Scholarly Commons continued to grow in 2014-2015, not only in content added and downloads, but in maturity of the process. At the beginning of the second year, many of the early challenges resolved as teams that oversee the administration and new development began to understand the system and each other’s strengths. Members of the university community also developed a better understanding of Scholarly Commons and its value to many aspects of the research and academic mission. In particular, various departments turned to Scholarly Commons to host conferences and events. Also, members of the Oversight Team met with representatives of Sponsored …

Engineering A New Home: Creating A Repository Collection For Faculty And Building A Larger Digital Presence For The School Of Engineering, Lauren Todd, Emily Symonds Stenberg
University Libraries Presentations
This talk is an expanded version of one given at the 2015 MOBIUS conference. Washington University librarians Emily Stenberg and Lauren Todd explain how they created and manage a collection in the university’s repository Open Scholarship for the Computer Science and Engineering department. This presentation will highlight how they developed a step-by-step workflow, addressed customization requests from the department, what really happened once that plan was implemented, and how they handle Bepress troubleshooting and faculty concerns. The presenters will also discuss how this project has helped them offer Open Scholarship as a service to other engineering faculty.

Creating an Institutional Repository from scratch creates a multitude of both opportunities and pitfalls in establishment of workflow, content creation, outreach and marketing policies, and stakeholder support. Nova Southeastern University’s Digital Commons based repository, NSUWorks, completed its first year in February 2015. During this session, the triumphs and tribulations of the first year will be discussed, along with future plans in order to give attendees a glimpse into one particular IR experience. Archival collection digitization, outreach/marketing, journal/book publishing, reporting tools, and collection development will also be covered. Spotify Playlist.

Letting The Data Lead The Way: Georgia Southern's Journey With Alternative Metrics, Ashley D. Lowery
Library Faculty Presentations
The landscape around alternative metrics has been evolving rapidly. Going from a twitter hashtag in 2011 to a key component in research evaluation at many institutions, metrics that move beyond citation counts and journal impact factor are here to stay. Metrics can now be harvested and applied to research around usage, captures, mentions, and social media, in addition to citations, giving a much more comprehensive and holistic view of impact. These new metrics are also much more timely than citation metrics and can keep pace with new formats much faster than the entrenched, legacy practices. However, as institutions begin to …

This is a case study about the implementation of an institutional repository (IR) at Marshall University. Libraries have always collected information from a worldwide marketplace and have disseminated these resources locally. The IR has created a new function for the library by making it practical to acquire locally developed resources and to disseminate them freely worldwide. This has altered the traditional role of librarians and suggests a broader set of implications for the future usefulness and relevancy of the IR as doors open to new partnerships that will strengthen the university and the library’s place within it.

In 2014 Nova Southeastern University celebrated its 50th. In conjunction with the anniversary, the NSU Libraries determined a need to preserve the past, present and future of the university by creating a campus wide repository for all scholarship, creative work, and historical materials produced by the university. NSUWorks is a part of the NSU Libraries’ contribution to the university’s ongoing growth and success as an internationally recognized research institution. NSUWorks was launched at the Dean’s Meeting on November 2014, and reached its one year anniversary at the end of February 2015. The NSUWorks Annual Report covers the period of February …

The SMU librarians performed a skit in celebration of Open Access Week. The skit entitled "The Life of Pi: A Paper Born in SMU" tells the story of an original manuscript’s journey to get accepted in a journal, finally getting published in an open access journal and depositing an appropriate version in the institutional repository. The Library also wanted the research data to be deposited. Done with Singapore flavour using some Singlish, the skit was performed on 28 October at a function for faculty in the Li Ka Shing Library at the Singapore Management University. Cast: Rajendra Munoo, Tamera Hanken, …

Cross-Border Implementation Of Institutional Repository: A Case Of Aga Khan University, Mary Ngure, Ashraf Sharif, Peter Gatiti
Libraries
Institutions globally have increasingly embraced Institutional Repositories (IRs) to collect, showcase, archive, and preserve their intellectual and scholarly output. Many benefits are gained from implementation of the platform including: the institution’s visibility, status and reputation is increased; authors get wider public access and visibility thus more citations for their work; long-term preservation of research; and the library benefits from its new role in information creation and distribution thus the opportunity to re-assert its importance in the face of declining user dependence on libraries for simple access to information (Sharif 2013).
Despite the high uptake of IRs to manage institutions’ digital …

The Gothic Archive is the flagship digital humanities project for the Marquette University library. The project was birthed from a simple digital collection, and through the partnership of faculty and librarians, was transformed into something more. The core tenets of digital collection creation were adhered to in order to create a solid foundation upon which to build the Archive. The expertise of both groups and communication were key in the evolution of the collection, and in discovering and highlighting the relationships between the objects. This case study reviews the steps Marquette took in creating the collection and taking it to …

Enhancing Discoverability: How To Describe Digitalcommons Content For Harvest Into Cultural Heritage Institutions, Andrew Wesolek, Joshua Morgan
Enhancing Discoverability: How To Describe Digitalcommons Content For Harvest Into Cultural Heritage Institutions, Andrew Wesolek, Joshua Morgan
Presentations
Both institutional repositories and cultural heritage institutions have broadly defined collection development policies. As such, many collections could appropriately reside in both. However, at many institutions digital libraries that support cultural heritage collections are often supported by CONTENTdm, while institutional repository initiatives are supported by another platform--in Clemson's case, DigitalCommons. Librarians at Clemson University identified several key collections that fit both the scope of its institutional repository and digital library. In order to leverage the "google-ability" of the institutional repository with the discoverability that comes with inclusion in the DPLA, we embarked on a process to describe our collection and …
