Late Industrialization And Political Change: The Case Of Germany, Judith C. Peloquin Dec 1973

Late Industrialization And Political Change: The Case Of Germany, Judith C. Peloquin

Sociology ETDs

The advance of industrialization and the process of modernization in all countries produced significant shifts in the distribution of wealth and massively affected existing relations of power. The transition from the pre-industrial to the modern world is examined in Germany in an effort, to explore the causal factors which facilitated the rise of a fascist political system in Germany, while democratic and communistic political systems resulted in other countries. Barrington Moore's theory of the coalition of economic interests that forms as a result of the inherited social structure remaining from feudal organizations is utilized to explain the rise of the …

Seating Patterns In The College Classroom: The Relationship Between Spatial Location And Selected Role, Personality, And Status Variables, Dolores Burchell Jones

Masters Theses

Purpose and Theory

The Problem

Studies dealing with the use of space have been concerned primarily with territoriality, the way man perceives space through his senses, and with the manner by which culture affects the location of persons in space. This study, like others, falls under the rubric of spatial ecology in that it deals with the occupation of space. This study focuses on the college classroom in an attempt to determine if the occupation of space is systematically patterned, that is, whether particular areas of the classroom are occupied by students with specifiable characteristics. In this context, the particular …

Latent Conflict In The Classroom, Joel H. Henderson

Masters Theses

The Problem

The Study of Conflict

The purpose of this study is to examine social conflict. More specifically, latent conflict in the classroom will be the focus of this study. Three classes of variables will be discussed: 1. teacher characteristics, 2. student characteristics, and 3. contextual variables. These variables will be examined as to their ability to explain variation in latent conflict in the classroom.

The following discussion will focus on conflict in education as a "social problem." Previous literature will be examined as to the theoretical and empirical importance of the concept of conflict in social research and a …

Dimensionality And Internal Composition Of The Twenty-Two Item Mental Health Inventory, John William Fox Aug 1973

Dimensionality And Internal Composition Of The Twenty-Two Item Mental Health Inventory, John William Fox

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

Social scientists have long been concerned with the relationships between mental disorder and various sociocultural factors, such as, social economic status, ethnic background, sex, age, and marital status. Until quite recently, the majority of studies that have investigated these relationships have defined cases of mental disorder solely in terms of whether or not an individual was in psychiatric treatment (see Faris and Dunham, 1939; Rose and Stub, 1955; Hollingshead and Redlich, 1958).

The utilization of psychiatric treatment as the only criterion of mental disorder, however, has been criticized by a number of researchers. Felix and Bowers (1948), …

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Urban Concentration And Occupational Structure On Wage Differentials Between Women And Men In Selected Geographic Divisions Of The United States, Susan Stickler Hession-Eaton Aug 1973

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Urban Concentration And Occupational Structure On Wage Differentials Between Women And Men In Selected Geographic Divisions Of The United States, Susan Stickler Hession-Eaton

Graduate Thesis Collection

When attempting to explain the economics of occupational structure, income servies as the apex of discrimination. Women earn only 60% of what men earn. This statistic does not offend enough people since efforts to change the situation have provided only further resistance by women and men for improvement in the earnings split. Women tend to receive lower wage and salary earnings than men because of differences in types of jobs held, job training and continuity of work experience. Large numbers of women work in traditionally low-paying occupations and low-wage industries. Women tend to respond to their cultural up-bringing. My hypothesis …

Two Delivery System Contexts For The Elderly:The "Institutional" Approach And The "Community" Approach., Mary Sarita Freer Jul 1973

Two Delivery System Contexts For The Elderly:The "Institutional" Approach And The "Community" Approach., Mary Sarita Freer

Dissertations and Theses

Theoretically every society has some institutional means which seeks to prevent and alleviate personal misfortune and illness "Institutions are standardized solutions to collective problems." The increasing population rate of older persons, many of whom suffer from chronic diseases and disabilities, does pose a collective problem for society. Formerly, the "institutional" approach developed to address the needs of chronic aging patients and society. Today the "community" approach, by which community service agencies whose goal is to help older adults remain independent of total institutional care by supplying supportive services, is achieving recognition .

This thesis is an exploratory study to assess …

Between Words And Actions: The Problem Of Motivation In Symbolic Interactionism, Robert Scott Broadhead Jun 1973

Between Words And Actions: The Problem Of Motivation In Symbolic Interactionism, Robert Scott Broadhead

Dissertations and Theses

The development of a theory of motivation in symbolic interactionism is traced, with particular reference to the work of G.H. Mead, Kenneth Burke, C.W. Mills, Nelson Foote, and Ernest Becker. Specific attention is focused on comparing the original theoretical assumptions of particularly Mead and Burke to the varying formulations of the problems of motivation that were later developed by symbolic interactionists. Specifically, it is argued that, primarily due to Burke's analysis, the traditional practice of deterministically explaining human action as being the result of variously imagined motives "in" people is, in fact, no explanation at all but simply a variety …

Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory : A Definition Of Woman By Julia Ward Howe, Gayle Ann Gullett Jun 1973

Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory : A Definition Of Woman By Julia Ward Howe, Gayle Ann Gullett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Although neglected by historians Julia Ward Howe contributed much more to American civilization than the words of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic." She was one of the founders of women's clubs and a prominent member of the women suffrage movement. At the turn of the century, Mrs. Howe was nearly a household name. She was eulogized at her death in 1910 as "the most distinguished woman in America." Mrs. Howe was the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a distinction not shared by another woman until 1930.

