Sometimes we build our own prisons and those prisons go through a crucial stage at which time, outside forces such as other people can help retrieve you from the depths of your own imprisonment. Unfortunately, these outside forces usually end up acting against you, sending a person deeper and deeper into the trap they laid for themselves. This Senior Project advances the modernization losers thesis, wherein the electoral successes of the far right in Western Europe are attributable to neoliberal fiscal policy, labor market shifts, and the institutional structure of the euro. Building on an existing body of literature that primarily assesses voting behavior through survey research, this paper assesses the relationship between right-wing electoral successes and the socioeconomic status of semi-skilled, blue-collar laborers thought to comprise the core voting base of extreme right parties, by using panel data at the national and provincial levels to answer the question, “To what extent has the declining position of …

Gender Empowerment In The Development Economics Literature: The Language Of Choice, Preferences And Agency, Pranay Panday

In my project, I try to trace how our present understanding of gender empowerment is formed, and how mainstream economics literature has accommodated feminist contributions to the concept. I look at neoclassical household models, feminist critiques of the same models, foundational ideas on gender empowerment, and finally the current development economics literature on empowerment. I find that the concept of choices and preferences, and in particular the formation of preferences, is central to understanding gender empowerment. This research sets out to highlight the life-altering degree to which negative, domineering depictions of Black women has had and continues to have on their livelihood and also to argue that due to their systemic inability to control and craft their own reputation, this should be categorized as a human rights violation and enforced on the grounds of defamation law. This project is composed of two essays examining the credit markets for the finance of automobiles. In particular, both chapters focus on subprime loans for the purchase of used cars, often financed by independent finance companies. In the first chapter, I review Hyman P. Minsky’s writing on credit and securitization to create a theoretical framework that explains how auto finance has evolved. This chapter’s analysis primarily compares the current period of subprime auto finance with short boom and bust cycle experienced by the auto finance sector in the 1990s. Based on qualitative interviews in the South Bronx, a residentially segregated area in New York City notorious for its historically concentrated poverty and physical urban decay, this study explores lived experiences that reveal the impacts of living in an urban poor neighborhood on quality of life. Neighborhood attachment is one lens to evaluate residents’ subjective perceptions of quality of life in relation to objective qualities of neighborhoods. Contrary to previous research linking strong neighborhood attachment to wealthier residential environments, a majority of South Bronx residents who participated in this study share a fairly strong sense of neighborhood attachment. Remnants Of The Bodice Ripper: How Consent Is Characterized In Heterosexual And Lesbian Erotic Romance Novels, Audrey Miles Malloy

The present study aims to better understand the relationship between gender role representation and characterization of sexual consent in erotic romance novels. To test this, two coders read the current best-selling heterosexual and lesbian romance novels listed on Barnes & Noble’s website and coded for both adherence to the Western Sexual Script and clarity of sexual consent. Western Sexual Script is the pervasive set of typical gender roles perpetuated in contemporary media. Statistical analyses found that there was a main effect of character’s gender identity on “gender typical traits” for wealth, sexual experience, dominance, and passivity, meaning that masculine characters …

(In)Hospitable: Refugees As "Guests" In Germany Today, Rebecca Jade Lapoint

This project aims to examine how refugees in Germany are conceptualized by the government and the larger population as ‘guests’, and are seen as beneficiaries of German hospitality. Using Jacques Derrida’s Of Hospitality and Mireille Rosello’s Postcolonial Hospitality as a theoretical framework, and guided by interviews conducted by myself with young male refugees living in Berlin, this project deconstruct the selective hospitality offered by Germany and demonstrate how refugees are conceived as impermanent in German society, and are forced to adhere to set notions of guesthood.

Sexual assaulters develop from a culture of learned norms, misunderstanding of consent, and inefficacy in bystander intervention. The most significant sexual assault prevention programs teach individuals to dissociate from this culture, by changing their perceptions, knowledge, and behaviors. However, the lack of long-term effects in these programs depicts a vital loophole in their design. In order to change the culture that breeds sexual assaulters, a program cannot focus solely on individuals’ growth, but must ensure a movement of change in the culture itself. The Human Genome Project was the center of much controversy in the 1990's, as creating a map of the human genome drew into question the boundaries between nature and nurture, or science and society. Fifteen years have now passed since the Human Genome Project's completion, and the new paradigm of genetics is no longer governed by a strict nature/nurture dualism. I’D Rather Be A Slut: An Analysis Of Stigmatized Virginity In Contemporary Sexual Culture, Aja Renee Corliss

The purpose of this study is to analyze and interpret what virginity loss means to young, cisgender women in present-day sexual culture. Based on qualitative interviews with 30 diverse college women, I found that virginity is a highly stigmatized identity. The stigmatization of virginity loss has been historically situated in regards to having sex before marriage; women faced backlash for not upholding virginal purity and for being too sexual. However, the shift to stigmatized virginity represents a radical change in sexual norms and culture; being labelled a virgin is often more stigmatized than being labelled a “slut.” In my analysis, …

“Fit to Print: Hudson’s Gentrification in the New York Times, 1985-2016” is a content analysis of 80 New York Times articles that investigates the way that the City of Hudson N.Y. has been covered by the paper between 1985 and 2016. Findings from this content analysis are presented in 10-year increments. In the first phase of coverage, New York Times reporting primed Hudson for gentrification by depicting it as a site of urban decay hoping to revitalize. In the second phase (1997-2006) New York Times coverage promoted growth regime activities and minimized social problems in the city. In the last …
