Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Whether providing services or resources, every library is faced with questions of selecting the right resource for the right reason. You need a website, a process for updating content, a way to manage operations, and a system for responding to constant change. Increasingly, new service opportunities are found in cloud and virtual platforms. This presentation looks at opportunities in selecting the right tools for the right job. The presentation will explore some unique aspects of law libraries and legal subject content many libraries rely on, including the strategic value of content from law libraries in metropolitan areas.

Fee-Based Services As Source Of Funding For Public University Libraries In Ghana - A Survey, Michael Ahenkorah-Marfo, Raymond Osei-Boadu
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
ABSTRACT
Academic libraries have a crucial role to play in the achievement of the goals of their parent institutions. However, public universities in Ghana have generally not been financing their libraries to the quantum that has been recommended by the Universities Rationalization Committee in Ghana. Public university libraries have experienced dwindling budgetary allocations which hover around 3% of the total universities’ annual budget. Responses received from a survey on sale of some aspect of their services as a possible source of additional income indicated that it exists only in one of the university libraries. Respondents posited that it is a …

The Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) has emerged in the past few years as the poster child of the online higher education revolution. Lauded and derided, MOOCs (depending on who you ask) represent the democratization of education on a global scale, an overblown trend, or the beginning of the end of the traditional academic institution. MOOCs have gained so much critical traction because they have succeeded in unmooring educational exchanges and setting them adrift in the sea of the internet. Although the MOOC is a new and evolving platform, it has already upended facets of education in which librarians are …
The Education System And Librarianship In Pakistan: An Overview, Rubina Bhatti
The Education System And Librarianship In Pakistan: An Overview, Rubina Bhatti
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
Education is a key element in progress and change. This paper discusses the education practices and librarianship development in Pakistan in historical, present and future perspectives. Pakistan has been struggling to develop an all-encompassing identity since the founding of the state in 1947. The literature shows that education in Pakistan at all levels is characterised by low quality since independence; the contributing factors are limitation of financial resources, poor appreciation of the education priorities; inadequate delivery system and population pressure have never allowed a full expression of the desired change. The other causes include poorly equipped educational institutions, lack …
Library Publishing And Undergraduate Education: Strategies For Collaboration, Stephanie Davis-Kahl, Michael Seeborg, Isaac Gilman
Library Publishing And Undergraduate Education: Strategies For Collaboration, Stephanie Davis-Kahl, Michael Seeborg, Isaac Gilman
Scholarly Publications
Library-based publishing services are increasingly common as libraries seek to provide alternatives for the dissemination of scholarly and creative work. Connecting these services to the educational mission of libraries' institutions is vital for publishing programs' success and sustainability. This panel of librarians and faculty from liberal arts colleges will discuss the educative and advocacy roles that their library publishing programs have developed, and suggest best practices for librarians wishing to implement their own publishing programs. Isaac Gilman's slides are available via CommonKnowledge.

The Academic Library: Cowpath Or Path To The Future?, Verlene J. Herrington
Publications and Research
This paper relates the traditional academic library to the expression, “don’t pave the cowpath”. Originating in the IT world, this expression means to not integrate technology into an established practice without assessing whether the process is still effective or still needed. Even though sustaining technologies have simplified information retrieval and library tasks, library organizational structure and processes remain pretty much unchanged. This article discusses the cowpath that academic libraries have followed for decades and the challenges disruptive technologies pose to the traditional model. It looks at how one academic library rejected tradition, got off the cowpath and created a different …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study presents census data of provision and support for students with special needs (usually known as disabled students) in libraries of special education professional degree awarding institutions (DAIs) and rehabilitation centers (RCs) acting in Lahore. Questionnaire was used as research instrument in this quantitative study. Provisions and supports in libraries of DAIs and RCs were illustrated on graphs covering overall students with disabilities and different disability areas – physical impairments, hearing impairments, and visual impairments. Non-parametric tests were used for data analysis. Analysis of collected data confirmed that there was no association or relationship between provisions and supports for …

Social Media Use By Ontario University Libraries: Challenges And Ethical Considerations, Gary Collins, Anabel Quan-Haase
FIMS Publications
The application of social media by academic libraries is re-shaping traditional ideas of library services. The use of social media in Ontario’s university libraries demonstrates the divergent modes by which information technologies are utilized, as well as the challenges facing libraries in both adopting and using these tools.