Several biographies have been written on the …

Community Service For Elderly People In Riverside City, Libia Correa De Camacho Jun 1973

Community Service For Elderly People In Riverside City, Libia Correa De Camacho

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

There is an increasing concern for providing services for elderly people, and most communities in the United States offer a wide variety of them. Inadequate planning and little evaluation are common problems in the services offered by many communities.

The main objectives of this study were to assess the kind of services available for elderly people in the city of Riverside, second, to make observations on the relations existing among the agencies delivering those services, and third, to make an evaluation of those services based on the information supplied by the agencies themselves.

This was intended be descriptive research, and …

Attitudes Of Foreign Students Toward Missions, Donald R. Roy Jun 1973

Attitudes Of Foreign Students Toward Missions, Donald R. Roy

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In 1969 research was conducted by Professor Betty Stirling of the Department of Sociology at Loma Linda University on the attitudes of SDA college students in North America and Australia toward missions. This research was directed primarily to Western students--students who were considered prospective missionaries and on whom the future of missions rested. My research continued this theme, but it was concerned with the attitudes of those individuals to whom the mission program was directed, nationals of all the world mission fields, toward missions.

This population was limited to include foreign students enrolled at Loma Linda University. A random sample …

Growth Of Transcendental Meditation: A Sociological Study, Jonathan Lewis Miller May 1973

Growth Of Transcendental Meditation: A Sociological Study, Jonathan Lewis Miller

Senior Scholar Papers

Sociology, in concerning itself with methodology and cultural determinism, may have overlooked the value of human experience in determining social action. We feel that the structural-functionalist point of view is not mutually exclusive with that of symbolic interaction theory. The field of collective behavior has not adequately explained a certain incidence of human activity called Transcendental Meditation. This paper will define Transcendental Meditation in sociological terms and explore its growth in terms of structural-functionalism,as well as in terms of the symbol-making faculty of human experience.

In the first chapter, the author will state his

biases and background as well as the …

Freedom High School:An Evaluation Of An Alternative Educational Program For Potential Dropouts., Joanne Lee Fields May 1973

Freedom High School:An Evaluation Of An Alternative Educational Program For Potential Dropouts., Joanne Lee Fields

Sociology ETDs

Programs which are designed to persuade youngsters to remain in high school through graduation are necessary as a buffer against personal and social problems generated from failure to acquire a high school diploma. No one standardized solution to the school dropout problem exists. Rather activities to diminish the dropout rate assume many forms. A new approach recently brought to bear on this crucial problem in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is an alternative educational program, Freedom High school. The broad purpose of this inquiry, therefore, was to investigate the role of Freedom High School as a dropout prevention program.

Included among the …

Personality Correlates Of Interpersonal Perception In A Residential Treatment Center For Adolescent Girls, Raymond Paul Micciche, Terrell Lynn Eheler May 1973

Personality Correlates Of Interpersonal Perception In A Residential Treatment Center For Adolescent Girls, Raymond Paul Micciche, Terrell Lynn Eheler

Dissertations and Theses

While men do indeed construct self-validating and often peculiar interpretations of the realities of their world the simple fact that these views become consensually shared doctrines of experience does not protect them from the revisionism of historical scrutiny. These perceptions of the world become retrospectively altered as developing bodies of knowledge reject them as being clearly deceptive or anachronistic. The concept of psychopathology, distinguished historically under many rubrics, has not been immune to these same processes of modification, nor has it ever been free of the diverse irrationalities which men of all ages have constructed to explain the etiology and …

Breeding Bird Populations And Habitat Utilization In Aspen Stands Of Upper Logan Canyon, Janet L. Young May 1973

Breeding Bird Populations And Habitat Utilization In Aspen Stands Of Upper Logan Canyon, Janet L. Young

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Censuses of two 20-acre plots in upper Logan Canyon, Utah, were made by the spot-mapping method during 1970 and 1971 to determine the differences in composition and density of breeding-bird populations in aspen stands of significantly different density and stature. The less dense stand of greater average d.b.h., average height and per cent ground cover had 20 breeding species totalling 615 pairs per 100 acres (expressed as equivalent territories). The more dense stand of smaller trees and brushy undergrowth had 14 breeding species with 267.5 equivalent territories per 100 acres. Nine species were found on both areas. Observations of foraging …

Net Migration As A Factor Affecting Metropolitan Growth In Utah: 1950 To 1970, Kooros M. Mahmoudi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The objectives of this study were to measure net in- or out-migration to or from the Standard Metropolitan Areas of Utah between 1950-60 and 1960-70, and to study selected socio-economic factors relating to migration and the growth of SMSA's. Specifically, the factors of migration and natural population increase were central in an analysis of population redistribution. Selected demographic characteristics of the migrants such as sex and age were also studied to establish their impact upon the SMSA population structure. The relationship between population change in the SMSA's and economic factors of labor force supply and employment were also reviewed.

Net …

The Mental Patient As Machiavellian: An Exploratory Study, Louise B. Leader Apr 1973

The Mental Patient As Machiavellian: An Exploratory Study, Louise B. Leader

Masters Theses

A basic question in the study of mental illness has been whether mental patients were victims of society or manipulators of their own careers. Four hypotheses were developed to investigate the manipulative aspect of this question. Patients were selected from three different mental institutions: a state hospital, a Veteran's Administration Hospital, and a private church-related hospital. The patients' records and a group-administered battery of test instruments provided the data used to test the hypotheses. Only one of the hypotheses was supported and the basic question remained unanswered. Lack of support for the remaining three hypotheses was not seen as conclusive …
