Shattered Dolls: An Examination Of Authorship And The Boundaries Of Female Asian Stereotypes In Western Theatrical Literature And Film, Maya Mcgowan
Honors Projects
On March 15, 2018, an event called “Orientalism and the Portrayal of Asian Americans in Musicals,” co-hosted by Center Theatre Group and East West Players, brought to light questions involving misrepresentation of Asian Americans in theatrical literature. At the root of their argument was the idea that American playwrights had created stereotypical caricatures about the Asian and Asian American communities and thus were mistelling their stories. Through my research and a cumulative performance, I have found that authorship is the primary method for combating stereotypes within the theatre. In this paper, I will focus on the importance of authorship and …

Since 1978, the Illinois Shakespeare Festival, or ISF, has been an important cultural attraction for the Bloomington-Normal community. The festival hosts over 10,000 guests and a large number of seasonal staff over the summer months: 125 were listed in their most recently available annual report (Season Report 2012). The festival also has an extensive summer camp program, community outreach, and a touring company. The Illinois Shakespeare Festival's cultural impact has been …

“Applied Theatre” is a useful umbrella term for all committed to the power of theatre in making a difference to the human life span. It is played in spaces that are not traditionally defined as theatre buildings. The performances include participants who may or may not be skilled in theatre arts and audiences who have a vested interest in the issue taken up by the performance or are members of the community. One category of Applied Theatre is “Theatre for Community.” This theatre provides a platform for individuals to come together, share in stories that unite them, and explore their …

Pseudolus At The Ludimegalenses: Re-Creating Roman Comedy In Context, Nancy Sultan
Scholarship
This is a post-production report on a student reenactment of the Roman Ludi Megalenses (Megalensia), including a ludus scaenicus, at Illinois Wesleyan University in May 2013. Students studied and re-created some of the rituals commonly associated in antiquity with the worship of the Magna Mater, including a procession of both Phrygian worshippers and Roman citizens and a staged reading of Plautus’ Pseudolus in Latin and English. We grappled with questions of text and metatheatricality, theatrical and sacred space, actors, music, movement, costumes (including masks), authenticity, audience reception and occasion. The reenactment allowed us to gain a unique historical perspective by …

Invisible Lines: An Enthnodrama Of The Bloomington Communities, Raven Stubbs

Bloomington has a very nostalgic, dream like feeling to it according to the common IWU student's impression, myself included. It wasn't until became heavily involved in volunteer work through the Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) that 1 realized that Bloomington is not the affluent lWU bubble and Veterans Parkway shopping utopia that we usually have in our minds. Bloomington, as a community, can't be drench in affluence, as we perceive it to be, because right east of Market St. is a majorative population of low-income, underrepresented minorities. 1 set out to discover what the community of Bloomington truly is at its …
