Public Policy And Strategies To Support Institutional And Technological Innovations In The New Water Economy: The Example Of Innovation Technology Clusters In Developing And Diffusing Water Technologies., Craig Francis Barham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A long list of water technologies has been central to human development throughout history. From the well in ancient times to desalination in the contemporary period, water technologies are needed to produce, distribute and treat water to support human life, industry, agriculture, and environmental health. As human development puts intense pressure on the planet's limited fresh water supplies, society is turning to increasingly innovative water technologies to close the supply-demand gap. The water economy represents a significant share of total economic output it its own right, while at the same time water directly or indirectly underpins all other economic activity. …
A Renaissance Of The Visual Arts In Worship For Churches Of Christ, Heather Heflin Hodges
A Renaissance Of The Visual Arts In Worship For Churches Of Christ, Heather Heflin Hodges
Doctor of Ministry Theses
This Doctor of Ministry thesis presents the results of a project in which a group of four artists from across the United States met via video conference to create liturgical art activities that can be integrated into the Sunday morning worship for Churches of Christ. The problem identified at the beginning of the project was a lack of integration of the visual arts in worship in Churches of Christ. I understood this lack to be due in part to an iconoclastic heritage in Protestantism as well as a focus on rational intellectualism and desire for simplicity in worship as a …

Leadership And Innovation Within A Complex Adaptive System: Public Libraries, Darin S. Freeburg
Faculty Publications
Viewing public libraries as Complex Adaptive Systems, the current study analyzed leadership within these systems in terms of complexity and innovation. This included a leader’s capacity for ambiguity and emergence, features of leadership in different contexts, and perceptions of success and innovation. From a list of current public library directors and managers, 15 participants completed a 30-minute phone interview that followed a semi-structured guide. By analyzing the intersection of complexity of approach with complexity of context, eight leadership approaches were uncovered through coding. Results suggest that most participants engaged with most of the leadership approaches at some point. In addition, …

Innovation As A Driving Force For Development Economy Of The Country, S. Zakirova
Innovation As A Driving Force For Development Economy Of The Country, S. Zakirova
International Relations: Politics, Economics, Law
For the economy of Uzbekistan at the present stage, it is important to form a socio-economic system in which innovation should play a dominant role as a factor that ensures higher competitive advantages. To conduct a comparative assessment of the innovation activity of different countries, the well-known global innovation index (GII) is used. According to the index, the country's innovativeness is estimated as the ratio of expenditures on innovation in a wide context (institutions, human capital, science, infrastructure, development of the domestic market, state of business) and achieved practical results (development of technology and knowledge economy, creative results ), which …

History In The Making: Outreach And Collaboration Between Special Collections And Makerspaces, Erin Passehl-Stoddart, Ashlyn Velte, Kristin J. Henrich, Annie M. Gaines Mlis
Collaborative Librarianship
Makerspaces present unique possibilities for creative partnerships within libraries, including the opportunity for interdisciplinary use of emerging technologies with archival objects and primary sources. One example of this type of interdisciplinary collaboration is the fabrication of cultural heritage replicas via 3D scanning and printing of historical university objects in academic libraries. Two departments in the University of Idaho Library, Special Collections and Archives (SPEC) and the Making, Innovating, and Learning Laboratory (MILL), partnered on such a project as a way to broaden maker competencies across library departments, leverage interdisciplinary connections between emerging technologies and historic archives, and create innovative outreach …
The Rationale For Taxpayer Support For Primary Industry Research And Innovation In Western Australia, Ross Kingwell
The Rationale For Taxpayer Support For Primary Industry Research And Innovation In Western Australia, Ross Kingwell
Research Reports
During the 2000s a common view in government circles was that governments were over-investing in primary industry research and innovation. In agreement with this view, the Western Australian (WA) government lessened its support for primary industry research and innovation over the last decade. The impacts of this reduced support are seen clearly in the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD). In 2008–09 its agricultural staff count was 1518, yet by the end of 2017–18 this will be under 800, with remaining staff working mostly in regulation, biosecurity and corporate services rather than research. So great has been the …
Innovation, Firm Size Distribution, And Gains From Trade, Yi-Fan Chen, Wen-Tai Hsu, Shin-Kun Peng
Innovation, Firm Size Distribution, And Gains From Trade, Yi-Fan Chen, Wen-Tai Hsu, Shin-Kun Peng
Research Collection School Of Economics
We study a trade model with monopolistic competition a la Melitz (2003) that is standard except that firm heterogeneity is endogenously determined by firms innovating to enhance their productivities. We show that the equilibrium productivity and firm-size distributions exhibit power-law tails under rather general conditions on demand and technology. In particular, the emergence of the power laws is essentially independent of the underlying primitive heterogeneity among firms. We investigate the model’s welfare implications, and conduct a quantitative analysis of welfare gains from trade. We find that, conditional on the same trade elasticity and values of the common parameters, our model …

