Emotional Labor, Worker Solidarity, And Safety Concerns Among Police And Nurses, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann, Emily Shinsky

Midwest Social Sciences Journal

To understand the connections among emotional labor, solidarity, and safety, this study interviewed 19 police officers and 20 nurses. Data analysis with words as the unit of analysis engaged both deductive and inductive processes. This qualitative study demonstrates that, despite numerous differences, both nursing and police have a professional focus on safety. However, while nurses’ safety concerns are first for their patients, police offers’ first concern of safety must be for themselves and their co-workers. Additionally, nurses and police differ in why they perform emotional labor. Nurses engaged in emotional labor in order for their charges to feel closer to …

Integrated Model Of Cybercrime Dynamics: A Comprehensive Framework For Understanding Offending And Victimization In The Digital Realm, Troy Smith Phd

International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime

This article introduces the Integrated Model of Cybercrime Dynamics (IMCD), a novel theoretical framework for examining the complex interplay between individual characteristics, online behavior, environmental factors, and outcomes related to cybercrime offending and victimization. The model incorporates key concepts from existing theories, empirical evidence, and interdisciplinary perspectives to provide a comprehensive framework. In contrast to traditional criminological theories, the proposed model integrates concepts from multiple disciplines to offer a holistic framework that captures the complexity of cybercrime and specifically caters for the uniqueness of cyberspace. The article will provide a detailed overview of the conceptual model, its theoretical underpinnings drawing …

Indiana Time Law And Its Detrimental Effects, John F. Gaski Sep 2024

Indiana Time Law And Its Detrimental Effects, John F. Gaski

The Geographical Bulletin

The most enduring and contentious public policy issue in Indiana history may be the seemingly prosaic matter of “what time is it?” This analysis focuses on the implications of the State of Indiana’s recent change to daylight-saving time in conjunction with near-statewide Eastern time . I argue that the economic and commercial basis for the new temporal regimen is erroneous, and that its educational and humane implications are substantial . Finally, I outline a proposal for resolution of these issues . Although the concentration here is the Indiana situation, lessons are generalizable to other states, counties, and regions facing similar …

The Transportation Disadvantaged And The Right To The City In Syracuse, New York, Kafui Ablode Attoh

The Geographical Bulletin

Drawing on the idea of the right to the city, this paper focuses on the challenges facing the transportation disadvantaged in Syracuse, N .Y . This paper will begin by focusing on two programs aimed at transporting welfare recipients to work: the Rides for Work and Wheels for Work programs . This paper will then examine transit activism in Syracuse as it emerged, first in debates over wheelchair lifts on public buses in the 1980s and second as it has emerged in more contemporary organizing efforts aimed at promoting transit awareness . Through these four case studies, this paper argues …

Educational Neglect In Utah: How The State Allows Children To Fall Through The Cracks, Celeste D. Barker Sep 2024

Educational Neglect In Utah: How The State Allows Children To Fall Through The Cracks, Celeste D. Barker

Transforming Communities

Chronic absenteeism due to educational neglect is a prevalent social need in the state of Utah. Thousands of children in Utah are falling through the cracks of the system that is designed for their success and it is imperative that Utah’s State Legislature examines this dilemma more closely. It is recommended that the legislature examine real cases of educational neglect and realize how current decision making and policy framework is impacting the future success of Utah’s children. Modifications include extending the scope of intervention to secondary school-aged children, creating standardized attendance infraction letters for every school district in Utah, reevaluating …

Woman Abuse In Sports-Related Contexts: Social Scientific Knowledge, Walter Dekeseredy Sep 2024

Woman Abuse In Sports-Related Contexts: Social Scientific Knowledge, Walter Dekeseredy

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

There was a vibrant surge in the 1980s and 1990s of social scientific work on men’s abuse of women in sports-related contexts, but this wave receded over the past two decades and eventually disappeared. Recently, however, an international cadre of scholars has revisited the off- and online victimization of women in these settings. The main objective of this paper is to examine what the extant scholarly literature tells and does not tell us about this social problem.

Ritual Child Homicides In Ghana And Kenya: A Criminological Analysis, Emmanuel Sarpong Owusu Sep 2024

Ritual Child Homicides In Ghana And Kenya: A Criminological Analysis, Emmanuel Sarpong Owusu

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

Child homicide is a frequent occurrence in many African communities, and juju beliefs trigger a sizable proportion of this crime. Yet a systematic and critical analysis of juju’s impact on pedicides is lacking in the literature. The sparse extant studies on juju-driven homicide or ritual murder mainly offer historical perspectives rather than criminological analysis of the phenomenon. The present study explores the magnitude, characteristics, and motivations, as well as the socio-cultural and economic contexts of ritual child homicide or juju-driven pedicide (i.e., the killing of children for ritual or occult purposes) in Ghana and Kenya. This aim is achieved by …

Prosecutorial Data Transparency And Data Justice, Caitlin Glass, Kat M. Albrecht, Perry Moriearty Sep 2024

