Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 3566. Scrapbook, together with clippings and ephemera contained therein, of Cora Gossom, Bowling Green, Kentucky. Although many of its pages are missing, the book is a “Mark Twain’s Scrapbook,” containing pages coated with a light adhesive that required a slight application of moisture instead of glue. The contents relate primarily to news and local social events of interest to Cora, including her own debut. Loose items include a humorous novelty card warning of “fishing pox” and a postcard extolling William Jennings Bryan.

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Collection 699. Rickie Z. Ashby, a native of Ohio County, amassed this material as he worked on various historical and genealogical research projects. The chief focus of the collection is the vigilante group known as the Possum Hunters, which operated in the first quarter of the twentieth century in various western Kentucky counties, chiefly Butler, Muhlenberg, Ohio, and Daviess counties. Secondary emphasis is on other vigilante groups in southcentral Kentucky, including the Night Riders.

Letters to Captain Lee Owsley Haskins, written by his family in Bowling Green, Kentucky during his World War I military service. His father describes his business activities, discusses his son’s plans after the war, and reports in November 1918 of the ebbing of the influenza epidemic and the Board of Health’s plan to “lift the Ban.” His mother refers to his recent surgery, and his sister writes of the arrival of a troop train in Bowling Green and the soldiers’ march downtown for canteen service.
