Studying Society, Knowing Ourselves, Maine Perspective
Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
A looming recession. Escalating health care costs. Ethical responsibility in local government and journalism. The political and economic realities of the Persian Gulf Crisis. Social services for the homeless, families in crisis, and mentally ill. Such issues confront and challenge us on a daily basis. As members of a modern society, it is crucial that we understand ourselves and others. It is important to study society from the individual level to the level of cultures and populations, looking at the individual in interaction with other people, social systems and networks, all in an attempt to understand and appreciate the world …

Around the world, from Canada to Australia, from Latin America to the Soviet Union, in Western Europe and Japan, 57 University of Maine undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled in Study Abroad programs this fall, and four are involved in student teaching experiences abroad. More students will participate during the spring semester. Wherever they go, these students, like the 50 returned Study Abroad students currently on campus, will bring back to Maine an invaluable international perspective of the U.S.A. and the world.

Connecting, Maine Perspective
Connecting, Maine Perspective
Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
The lecture hall was abuzz as the students filed into Sandy Caron's class. They knew there would be a guest lecturer, but few were prepared for who walked through the door. At first the woman appeared shy and hesitant. Dressed in a long calico gown and bonnett, she told the students she was there to "acquaint" them with the ways of family life as she knew them - back in the 1700s.

Others were brought back by railroad employees or purchases through catalogs sent to the Northeast by reservation traders.
