Maine Center on Aging Research and Evaluation
The University of Maine Center on Aging (CoA) in collaboration with members of the Eastern Maine Transportation Collaborative (EMTC) conducted a twelve month needs assessment focusing on the challenges and barriers that older adults face in accessing chronic care medical services such as diabetes care, cancer care, dialysis, cardiac rehabilitation, and physical therapy in Hancock, Washington, and Penobscot Counties. The assessment was conducted through phone interviews, surveys, and community case studies. Participants included older adult chronic care patients, escorts and family members accompanying patients to chronic care appointments, medical office schedulers, and transportation providers. Belonging, Bridges, And Bodies, Sheena Malhotra, Kimberlee Pérez
Graduate Student Scholarly and Creative Submissions
Feminists' negotiations of academic spaces are often facilitated by allies who act as bridges for us. We interviewed three pairs of women who are friends, colleagues, or partners and analyzed their stories for notions of how they were enacting bridgework for each other within the context of fluid identities, and shifting power relationships. We find that bridgework happens primarily along three axes in these relationships: bridging to community, bridging to power, and bridging to consciousness. This paper unpacks the differentials of bridgework done by differently racialized bodies as a means to understanding the conditions for belonging those bodies evoke. We …

Maine is experiencing an increasing rate of children being raised by their grandparents or other relatives. The common reasons these individuals have taken on the responsibility of surrogate parenting, when the biological parents are unwilling or unable to do so include drug and alcohol abuse, child abuse and neglect, mental health problems, illness and death, incarceration and family violence. Under the vast majority of circumstances, relatives take responsibility for these children instead of the State Child Protective Services; this saves the State money but can be very burdensome to the family. Aging And Safety: Tips And Resources, J. Crittenden, L. Ruffin, Maine Partners For Elder Protection
Maine Center on Aging Service and Consultation
The Maine Partners for Elder Protection Project provides support to older individuals in order to feel safe and independent in their lives. It provides an Elder Care Specialist to listen to concerns, provide information, and make suggestions and plans. It includes tips to be safe when shopping online, how to avoid telephone scams, how to avoid identity theft, and how to be safe at night and at home. Coming up with a safety plan is crucial, and can be accomplished through these tips and having phone numbers on hand to call in case one needs help.
