Democratic Policing, Building Trust, And Willingness To Call 911: Examining The Relationship Between Law Enforcement Legitimacy And Calling The Police, Kyle Mclean, Brian Lee Miller, Andrew S. Pyle, Olivia Bauwens

Recent debates over policing have centered on the proper role of policing in society. Using the lenses of democratic policing and police legitimacy, we suggest that individuals’ willingness to call the police is one method for understanding the public’s consent to be policed and their view of the appropriate role of policing. This simple relationship is further complicated by differential relationships between willingness to cooperate with the police and four typologies of police legitimacy: trustworthiness, normative alignment, obligation to obey, and traditional legitimacy. The purpose of this exploratory study was to garner a better understanding of the following research question: What factors may contribute to women’s retention in aviation occupations in the United States? The Aviation Occupation Survey was developed drawing from the published literature in organizational retention and diversity in aviation to explore this research question. The survey consisted of 50 Likert-scale items on nine subjects related to career retention. A total of 188 participants (women = 70, men = 118) completed the survey. Results revealed similarities between women and men on perceptions about numerous aspects of their workplace, particularly job satisfaction, …

The purpose of the 1995 survey was to establish baseline information on area residents' attitudes toward and participation in gambling. Our intention is to conduct at least one follow-up survey to measure changes in attitudes and gambling participation among area residents. To facilitate the establishment of a "panel" for future surveys, participants were asked if they would be willing to be interviewed again.

In July 1987, the Nebraska Department of Social Services successfully applied to the U.S. Family Support Administration's Office of Child Support Enforcement for funds to conduct a Demonstration Project. This Demonstration Project, "The Nebraska IV-D/IV-A Intake and Phone Collection Project," was designed to increase telephone activities and improve intake practice as part of the ongoing child support collection activities. It was expected that such improvements would result in an increased level of absent parent location and an increased level of child support payment.

Police departments in the 50 largest cities in the United States made uneven progress in the employment of black and Hispanic officers between 1983 and 1988.

Nearly half (45 percent) of the big-city police departments made significant progress in the employment of black officers. Seventeen percent, however, reported a decline in the percentage of black officers. A similar pattern exists in the employment of Hispanic police officers. Forty-two percent of the departments reported significant increases in the percentage of Hispanic officers employed. Nearly 11 percent (10.6 percent) reported a decline, however, while 17.0 percent reported no change.

Microcomputers first appeared on the commercial marketplace in 1976. Since then, an estimated 40 million microcomputers have been sold and more are being sold each day. A survey conducted in 1982 found that 13 percent of American cities owned microcomputers and that 35 percent planned to buy one or more microcomputers within two years (Norris and Webb, 1984). A follow-up survey conducted three years later found that between 75 percent and 90 percent of city governments owned microcomputers (Scoggins, 1986).

This study was undertaken in order to develop information that could be used to assess the feasibility of Nebraska compliance with federal guidelines under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act for removing juveniles from jails and lockups for adults. Information derived from existing literature, official data on juveniles in Nebraska jails, data generated from a study of existing alternative detention facilities, and a survey of sheriffs was used. In addition, a policy analysis of Nebraska laws and proposed changes in federal JJDPA law was undertaken.

The purpose of this paper on women as terrorists is threefold. The first aim is to examine a portion of the existing literature in order to identify explicit and implicit propositions and hypotheses about the causal dynamics involved in female terrorism. The second is to make a critical examination of these propositions and hypotheses and to categorize the nature of prevailing explanations of women as terrorists. Finally, the policy implications of the various approaches to explaining female involvement in terrorist activities are examined.

Employment of black and Hispanic police officers in the 50 largest cities in the United States falls short of desirable levels. For both racial groups, employment levels are only half of a hypothetical ideal level. During the past few years, real estate markets have . undergone many adjustments. High interest rates, inflation, and competition for investment capital necessitated major changes. On a national level, the subject of housing sales has received considerable commentary. The ability of sellers in Omaha to exchange their units has probably been curtailed as well. This study attempts to examine real estate listings within the Omaha/Douglas County Multiple Listing Service areas (see Map 1) and describe some of the changes.

In 1972 the Goodrich Amendment to the state appropriation for the University of Nebraska at Omaha gave the University an "unparalleled opportunity" to develop further its educational offerings and services to students from low-income backgrounds. The intent of the amendment was to make funds available "for a program to get economically deprived young people in and through UNO."
