Quantum Grover's Oracles With Symmetry Boolean Functions, Peng Gao Aug 2021

Quantum Grover's Oracles With Symmetry Boolean Functions, Peng Gao

Dissertations and Theses

Quantum computing has become an important research field of computer science and engineering. Among many quantum algorithms, Grover's algorithm is one of the most famous ones. Designing an effective quantum oracle poses a challenging conundrum in circuit and system-level design for practical application realization of Grover's algorithm.

In this dissertation, we present a new method to build quantum oracles for Grover's algorithm to solve graph theory problems. We explore generalized Boolean symmetric functions with lattice diagrams to develop a low quantum cost and area efficient quantum oracle. We study two graph theory problems: cycle detection of undirected graphs and generalized …

Multiple Diagram Navigation, Hisham Benotman Mar 2020

Multiple Diagram Navigation, Hisham Benotman

Dissertations and Theses

Domain novices learning about a new subject can struggle to find their way in large collections. Typical searching and browsing tools are better utilized if users know what to search for or browse to. In this dissertation, we present Multiple Diagram Navigation (MDN) to assist domain novices by providing multiple overviews of the content matter using multiple diagrams. Rather than relying on specific types of visualizations, MDN superimposes any type of diagram or map over a collection of documents, allowing content providers to reveal interesting perspectives of their content. Domain novices can navigate through the content in an exploratory way …

The Silencing Power Of Algorithms: How The Facebook News Feed Algorithm Manipulates Users' Perceptions Of Opinion Climates, Callie Jessica Morgan Jul 2018

The Silencing Power Of Algorithms: How The Facebook News Feed Algorithm Manipulates Users' Perceptions Of Opinion Climates, Callie Jessica Morgan

University Honors Theses

This extended literature review investigates how the architecture and features of the Facebook Newsfeed algorithm, EdgeRank, can inhibit and facilitate the expression of political opinions. This paper will investigate how Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann's theory on public opinion, Spiral of Silence, can be used to assess the Facebook news feed as a political opinion source that actively shapes users' perceptions of minority and majority opinion climates. The feedback loops created by the algorithm's criteria influences users' decisions to self-censor or express their political opinions with interpersonal connections and unfamiliar connections on the site.

Concurrent Localized Wait-Free Operations On A Red Black Tree, Vitaliy Kubushyn Dec 2014

Concurrent Localized Wait-Free Operations On A Red Black Tree, Vitaliy Kubushyn

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

A red-black tree is a type of self-balancing binary search tree. Some wait-free algorithms have been proposed for concurrently accessing and modifying a red-black tree from multiple threads in shared memory systems. Most algorithms presented utilize the concept of a "window", and are entirely top-down implementations. Top-down algorithms like these have to operate on large portions of the tree, and operations on nodes that would otherwise not overlap at all still have to compete with and help one another.

A wait-free framework is proposed for obtaining ownership of small portions of the tree at a time in a bottom-up manner. …

Scheduling Jobs On Two Uniform Parallel Machines To Minimize The Makespan, Sandhya Kodimala

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The problem of scheduling n independent jobs on m uniform parallel machines such that the total completion time is minimized is a NP-Hard problem. We propose several heuristic-based online algorithms for machines with different speeds called Q2||Cmax. To show the efficiency of the proposed online algorithms, we compute the optimal solution for Q2||Cmax using pseudo-polynomial algorithms based on dynamic programming method. The pseudo-polynomial algorithm has time complexity O (n T2) and can be run on reasonable time for small number of jobs and small processing times. This optimal offline algorithm is …

Message Passing Algorithm For Different Problems Sum, Mean, Guide And Sorting In A Rooted Tree Network., Sabaresh Nageswara Rao Maddula

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In this thesis, we give message passing algorithms in distributed environment for five different problems of a rooted tree having n nodes. In the first algorithm, every node has a value; the root calculates the sum of those values, and sends it to all the nodes in the network. In the second algorithm, the root computes the value of mean of values of all the nodes, and sends it to all nodes of the network. The third algorithm calculates the guide pairs. Guide pair of a node x is an ordered pair (pre_index(x), post_index(x)), where pre_index(x) and post_index(x) are the …

Resizable, Scalable, Concurrent Hash Tables, Josh Triplett, Paul E. Mckenney, Jonathan Walpole Jun 2011

Resizable, Scalable, Concurrent Hash Tables, Josh Triplett, Paul E. Mckenney, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present algorithms for shrinking and expanding a hash table while allowing concurrent, wait-free, linearly scalable lookups. These resize algorithms allow the hash table to maintain constant-time performance as the number of entries grows, and reclaim memory as the number of entries decreases, without delaying or disrupting readers.

We implemented our algorithms in the Linux kernel, to test their performance and scalability. Benchmarks show lookup scalability improved 125x over readerwriter locking, and 56% over the current state-of-the-art for Linux, with no performance degradation for lookups during a resize.