Prosecutorial Data Transparency And Data Justice, Caitlin Glass, Kat M. Albrecht, Perry Moriearty

Northwestern University Law Review

The U.S. criminal legal system is notoriously racialized. Though Black and Latinx people make up less than 30% of U.S. residents, they constitute more than 50% of the nearly two million people currently in U.S. prisons and jails. For decades, research has indicated that one group of decision-makers has had an outsized influence on these numbers: prosecutors. From whom to charge to what sentences to recommend, no actor plays a greater role in determining who goes to prison in this country. Highly subjective and lacking in formal guidance and accountability, prosecutorial decisions are especially vulnerable to racial bias. They are …

Northwestern University Law Review

Two Latin phrases describing litigants—pro se (for oneself) and in forma pauperis (IFP, as a poor person)—prompt this inquiry into the relationship between self-representation and requests for filing fee waivers. We sketch the governing legal principles for people seeking relief in the federal courts, the sources of income of the federal judiciary, the differing regimes to which Congress has subjected incarcerated and nonincarcerated people filing civil lawsuits, and analyses enabled by SCALES, a newly available database that coded 2016 and 2017 federal court docket sheets. This Essay’s account of what can be learned and of the data gaps demonstrates the …

Felony Disenfranchisement And Voter Turnout: Randomized Trials In Iowa And Washington, Alexander Billy, J.J. Naddeo, Neel U. Sukhatme

Northwestern University Law Review

Prior to the 2022 midterm elections, we conducted large-scale randomized controlled trials in Iowa and Washington aimed at increasing voter turnout among newly enfranchised individuals with past felony convictions. Alongside national and grassroots partners, we designed and implemented experiments to ascertain the effectiveness of alternative outreach mechanisms, including targeted mailers and digital ads. We did not detect statistically significant or economically meaningful effects on voter registration or turnout; most observed effects were precise nulls. The absence of measured impact is likely attributed to low digital engagement with our online ads as well as extensive voter outreach already conducted by our …

Relationship Of Flood Peaks To 24-Hour Rainfall In The Eastern Texas Hill Country, South-Central Texas, Richard A. Earl, Jeanett Bosarge, Heather Wooten, Sarita Hedgepeth, Joel Sherrouse

The Geographical Bulletin

The eastern Texas Hill Country is noted for its extreme storm rainfall amounts and the resulting flood discharges. The resulting flash f loods contribute to Texas leading the U.S. in automobile-related, flood fatalities. These f loods produce considerable groundwater recharge to the Edwards Aquifer. A better knowledge of relations between precipitation and peak flood discharges can improve f lood hazard warning and provide estimates of groundwater recharge from ungauged ephemeral streams. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between 24-hour precipitation amounts and peak discharge for four ephemeral streams, with drainage areas between 0.3 to 18.8 mi.2 …

Cyber Crime Against Women's Personal Data On Online Platforms And The Role Of Pdp Laws, Ambar Alimatur Rosyidah, Farah Fajriyah, Rahayu Rahayu

Jurnal Komunikasi Indonesia

The presence of online platforms such as financial technology lending platforms is like a double-edged knife for women. These platforms pave the way for restrictions on women accessing loans. However, the use of fintech poses risks to women. They become victims of cybercrime with the existence of desk collectors who collect online loans and the third party who use the women's data. This study aims to examine the cybercrime implications of using fintech experienced by women related to fintech lending and then explore the role, data protection, and scope of the PDP Law as a solution. This study uses Qualitative …

Voices Of Partnerships Within The Critical Service-Learning Framework, Kiesha Warren-Gordon, Ken Hudson, Frank Scott Aug 2024

Voices Of Partnerships Within The Critical Service-Learning Framework, Kiesha Warren-Gordon, Ken Hudson, Frank Scott

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

Over the course of the past three decades, service learning has become a major component in higher education. Heretofore, however, there has been limited published research that focuses on the community partner or that assesses the role of the community partner within the community-servicelearning (CSL) model. This paper fills that gap by focusing on the community partner relationship as delineated by Mitchell (2008), the community partner’s position in CSL, and the authentic relationships between the community partner, class, and instructor. Specifically, we address the following question: How do community partners articulate their voices within the CSL framework? This paper argues …

Child Sex Trafficking And Professional School Counselor Preparedness In Texas, Devon E. Romero, Claudia G. Interiano-Shiverdecker, Katherine E. Mcvay, Brenda Jones

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Professional school counselors in Texas responded to a questionnaire about training received and their needs concerning preparedness to identify and work with youth exposed to child sex trafficking (CST). The study utilized a convergent parallel mixed methods design. Quantitative results indicated many participants did not find that their graduate degree program prepared them to work with CST and less than half felt their school and/or district provided adequate training opportunities. In addition, thematic analysis revealed two themes characterizing Texas school counselors’ needs to identify and work with CST: (a) concerning preparedness: “so much going on” and (b) “specific training”: a …
