Making The Case For The Use Of The Ksu Archives And Special Collections Through Interpretive Videos, Helen Thomas
Graduate Scholarly Works
One of the challenges faced by Kennesaw State University’s Museums, Archives and Rare Books Department is a lack of awareness of both the existence of our collections and the many potential research applications that archives and rare books provide. This series of short videos makes the case to potential users as to why we collect these materials and how they are useful and relevant to a variety of research interests. Each video pairs an item or collection from the KSU Archives and Special Collections (including the Bentley Rare Book Museum) with expert interpretation provided by a KSU faculty member in …

The Effects Of Color Choice In Web Design On The Usability For Individuals With Color-Blindness, Theresa Marie Sparks
The Effects Of Color Choice In Web Design On The Usability For Individuals With Color-Blindness, Theresa Marie Sparks
MSU Graduate Theses
Websites are not accessible to many individuals with color-vision deficiency or color-blindness; this is because of poor color and design choice. One must design websites with these individuals in mind. In this study, it was found that color choice on aspects such as body text, background, and links did have an effect on how individuals with color-blindness were able to use and read websites.
Environmental Data Visualizations: Opportunities For Technical Communication Research, Alissa Schmidt
Environmental Data Visualizations: Opportunities For Technical Communication Research, Alissa Schmidt
Technical Communication Capstone Course
Environmental issues touch nearly every field. Technical communication researchers have advocated for multidisciplinary environmental communication research to effectively address the depth of environmental issues and speed at which environmental issues evolve. Visuals are often used in environmental communication to help clarify complex information. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the author utilizes secondary research to answer the question, ‘how do data visualizations support environmental communication?’ This research illustrates the value of using environmental data visualizations to add credibility and to facilitate interpretation within environmental communication. Alignment among disciplines, however, is limited in other attributes of environmental data visualizations such as representing temporal …

“You Are Sexist!” “No, I’M A Sports Reporter.” An Analysis Of Females’ And Males’ Portrayal In Print Media, Lauryn Beam
Student Scholar Showcase
Media itself has always been an outlet for the public. It has been used for entertainment, information, and a societal tool from the time when it was first advancing. Sport media is a genre all its own. There has always been a gender divide in sport and sport media. For this critical study, print media sources from different outlets were analyzed to compare two female athletes against two male athletes. The athletes being compared were Serena Williams and John McEnroe, as well as Brandi Chastain and Nicolas Anelka. Each article was analyzed for how the journalist portrayed the athlete, in …

Workplace Democracy And The Problem Of Equality, Jared Sterling Colton, Avery C. Edenfield, Steve Holmes
Workplace Democracy And The Problem Of Equality, Jared Sterling Colton, Avery C. Edenfield, Steve Holmes
English Faculty Publications
Purpose: Professional communicators are becoming more invested in unique configurations of power in organizations, including non-hierarchical and democratic workplaces. While organizations dedicated to democratic processes may enact power differently than conventional organizations, they may fall short of practicing equality. This article explains the differences in non-hierarchical workplaces, considers businesses where democracy is a goal, and argues for considering equality as a habitual practice, particularly when writing regulatory documents.
Method: We conduct a review of the literature on non-hierarchical workplaces and organizational democracy, applying Jacques Rancière’s concept of equality to two examples (one using primary data collection and one using secondary …

Open World Translation: Localizing Japanese Video Games For A Globalizing World, Emily Suvannasankha
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This paper investigates the most effective ways of handling cultural differences in the Japanese-to-English game localization process. The thesis advocates for applying the Skopos theory of translation to game localization; analyzes how topics such as social issues, humor, fan translation, transcreation, and censorship have been handled in the past; and explores how international players react to developers' localization choices. It also includes interviews with three Japanese-to-English translators who have worked with major Japanese game companies to gain insight into how the industry operates today. Through the deconstruction of different aspects of Japanese-to-English localization, this analysis aims to help the game …

The Evolution Of Sunset Magazine's Cooking Department: The Accommodation Of Men's And Women's Cooking In The 1930s, Jennifer Hoolhorst Pagano
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The Western regional magazine Sunset has been published under a series of owners and publishers since 1898. In 1928, Sunset was purchased by Lawrence Lane, a Midwestern magazine executive who transformed it from a failing turn-of-the-century, general interest publication about the West, into a successful magazine about living in the West for the Western middle-class. Sunset had always been a magazine for men and women, and one that appealed to both male and female intellectuals at the time Lane purchased it. Lane and his editors attempted to interject more rigid middle-class ideals into a magazine that had espoused ideas that …
Automatically Extracting Meaning From Legal Texts: Opportunities And Challenges, Kevin D. Ashley
Automatically Extracting Meaning From Legal Texts: Opportunities And Challenges, Kevin D. Ashley
Articles
This paper examines impressive new applications of legal text analytics in automated contract review, litigation support, conceptual legal information retrieval, and legal question answering against the backdrop of some pressing technological constraints. First, artificial intelligence (Al) programs cannot read legal texts like lawyers can. Using statistical methods, Al can only extract some semantic information from legal texts. For example, it can use the extracted meanings to improve retrieval and ranking, but it cannot yet extract legal rules in logical form from statutory texts. Second, machine learning (ML) may yield answers, but it cannot explain its answers to legal questions or …
