight the clashes between the Kennebeck Proprietors and Thomas Hutchinson, the last Royal Governor of Massachusetts. The Kennebeck Proprietors were a company of influential Boston merchants who saw the Kennebec River valley as a lucrative opportunity on the Maine frontier. As the Proprietors expanded their claims Thomas Hutchinson often interceded to block their aspirations. These land disputes highlight the ambitions of the Proprietors and the actions Hutchinson took to block them. It would be these clashes that would motivate the Proprietors to have a direct interest in the events of August 1765.

Maine Bicentennial

The Embargo of 1807 was passed by the United States Congress on December 22nd 1807. It marked the culmination of American attempts to deal effectively with the warring powers of Europe and to prevent their depredations on American ships and seamen. With all foreign trade cut off and coastal trade increasingly difficult, much of Maine's economic life was at a standstill for the duration of the fourteen-month embargo. The restrictive laws came at a time the District of Maine was engaged in a profitable and growing trade with ports all over the world.
