This study examined the impact of parental substance misuse on young adult development and relationships by interviewing young adults about their experience being raised by a parent who misused substances. A qualitative design based on constructivist grounded theory and informed by constructs from attachment theory was used. Participants consisted of 10 young adults, ages 18-26, who endorsed being raised by a parent who misused substances. The interview questions developed for the study were informed by a measure of adult attachment. Introduction: Chronic pain is commonly encountered in primary care. It is often treated with opioids, which can cause overdose and death. Psychological interventions are an effective alternative, yet difficulty engaging patients with opioid prescriptions has led to their underutilization. Offering these interventions in primary care settings may alleviate this barrier.

Objective: Determine whether opioid prescriptions are related to patients engaging in a brief psychological intervention for chronic pain management in primary care.

For decades, the 12-step model has been the go-to for substance use treatment. Programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous have given individuals in recovery the space to recover and reclaim their lives. However, research has shown this recovery to be directly influenced by the individual’s religion and his or her reliance on a higher power. For those who subscribe to a religion outside of Christianity, or have no religious backing at all, 12-step program can be disadvantageous.
