Employment Migration Among Graduates Of Southern Land-Grant Universities, John A. Ballweg, Li Li
Employment Migration Among Graduates Of Southern Land-Grant Universities, John A. Ballweg, Li Li
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This research addresses the geographic mobility of 2,028 graduates of 15 Southern land-grant universities. Concern was directed toward those who accepted positions outside the state where they graduated compared with those who remained within the state. The study uses panel data involving a 1976-77 survey while students were enrolled in an agriculture curriculum at land-grant schools and a follow-up survey a decade later. Migration patterns were identified and both demographic characteristics and employment history were examined. Migrant graduates were compared with non-migrant graduates according to what they considered important in accepting a first job as well as actual job earnings. …
Concern About Eating Genetically Engineered Food, Glenn D. Israel, Thomas J. Hoban
Concern About Eating Genetically Engineered Food, Glenn D. Israel, Thomas J. Hoban
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Concern about eating genetically engineered food is explored for a sample of residents from Florida and North Carolina. Previous research on consumers' food safety concerns and perceived risk associated with food production suggests that concern about genetically engineered food is influenced by three factors. Concern is influenced by how well informed consumers are about food technology, their capacity to understand that information, and the compatibility of genetic engineering with consumers' moral beliefs. Utilizing logistic regression, women and persons who viewed genetic engineering to be morally wrong were found to have greater concern about eating genetically engineered foods. Awareness and educational …
Job Placement Of Jtpa-Trained Welfare Recipients: Implications For The Jobs Program In Southern And Nonmetro States, Linda M. Ghelfi
Job Placement Of Jtpa-Trained Welfare Recipients: Implications For The Jobs Program In Southern And Nonmetro States, Linda M. Ghelfi
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
The new Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training Program was instituted to provide education, training, and employment for adults receiving Aid to Families with Dependent Children. This study uses job placement rates for AFDC recipients trained through Job Training Partnership Act programs to gauge the difficulty participants in the new program may have in finding jobs. The results indicate that, at minimum, there would have been 56 percent more participants in the new JOBS program than there were in Job Training Partnership Act programs had the JOBS program started in the 1986 program year. Only about 60 percent of the …
Agriculture, The Environment And Rural Sociology In The South, John K. Thomas
Agriculture, The Environment And Rural Sociology In The South, John K. Thomas
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Agricultural conservation research was revived by rural sociologists in the late 1970s and gained momentum during the 1980s. Most of this research was focused, however, on social and farm organizational factors affecting technology adoption and diffusion. Few studies included environmental factors such as soil characteristics, land physiography, and climate. This paper reviews rural sociologists' recent attention to environmental factors. Next, it describes the ecological and agricultural variation among production regions in the South and overviews Southern producers' participation in federal farm conservation programs. Finally, it prescribes three tasks for rural sociologists in the South to consider if they are to …
Community Structural Changes And The Nature Of Leadership, Gina L. Gilbreath
Community Structural Changes And The Nature Of Leadership, Gina L. Gilbreath
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Many communities in the Southeastern United States have experienced dramatic social and demographic change during the past two decades. Much of this change is brought about by population growth as well as other socioeconomic transformations such as increases in per capita income and educational attainment. One result has been an obvious change in leadership and social structure at the county level as engendered by these population and socio-economic factors. The objective of this research is to examine the nature of leadership and structural change in a Southern county that has been experiencing this categorical type of transformation. More specifically, this …
Determinants Of Farmers' Satisfactions With Farming And With Life: A Replication And Extension, C. Milton Coughenour, Louis Swanson
Determinants Of Farmers' Satisfactions With Farming And With Life: A Replication And Extension, C. Milton Coughenour, Louis Swanson
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
The purpose of this study is to broaden the understanding of the determinants of farmers' satisfactions with life as a whole and with farming per se by replicating and extending Molnar's 1985 study of the overall subjective well-being of Alabama farmers. Data from a 1982 study of Kentucky farmers are used to accomplish this objective. Molnar's conclusions regarding the individual and structural determinants of farmers' global well-being are generally confirmed. In addition, the farmer's global satisfaction with life is shown to be related to his satisfaction with farming but the structural determinants of global and farm satisfaction differ. Net farm …

Women And Homelessness: Evidence Of Need To Look Beyond Shelters To Long Term Social Service Assistance And Permanent Housing, Elizabeth Huttman, Sonjia Redmond
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Based on two surveys of staff in 25 homeless shelters in the San Francisco Bay area, this study focuses on services to homeless women and their children. Both the advantages and disadvantages of shelter living are discussed, as well as obstacles to moving homeless women and their children into permanent housing. The survey finds that there is a need for rapid movement out of the shelters and a concomitant need for long term social services.

