In his Über das niederländische Adverbialpronomen 'er' Bech argues that the subject expletive of Dutch is inserted when the NP subject has an indefinite article. Bech also claims that the subjective expletive is a local subject and not a logical subject.

This thesis proposes that the use of the subject expletive cannot be based upon a traditional structuralist concept. The author rejects some of Bech's claims and argues for a semantic distinction between definiteness and non-definiteness as a basis for expletive insertion. Of the language learning materials which already exist on Indonesian, the language of nearly one hundred million people in Malaysia and the Republic of Indonesia, none is particularly suited for fieldworkers--that is, whose whose interest in the language is more practical than academic, whose intent is to live and work in Indonesia for an extended period of time. Fieldworkers need to develop the communicational skills of listening and speaking over those of reading and writing. They also need to learn the speech level which is most appropriate for foreigners. The purpose of this thesis is to explain the differences among syntactic combinations of verbs in Lakota Sioux (Teton Dakota). The thesis at first examines the literature on combinations of verbs in Lakota. Thereafter criteria for distinguishing morphological combinations of verbs (compounds) and syntactic combinations of verbs are set forth. The criteria are: potential for replacement, regularity of meaning, and potential for variation in inflection. The emphasis of the thesis is on the classification of syntactic combinations of verbs which it proposes.

The purpose of this study was to identify the functional problems and informational needs of LDS chaplains and bring together official Church statements in relation to them. A list of these needs was obtained by use of interviews and questionnaires from chaplains who have served since the Korean War. Information was also gathered from Military Relations Department files of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

English and Japanese are very different from each other in tems of their structures. And consequently no one would call the present translation of the Japanese Book of Mormon a low rank-bound translation.

However, a substantial amount of grammatical categories of English such as number, redundant subject for Japanese, pronominal expression, and the passive voice which is not used so often in Japanese as in English, are introduced in the translation. Orem, Utah, is a rapidly growing city that is changing from rural to urban land uses. A present inventory of land is important in determining the land use characteristics of the city, the degree of development, and future use of land. A field survey was made of the city and the resultant land use information was computerized for data analysis.

The purpose of this study was to determine the kind and degree of differences that existed in the socioeconomic status and access to financial resources of elderly members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and to determine if differences existed between Church Service and private pay elderly hospital patients in economic status, type of housing, housing costs, marital status, sex, number and degree of access to children, savings and other assets.

This study focused on the influence of population knowledge and population concern on acceptable family sizes and expected family size. Analysis of the responses of 212 students in Introductory Sociology classes to a questionnaire survey revealed that the greater the student's population knowledge, the greater the degree of concern over population growth. Furthermore, the study revealed a stronger relationship between general knowledge of population processes and population concern than between specific knowledge of population sizes and growth rates and population concern.

Seventy-five directors of the Institutes of Religion of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in California, responded to a questionnaire regarding their public relations' practices. Institute directors with formal training in public relations utilized more practices, an average of 30.4, than directors without formal training who used an average of 26.9 practices. Institute directors in different locations (divisions) did not differ in the average number of practices used. Seventeen percent of the directors had structured public relations' programs. Since its organization, the Church has kept records of its members and their Church activity. The foremost means of gathering this data has been printed report forms. This thesis traces the history of formal reports used by the Church and emphasizes information on membership and vital data as well as activity in Priesthood and auxiliary organizations. Financial reports of organizations and individual persons, as well as personalized confidential reports and minutes of meetings were not used. The thesis analyzes the type of information called for rather than the statistical figures themselves.

The data for this study was gathered through a random stratified geographic sample from all residential areas of Provo. The study was based on 84 completed questionnaires which were gathered on the basis of a broad socio-economic cross section. All of the questions were open-ended, and included the drawing of mental maps of residents' images of Provo. The data was analyzed on the basis of respondents' areas of residence, age, length of residence in Provo and religious background.