Specifically, the study focuses on curricula within the state of California to derive potential opportunities for the relevant practitioners in the Bay Area. In addition, the study further extends curriculum review to other well-recognized SCM programs around the U.S. By exploring current relevant course offerings from different academic institutions for higher education (i.e., universities), this research aims to deliver general ideas useful to knowledge practitioners in fields concerning SCM. Finally, the research illustrates a …
A Dual-Process Team Mood Framework Of Team Creativity, Sean Teck Hao Lee
A Dual-Process Team Mood Framework Of Team Creativity, Sean Teck Hao Lee
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
While it has been recognized that mood can exert a substantive influence on an individual’s level of creativity, much of the creative needs of organizations today are being fulfilled by brainstorming teams rather than individual employees. As such, researchers have begun to examine the effects of mood on creativity in the context of teams. Existing findings, unfortunately, have not been consistent, such that positive mood has been shown to be beneficial towards team creativity at times (e.g., Grawitch, Munz, Elliott, & Mathis, 2003), while at other times being harmful towards team creativity (e.g., Tsai, Chi, Grandey, & Fung, 2012). Similarly, …

The French Metropole: How It Gained Legal Status As A Metropolis, Janice Griffith
The French Metropole: How It Gained Legal Status As A Metropolis, Janice Griffith
Journal of Comparative Urban Law and Policy
France’s long history of centralized governance has generated debates as to what powers should remain with the State and what powers should devolve to sub-national governments. To ameliorate the fragmentation resulting from the small size of France’s 36,000 plus municipalities, called communes, the State authorized the creation of general-purpose, inter-communal public institutions to perform municipal functions on behalf of the communes on a greater economy of scale. The article examines the trajectory that led to the creation in 2010 of the métropole, or metropolis, the most recent of these inter-communal bodies that is designed to undertake public functions in large …

Lean Six Sigma's Impact On Firm Innovation Performance, Austin Michael Strong
Lean Six Sigma's Impact On Firm Innovation Performance, Austin Michael Strong
Theses and Dissertations
Following Toyota's dramatic rise to prominence within the automotive industry in the late 1980's, firms around the globe have widely sought to adopt Lean Six Sigma (LSS) as a means of reducing costs, improving quality, and gaining an overall competitive advantage. While the operational benefits of LSS are largely undisputed, there are criticisms of the movement with regards to its effect on firm innovation capability. Prior academic studies investigating the relationship between LSS and innovation are largely conceptual in nature, rely heavily on qualitative data, and display a high degree of variability in results. The objective of this work was …

Facilitating Creative Problem Solving When Big News Interrupts, Philip E. Marks
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
The objective of this Project was to design and deliver a 2.5 day workshop for Human Resources leaders in a large corporation. The workshop objective was to give these leaders tools and a creative experience as they develop an action plan to “Ignite Innovation” in their organization, thereby fulfilling the Human Resource team’s vision. Unfortunately, during the workshop, the organization announced that it was being sold by the present ownership and purchased by a larger organization. This big news disrupted the workshop and its participants, and the objective became, how to facilitate change when the future had just become uncertain …

Inter-Departmental Collaboration On Electronic Theses And Dissertations: Redesigning Workflows To Enhance Access, Rachel Paul, Cedar C. Middleton
Digital Initiatives Symposium
In an effort to eliminate redundancies in thesis and dissertation cataloging at the University of Arkansas, a working group was devised to create a semi-automated workflow. This new, multi-departmental workflow eliminates redundancies, allowing us to provide better access to the intellectual endeavors of the scholars on our campus. This paper describes the experience of the collaboration within multiple library departments and departments across campus; acknowledges the importance of library and campus collaboration with examples of success and advice from the literature; and emphasizes clear and consistent communication, meeting user needs, and streamlined and innovative workflows.

Creating A Reproducible Metadata Transformation Pipeline Using Technology Best Practices, Cara Key, Mike Waugh
Digital Initiatives Symposium
Over the course of two years, a team of librarians and programmers from LSU Libraries migrated the 186 collections of the Louisiana Digital Library from OCLC's CONTENTdm platform over to the open-source Islandora platform.
Early in the process, the team understood the value of creating a reproducible metadata transformation pipeline, because there were so many unknowns at the beginning of the process along with the certainty that mistakes would be made. This presentation will describe how the team used innovative and collaborative tools, such as Trello, Ansible, Vagrant, VirtualBox, git and GitHub to accomplish the task.

Democratizing Innovation: How Consumer Electronics Is Revolutionizing Rocketscience, Abhith Pallegar
International Review of Business and Economics
The traditional flow of cutting-edge technologies observed over the last 100 years was from government supported defense space to its broader application in the civilian domain. We have seen technology flow into consumer products years after its introduction in defense applications. Most common examples of this movement were the invention and incubation of the Internet and Global Positioning System in prestigious national labs, which later trickled down to benefit millions. But there seems to be a shift in the tide of innovation where consumer market has been influential in developing a range of technologies which have flown the other way …

Online Educational Outcomes Could Exceed Those Of The Traditional Classroom, Elliot King
The Emerging Learning Design Journal
An axiom of online education is that teachers should not mechanically translate existing courses into an online format. If so, how should new or ongoing courses be reshaped for the online environment and why? The answers come both from the opportunities offered by the structure of online education and from a body of research from cognitive psychology and cognitive science that provides insight into the way people actually learn. Freed from the time and space constraints inherent in face-to-face higher education settings as well as the deeply ingrained expectations of both teachers and students, online education provides a more flexible …
