A Simplified Revision Of The Keston Music Preference Test, Barbara Jean Snodgrass

Psychology ETDs

The purpose of this study was to revise and simplify a new and involved test of musical preference. The Keston Music Preference Test in its original form consisted of sixteen phonograph record discs, or thirty-two sides in all. It took approximately three hours to administer, and the grading procedure was extremely complex and time consuming. However, in spite of these difficulties, the test has demonstrated its usefulness in measuring musical discrimination, or musical sophistication among high school students and college students. It seemed highly desirable, therefore, to reduce the length of the test and to simplify the grading system of …

An Experimental Analysis Of The Reinforcement Process, Raymond Robert Shrader Aug 1953

An Experimental Analysis Of The Reinforcement Process, Raymond Robert Shrader

Masters Theses

The reinforcement process as it applies to learning theory has been the subject of an increasing amount of attention in recent years. This attention is reflected in the controversial question of whether or not reinforcement is a necessary condition for learning and it is reflected even more so, for those who adopt an affirmative position on the question, in their attempt to demonstrate the relationship between reinforcement and learning. Whatever the bias of the theorist there has been an overall concern with making more explicit the reinforcement process. With regard to this latter problem we find several points of view …

The following study is a partial analysis of the phonology of the dialect spoken at Naze, the largest city on the island of Amami O'Shima in the northern Ryukyo Islands. Although it is generally known that Ryukyuan is related to Japanese, no descriptive study, employing modern linguistic methods, has been published for any of the Ryukyuan dialects. The time available for the fieldwork underlying this analysis limited the problem to phonology, and even here, the results are subject to the disadvantages of data which may be incomplete. However, since so little is known of Ryukyuan, even a partial analysis may …

Cost And Efficiency Of Producing Canning Peas In Cache And Box Elder Counties, Utah, 1951, Lynn Herman Davis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The production of canning peas has an important place in the economy of Utah, particularly in the counties along the western slopes of the Wasatch Mountains. The enterprise is one which adds intensity to Utah's small farms. This intensification is accomplished with little additional equipment or labor other than that owned or supplied by the farm operator and his family. The crop is seeded in early spring and harvested in early summer leaving the ground available for summer fallowing or planting to a short season crop such as grain pasture. Peas are a satisfactory nurse crop for small-seeded legumes such …

Cost Of Producing Broilers In Utah, 1951-1952, Thomas I. Gunn

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Broiler production in the United States and in Utah has become increasingly important in the last few years. It has developed from virtual nonexistence in 1930 to the point where it now produces more than half of the total chicken meat production. Growth has been especially rapid since 1934, when separate statistics on broiler production became available. In 1951, production was about 6 times that of 1940 and for the first time the number of broilers raised exceeded the number of chickens raised from farm production.

Man is a social animal. Without participating in social activities and enjoying the social privileges, man cannot live but physically. He has something in common with the rest of the human race and a particular interest in his own community which imposes on and shares with him the same cultural pattern. The different cultures have a universal cultural pattern common to mankind, (32, p. 129), but in the same time there are many traits which prohibit the different groups from understanding each other, not because of languages, but because of the existence of the cultural barriers. To cross the barriers …

Reflection Of Hopi Culture In Hopi Folk Tales, Constance B. Sears Jan 1953

Reflection Of Hopi Culture In Hopi Folk Tales, Constance B. Sears

Anthropology ETDs

The present study has been undertaken in order to investigate those aspects of culture which are reflected in the folk tales--and those which are not--and the extent of that reflection. Furthermore, because the large body of Hopi literature provides a practical advantage for folk tale analysis, the specific problem selected was that of assessing the reflection of Hopi culture in their folk tales. It was decided to focus the study on the social life of the Hopi, rather than to deal with the entire culture, because of the necessity of narrowing the problem to a scope of a thesis, and …