To achieve this performance, this hash table implementation uses a new concurrent …

Waypoint Generation Based On Sensor Aimpoint, Shannon M. Farrell Mar 2009

Waypoint Generation Based On Sensor Aimpoint, Shannon M. Farrell

Theses and Dissertations

Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates has emphasized a need for a greater number of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) assets to support combatant commanders and military operations globally. Unmanned systems, especially MAVs, used as ISR platforms provide the ability to maintain covertness during missions and help reduce the risk to human life. This research develops waypoint generation algorithms required to keep a point of interest (POI) in the field of view (FOV) of a fixed sensor on a micro air vehicle (MAV) in the presence of a constant wind.
Fixed sensors, while cheaper and less prone to mechanical failure …

Use Of Tabu Search In A Solver To Map Complex Networks Onto Emulab Testbeds, Jason E. Macdonald Mar 2007

Use Of Tabu Search In A Solver To Map Complex Networks Onto Emulab Testbeds, Jason E. Macdonald

Theses and Dissertations

The University of Utah's solver for the testbed mapping problem uses a simulated annealing metaheuristic algorithm to map a researcher's experimental network topology onto available testbed resources. This research uses tabu search to find near-optimal physical topology solutions to user experiments consisting of scale-free complex networks. While simulated annealing arrives at solutions almost exclusively by chance, tabu search incorporates the use of memory and other techniques to guide the search towards good solutions. Both search algorithms are compared to determine whether tabu search can produce equal or higher quality solutions than simulated annealing in a shorter amount of time. It …

A Fast And Simple Algorithm For Computing M Shortest Paths In Stage Graph, M. Sherwood, Laxmi P. Gewali, Henry Selvaraj, Venkatesan Muthukumar

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

We consider the problem of computing m shortest paths between a source node s and a target node t in a stage graph. Polynomial time algorithms known to solve this problem use complicated data structures. This paper proposes a very simple algorithm for computing all m shortest paths in a stage graph efficiently. The proposed algorithm does not use any complicated data structure and can be implemented in a straightforward way by using only array data structure. This problem appears as a sub-problem for planning risk reduced multiple k-legged trajectories for aerial vehicles.

The Window Least Mean Square Error Algorithm, Anna Semenovna Degtyarena

Theses Digitization Project

In order to improve the performance of LMS (least mean square) algorithm by decreasing the amount of calculations this research proposes to make an update on each step only for those elements from the input data set, that fall within a small window W near the separating hyperplane surface. This work aims to describe in detail the results that can be achieved by using the proposed LMS with window learning algorithm in information systems that employ the methodology of neural network for the purposes of classification.

A Parallel Algorithm To Solve The Mathematical Problem "Double Coset Enumeration Of S₂₄ Over M₂₄", Elena Yavorska Harris Jan 2003

A Parallel Algorithm To Solve The Mathematical Problem "Double Coset Enumeration Of S₂₄ Over M₂₄", Elena Yavorska Harris

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis presents and evaluates a new parallel algorithm that computes all single cosets in the double coset M₂₄ P M₂₄, where P is a permutation on n points of a certain cycle structure, and M₂₄ is the Mathieu group related to a Steiner system S(5, 8, 24) as its automorphism group. The purpose of this work is not to replace the existing algorithms, but rather to explore a possibility to extend calculations of single cosets beyond the limits encountered when using currently available methods.

Active Processor Scheduling Using Evolution Algorithms, David J. Caswell Dec 2002

Active Processor Scheduling Using Evolution Algorithms, David J. Caswell

Theses and Dissertations

The allocation of processes to processors has long been of interest to engineers. The processor allocation problem considered here assigns multiple applications onto a computing system. With this algorithm researchers could more efficiently examine real-time sensor data like that used by United States Air Force digital signal processing efforts or real-time aerosol hazard detection as examined by the Department of Homeland Security. Different choices for the design of a load balancing algorithm are examined in both the problem and algorithm domains. Evolutionary algorithms are used to find near-optimal solutions. These algorithms incorporate multiobjective coevolutionary and parallel principles to create an …

Dynamic Load Distribution In Mist, K. Al-Saqabi, R. M. Prouty, Dylan Mcnamee, Steve Otto, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper presents an algorithm for scheduling parallel applications in large-scale, multiuser, heterogeneous distributed systems. The approach is primarily targeted at systems that harvest idle cycles in general-purpose workstation networks, but is also applicable to clustered computer systems and massively parallel processors. The algorithm handles unequal processor capacities, multiple architecture types and dynamic variations in the number of processes and available processors. Scheduling decisions are driven by the desire to minimize turnaround time while maintaining fairness among competing applications. For efficiency, the virtual processors (VPs) of each application are gang scheduled on some subset of the available physical processors.

Inference Algorithm Performance And Selection Under Constrained Resources, Brett J. Borghetti Dec 1996

Inference Algorithm Performance And Selection Under Constrained Resources, Brett J. Borghetti

Theses and Dissertations

Knowing that reasoning over probabilistic networks is, in general, NP-hard, and that most reasoning environments have limited resources, we need to select algorithms that can solve a given problem as fast as possible. This thesis presents a method for predicting the relative performance of reasoning algorithms based on the domain characteristics of the target knowledge structure. Armed with this knowledge, the research shows how to choose the best algorithm to solve the problem. The effects of incompleteness of the knowledge base at the time of inference is explored, and requirements for reasoning over incompleteness are defined. Two algorithms for reasoning …