Absence Of A Family Safety Net For Homeless Families, Kay Young Mcchesney
Absence Of A Family Safety Net For Homeless Families, Kay Young Mcchesney
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Analysis of data from interviews of 80 mothers in five shelters for homeless families suggests that the availability of housing support from kin may be a selection mechanism determining which families become homeless. The availability of kin housing support is seen as a function of four factors: family structure, proximity, control of adequate housing resources, and estrangement. Policy implications are discussed
Five Year Cohort Study Of Homeless Families: A Joint Policy Research Venture, John J. Stretch, Larry W. Kreuger
Five Year Cohort Study Of Homeless Families: A Joint Policy Research Venture, John J. Stretch, Larry W. Kreuger
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Over the past ten years there have been significant investments in families uprooted by homelessness, but no data which clearly delineated what types of families had been helped, and how long help may have sustained them. Reported are preliminary data on 875 families who resided in a 60 day family shelter from 1983 through 1987. Field interviews in 1989 with 201 of those families provide data on residential history, employment, familial and demographic changes, service needs and additional homeless episodes. Policy questions focus on current residential stability and community reintegration.

Entrepreneurial Activities Of Homeless Men, Steven Balkin
Entrepreneurial Activities Of Homeless Men, Steven Balkin
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Encouraging and assisting homeless people to become self-employed provides a way for some of them to increase their incomes, and may help close the gap between the cost of housing and labor market earnings. A survey of operators of homeless shelters was conducted to determine the types of work activities that adult homeless men participate in. Self-employment was found to be a common activity for a substantial proportion of adult homeless men; and a preferred mode of employment for many. Advantages and disadvantages of such an approach are discussed. Several program models are described which can be used to enhance …

Study On Street Children In Four Selected Towns In Ethiopia, Kevin Lalor, Angela Veale, Azeb Adefrisew, Unicef, University College Cork
Reports
The child is the most precious asset and the focal point of development for any country. However, unless children are brought up in a stimulating and conducive environment getting the best possible care and protection, their physical, mental, emotional and social development is susceptible to permanent damage. Ethiopia, being one of the least developed countries of the world due to interrelated and complex socio-economic factors including man-made and natural calamities, a large portion of our population - especially children - are victimized by social evils like famine, disease, poverty, mass displacement, lack of education and family instability. Owing to the …

The Construction Of The Right To Development: The United Nations, Human Rights, And Economic Development, Nader Izzat Said
Dissertations
The origins of human rights are of interest to social scientists. This study focuses on the construction process of the right to development as related to the UN. The emphasis is on the claims-making processes surrounding the creation of the right to development. To understand these processes, a theoretical framework has been developed. This framework combines interactionism, collective-behavior approaches, a dialectical theory of law-creation, and a capitalist world-economy theory. It is expected that this theoretical framework will explain the specific, organizational, and structural processes that led to the creation of the right to development.
Data for this study came from …
Acting On Their Own Behalf: Affiliation And Political Mobilization Among Homeless People, Marcia B. Cohen, David Wagner
Acting On Their Own Behalf: Affiliation And Political Mobilization Among Homeless People, Marcia B. Cohen, David Wagner
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Homeless people have been portrayed in the literature as passive, isolated, and unable to act on their own behalf. The authors discuss the findings of an ethnographic study of homeless activists which challenge the stereotypical view of homeless people as disaffiliated and disempowered. Collective social action was found to have a long term impact on access to material resources, development of social networks, and construction of positive homeless identity.

Gender Ideology And Drinking Norms: Content Analysis Of Alcohol Advertisements In Selected Magazines, 1973 To 1988, Sherry Jo Walker
Doctoral Dissertations
This content analysis compared gender-alcohol associations presented in alcohol advertisements in Ms. and Sports Illustrated from 1973 to 1988. Analysis focused on (1) changes in gender representations during a period of transitional female roles, (2) relative frequencies of cognitive and emotion-inducing themes appearing in sex specific alcohol advertising, and (3) drinking norms presented by alcohol advertisers during a period characterized by criticism of alcohol marketing.

Clarifying And Measuring Community, Service, And Citizenship, Rutgers University
Clarifying And Measuring Community, Service, And Citizenship, Rutgers University
Service Learning, General
The working group met for the first time at Rutgers University November 22 to 24, 1992 for critical discussions of issues concerning community, service, and learning in the context of education-based service learning programs. The working group's 31 members included representatives from universities, service organizations, foundations, and community activists. Participants worked closely over the two days, meeting in three discreet sessions dedicated specifically to the theory of community and citizenship, the practice of service-based learning, and--with particular reference to service learning-- the measurement of civic outcomes.
