I am an associate professor at Parkland College in Champaign IL USA. After teaching graphic design full-time for 10 years, I'm very pleased to be taking a semester off for sabbatical leave in spring 2011. My sabbatical application was approved on December 22, 2009 and we immediately starting making plans. With an extented period of time available for recuperation and renewal, my partner and I wanted to do some serious traveling. This discussion of my fieldwork, memory, and experience begins with a nod to Handler and Gable’s essay (this volume) in which they ask what anthropology can contribute to the study of social memory. I take Gable and Handler’s insights about the false dichotomy between memory and history (since, they argue, all history and memory are perspectival) and consider ways in which fieldwork photographs demonstrate the same point. I suggest that my photographs became the repositories for individual interpretations of a host of broader issues related to the nation-state and its agenda. Homo erectus was the first human lineage to disperse widely throughout the Old World, the only hominin in Asia through much of the Pleistocene, and was likely ancestral to H. sapiens. The demise of this taxon remains obscure because of uncertainties regarding the geological age of its youngest populations. In 1996, some of us co-published electron spin resonance (ESR) and uranium series (U-series) results indicating an age as young as 35-50 ka for the late H. erectus sites of Ngandong and Sambungmacan and the faunal site of Jigar (Indonesia). Although the shift of paradigm in Post Authoritarian Indonesia has rearticulated the discourse of nationhood, the general notion that it is based on an imagined community remains an important consideration. Decades of ideological hegemony has been performed by the state through various socio-cultural constructions, embedding in the minds of its citizens the notion of a nation as a territorial space that undermines ethnicity in favor of the wholeness of 'Indonesia'. A key aspect of facilitating a transformation to a more just and equitable society should be the facilitation of decent work, through the adoption of labour standards. Yet the majority of workers in the global South are engaged in vulnerable, informal work that offers very little (if any) welfare protection While there are many possible ways to improve the conditions of work in the informal sector, this paper focuses on organizing workers as an agent for change.
