This letter was written by Frank D. Denton to R.J. Wilson, Arkansas Senator concerning his nomination to the position of Sergeant-at-Arms of the Senate. The position of Sergeant-at-Arms originated in 1789in order to keep Senators in the room long enough to conduct business. Currently, the position provides law enforcement for the Senate and has the authority to arrest any member of the Senate, including the President, if they break the rules of the body.
